I like Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer best... and my favourite non-series based standalone film is either Kiki's Delivery Service or Project A-ko.

I like Spirited Away the best, but Kiki's Delivery Service is a close second.

I am a huge fan of any Miyazaki movie, heck any Studio Ghibli movie. They all rate high on my personal favorites list. My personal favorite though is Mononoke Hime.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is my choice.
Some of the best animation Madhouse has ever done, wonderful directing and voice acting, and dripping with style. One of the few cases where a sequel outshines the original.

Nausicaa !!!
It's a realistic and touching fantasty story that features mature themes and characters. It's animation is done the traditional way (by hand) and is top notch for the medium.
Good for watching by yourself, with family, and probably girlfriend. It's a good piece of proof that anime isn't just for kids. The action is sparse but Nausicca's story and visuals more than make up for it.
The creatures of the world are creative and fairly original. The setting and world have character: The Valley of the Wind looks/feels homey and comfy; the jungle has the aura of a dark and deadly forest, and the blight that covers the lost towns doesn't look static, too fluffy, or harmless. The world isn't marred by excessive detail and nor does it feel ordinary or beautiful.
Nausicaa is the best, Period.
