The mech fights look more CG focused than any other gundam series before

my guess is sunrise is testing the waters with the cg, to see if people would like this for future projects. Sunrise is doing this with Code Geass as well, i know many people here didn't like the cg but eh.
we may even see some CG in the new Gundam Age "side story"series

This is looking more and more engaging. I'm very excited to see what will come of this series. Alongside Devil Survivor 2 and Date A Live, this will be one of the series I follow starting in April.

It just sounds like Gundam without calling it Gundam, just like Dragonar. I wish they'd let Takahashi write and direct a TV show again. With him you can actually get shows about veteran mecha pilots, but they're still empathetic and interesting. "Schoolbody enters mecha, miraculous pilot" is so outplayed it's as perfunctory and robotic as the giants they operate.
You already know the paces the show is going to move through: boy finds robot, wipes the floor with weaker enemies, they somehow counter with their own brand "mysterious robot", and arms race ensues for 26 or 50 episodes until they reach some cliched bullshit "pisu ando rabu" ending involving a deus ex machina that stops nuclear warheads/big object collision. Even if I'm wrong on some of those, the basic formula has remained remarkably steady for 30 years.

Well, Gundam doesn't actually have a school focus like... ever. The second arc of age had a few episodes and Gundam wing had one or two and that's about it for school in over 30 years of Gundam.
I'm somewhat disappointed when I see a futuristic looking planet and mechs in space, and then the PV shows a bunch of schoolkids. It's not about the pilots being old or young, but about their role and what is actually on the screen.
And Takahashi? Well, at least if we're talking about Votoms, it has so insane plot twist and plot armor in place that it puts most other mecha shows to shame.
