I'm still waiting for the as-yet undiscovered 'master of hentai' to come around and give the genre a new purpose. If you read AoD, CB is almost always dissing whatever hentai title managed to slither in, and at first I thought he must be a real hard ass with his reviews. Then I went ahead and picked some up. Most of it really sucked (and these were his recommended titles) and now I'm forced to dump it all on the highest bidder just to get it out of my sight. Conventional porn has actually gotten better since the crappy junk that used to come out in the 1970's and 1980's. Why the hell is hentai still so damn awful? With piss-poor plots and bad scripts, lousy animation and questionable character designs, modern hentai is still crap IMO. I'm sure it's probably better than it once was, but damn, I thought they could have done more with it by now.

If you haven't already seen it, try Wet Summer Days. It's one of the few hentai's with what I think is a good story.

Not to mention that it has really good production values from Studio A.P.P.P., some of the best consensual sex scenes, and the end of each episode being pretty tragic (I nearly cried like a sap at the end of each episode  ).

what Hentai needs to lift it free from its rather pathetic premise is someone who is willing to take a risk.
ditch tentacles, rape, paedophilia and the like. ditch infact the general hentai=porn concept. insted they need to set down to create a proper romantic story with the characters developing genine feelings that lead to sexual actions. we need people and couples we like to get it on. I'd be infinately more turned on and willing to buy a hentai with(for example) Tenchi getting down with Ryoko or Ayeka simply because the characters are people not just random sex toys. so first make a romance story with hentai scenes. that is how hentai should evolve, become consensual loving relationships with characters we like and feel for, if you must have tentacles and bondage then let the characters be aliens or develop fetishes but please give us a romance! when someone is willing to take the chance and create a series with developing characters and porn over a longer period then I think that hentai can ifnally become fresh and exciting. |

There are hentai out there that are like that. Maybe you never came across it, but check out Can Can Bunny Extra. It's a parody of Ahh My goddess with some nice romance stories that might warm your heart. As for why Hentai has crappy and recycle animation, static dialog, crappy writing, cheap sound and etc, it's all about production cost. Like regular japanese porn, there isn't a lot of money put in for production on things like animation, experience actor, good plot writer etc. You're not going to expect hollywood calibur hentai anytime soon. |

I don't watch a lot of Hentai. Largely because 1) a lot of it is really bad, and 2) I'm just not interested.
Now then, while most hentai is really bad, face it, most porn is really bad. It's not like pornographic anime is worse than live-action porn. Now then, there is some *really* good pornographic anime out there. From what I've seen, the good stuff comes from two genres, romantic stories, and horror. I can't really name the good romantic ones, but I'm sure a lot of people here can. On the horror side, I strongly recommend Urotsukidoji and Bible Black. The problem with both these series, Bible Black especially, is of course the rape aspect. Aside from that, they're very well crafted stories, in fact, the biggest problem with these two stories might be that they are porn. They might have made great non-porn series. -t |

I don't know if Bible Black would have made a great non-porn series. It would have been an average at best for me and pretty overrated by a lot of people. I don't watch many hentai either (only a handful), and I tend to stay away from them because they cantain too many disturbing things: Rape, Tenticle, female with giant bananas. |

Read this and you'll see you are really talking about Ero, not true Hentai. I like Ero, maybe things like the Pia Carrot OVA's, but I like real Hentai too so bring on the tentacle-raped children

CB uses too many words to discribe the type of entertainment that really doesn't deserve much.
Watching hentai depends on taste. And I can honestly say that watch as much hentai as I watch normal anime; the later being like 2-to-3 titles. Most companies and titles seemed to be stuck in a rut, though: The girls can't defend herself, she gets raped, she enjoys it, end of story. But every once in a while, you'd find a jem or two in a market that's also overly saturated. Now, I agree with hentai4me about the need to separate some works into certain pigeon-holes. The tentacles, the toiletries, the overt and illegal love for children, the grosser stuff that has the counter-argument of "someone out there who's going to enjoy it." My personal grudge is with the "...and then I woke up" fantasy-style adult anime. Secondly, a good set-up as also needed. Give people a reason why two people are screwing each other silly. Finally; the dreaded "English Dubbing" monster. We have so-called "fans" who complained against such usage in adult anime so much; it sounds like they're ashamed of the very language they used to speak to people with each day. They act like they should be typing in Japanese as oppose to English. There's no doubt that it's bad; and it feels like 4-5 people are voicing for a show that has like 10-15 main characters. But instead of the demand to do better, they opt out for the "cold turkey approach" and not have adult anime dubbed in English at all.

They need doujinshi anime! Animated hentai based on established anime series.
Frankly, if I'm looking for porn, I don't really want to have to sit through hours of dialog before I get to the action. I don't mind if hentai associates it with a series I'm already watching though (as many doujin manga do). And not all hentai is bad. Sure, they rarely have THAT much of a plot, but come on, it's porn, it's not going to have a huge plot to it. I found the animation, character designs, and overall presentation in Viper GTS to be of about the same quality as many non-hentai series, for example. Just stay away from the stuff that looks like crap, and you'll generally be fine. Still, on the other hand, there have been a number of successful non-hentai anime series (such as Comic Party, Shuffle, and Yume de Aitera) which were originally fully sexual hentai games, but had all the sex and nudity removed in the tv versions. |

I went ahead and picked up Wet Summer Days as suggested. TRSI currently has it listed as shipping in 8-10 days. I guess it's back-ordered since it's part of their sale right now. I think it came out to around $18 or so after the discount code. Any other suggestions for hentai that approaches the quality of modern anime? (I'm not big on sci-fi hentai).

Where's the fun in that? The best part of hentai is that they can make a credible space opera hentai for the same budget as one about normal folks hanging around a school or whatever. If you just go for the normal drama stuff you might as well stick to real porn.

Fine, then go ahead and recommend some sci-fi hentai/ero/ecchi. I'm not afraid of sci-fi, it's just not my first pick. I've never had sex with an alien robot on a spaceship from some far off planetary system, so maybe I just don't know what I'm missing. BTW, I recently watched the first Koihime DVD and it seemed pretty good. Everything was clean and consensual and when I laughed I was actually laughing at the jokes and not the premise itself. I recommend it to anyone (including couples) who can enjoy modern day hentai/ero/ecchi with a little bit of fantasy thrown in for good measure. Hopefully the second DVD in the series will keep to the same standards. |
