Small typo: "earened"
Wonder when I'll be able to go watch... Theaters will probably be full for a while unless you go during the day. |

Pretty big numbers. I wonder if One Piece Z will be able to do as well when it comes out in a month.

Wow, nearly 3 million USD more than Umizaru despite having half the screens. There really isn't any otaku franchise that can match Evangelion.

Eva does good for couple of weeks then drop off fast. It's not about one week, it's about the total. It will probably not earn 50millions like OP: Strong World.

Going by this it seems that 2.0 made 40 million USD from just 120 screens. Now that 3.0 is on 220 screens I could easily see it passing 50 million USD. |

they need to pick up new people then. You can't have the same people watch it, it doesn't matter it has more screens. we will see. IF it doesn't break 40m by week 5, it won't break 50m. Normally, the first 5 weeks are like 90% of your earning. Same for US movies too. Last edited by Spotlesseden on Mon Nov 19, 2012 1:29 am; edited 1 time in total |

But it obviously does matter. 2.0 had an opening weekend of a bit more than 5 million USD. 3.0 more than doubled that (almost tripled) at 13 million USD. Your statements aren't lining up with facts. The more theaters that show it, the more people will have a chance to see it.

More theaters means more people have a chance to see it quick and closer to their home. Like 40-50% of Japan population live in kanto and kansai region. it's different than US. I didn't said less people will going to see this movie. I don't know if this 13m are the same fans or new fans. I just said they need to pick up more fans. And it needs to break 40m after 5 weeks for your 50m goal. They need like 13, 9, 8, 7, 4 Millions.. I like said we will know in few more weeks. |

Around the same numbers I assume. But these films based on franchise with huge fan-bases tend to be rather front-loaded compared to other movies. They have huge opening numbers but the box-office run usually doesn't live up to the expectations set by those numbers. These are numbers only the biggest Hollywood or Ghibli blockbusters manage to reach and those movies generally don't gross 4 or 5 billion yen but about twice that amount, if not more. |

Of course it's going to surpass Strong World. It's shown in 224 theaters...Now, how many screens OP film Z will have?

I suspect this will get a lot of repeat viewers from the hard core fans, unlike 1.0 and 2.0(to a lesser extent).
There's so much to absorb from some scenes the obsessed will want to see it twice. |

After the screenings in Japan it will get screenings in other countries (China, Korea, North America, Germany and other) plus there will be the DVD/Blu rays in all the countries [some people like myself will buy both the Japanese and ENG blu ray] and there is also other merchandise and junk that's evangelion themed that will sell.
Soooooo they're doing good in terms of revenue |

I think there are a few details to keep in mind. First is the question of the audience for the movie. Ko Ransom wrote a great review on ANN for the K-ON! movie explaining how to reach as wide of an audience as it did. It required a delicate balancing act of keeping true to the elements of the show that drove otaku to see it while also making it appealing to audiences who never saw the series and don't really care about things like moe. The film wound up earning $23,000,000.
Evangelion 1.0 grossed $18,000,000, which came as a big surprise even to Anno. Otaku based anime like K-ON! and Evangelion don't hit those numbers without interest from general audiences. Another important thing to note is that before One Piece: Strong World, the highest grossing movie in the series only managed $14,000,000. What made Strong World so different was that the mangaka wrote the story himself and it had more significance to the overall storyline than popular series based anime usually do. The same is also true for the forthcoming Z movie. This is where the split comes though. In its second week, Strong World dropped 58% from its first week's gross. Evangelion 2.0 only dropped 27% its second week. You can interpret that however you like, but usually when a movie drops only about 30% its second week is a sign of strong word of mouth. Also, even though Strong World added more substance to the ongoing story than those types of movies often do, that's relatively minor compared to the dramatic change 2.0 represented in the Evangelion storyline. One other thing to keep in mind, an advertisement for the third Evangelion movie touted, "It's not anime. It's Evangelion." Anno seems to be taking a page out of Miyazaki's playbook. The Ghibli films draw attention away from any otaku pandering to appeal to a larger audience. This may also be why they attached the God Warrior short to the movie, so they could show not only the inspiration from Nausicaa but tokusatsu movies as a non-anime influence. All of this is meant to widen the appeal of Evangelion to the largest possible audience. The countless promotional tie-ins this year and the ingenious marketing campaign also go along with that. (Wasn't it just a few months ago that we were getting live action posters of street corners and rainbow piano trailers?) Ultimately though, the success of the third movie comes down to one thing: story. You can slip away from otaku culture, tout other influences, distance yourself from the herd and plan a brilliant marketing strategy, but in order to get that word of mouth, you need an exciting and dramatically moving storyline. 2.0 accomplished that. Over the course of a year and a half, Anno wrote 16 drafts and 45 revisions to the second film's screenplay, diverging one step after the next from the source material, and the box office gave its resounding answer. Now it's been more than three years since that movie, and I cannot begin to imagine how many rewrites Anno did. I do believe though that the success of Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, at the end of the day lies with the power of its story. Everything else, is just posturing. Here's some numbers for you: One Piece: Strong World 5th week: $44,000,000 (would gross $53,000,000); K-ON! 5th week: $17,000,000 (would gross $23,000,000); Umizaru 4 5th week: $67,000,000 (would gross $91,000,000); Evangelion 2.0 5th week: $28,000,000 (would gross $40,000,000). |

Hopefully One Piece is starting to loose some steam, so I do think Eva 3 will definitely do better than it.
