Woah, There re-releasing My Neighbor Totoro??
It should of been a 2 disk set in the first place....

Old version was put out by Fox, it was Fullscreen, but the dub was EXCELENT. Disney now has the rights to it and re-dubbed it (unfortunently), and are releasing it in widescreen as part of their Ghibli license. |

The dub's fine, as long as you wear earmuffs. Otherwise, Dakota and Elle will remind you of why you hate shopping at K-Mart.

This is excellent news. I rarely buy anime for keeps, but Ghibli films are the exception. I can watch those over and over and over again.
I've seen a mature anime from a bootleg Ghibli set that someone bought off ebay. When I say mature I mean that it covered adult themes and views, but not any fan service or sexual themes. I hope they eventually bring some of those over, even though I imagine that they would be very poor sellers. Is anybody else really dying for a full Ghibli set in authorized form? I would drop some serious cash for the entire library in one shot. |

The Mature one would have been Only Yesterday, which has been shelved at the moment. Whereas Ghibli's usual fare (well, the stuff Disney owns) is somewhat childish and has a broader audience, Only Yesterday has adult themes and focuses, such as nostalgia and periods and whatever else which make it hard to market/find an audience readily. It might be released subbed only. A full boxset will be a hard thing, because as far as I know Ghibli doesn't allow it except in IML's case, where they released on 11 of the films in one boxset (Howl's, Whispers (I think) and Grave of the Fireflies were not included). Grave can't be included because the distribution rights currently belong to someone else. |

And the Fox version was dub-only. At least Disney is making it both dub and sub. |

That sounds like it. I coudn't finish it for some reason. The player I was watching it on just kept messing up and stopped playing the DVD after a while. I can certainly live with subbed-only since that's all the HK version had anyway.
It's owned by CPM and I already have the special edition so I'm covered there. |

I doubt CPM would mind allowing Grave of the Fireflies to be added to a box like they did with the second UY film. It's probably up to Disney, though, since I'm not sure how the latter company would feel releasing a WW2 film which is sympathetic to Japanese civilians. They don't even mention it on the back of Pom Poko.

have you actually had the chance to hear it? disney's ghibli movie dubs have always struck me as (gasp! shock! shudder!) pretty well-made.
plus, having children play children is usually a good move; i don't think they could be worse than the fake-o english voice of setsuko in the otherwise great dub of "grave of the fireflies". |

Yeah, I was at the Totoro L.A. screening. It'll probably be Ghibli's biggest U.S. hit on home video.

I hopes Disney does a good job in the dub for Whisper of the Heart. It's one of my favorite movies, though, I'm curious how Disney is going to change the parody of "Country Roads."

My friend has a japanese-release Ghibli boxset and it does have Whisper of the Heart in it. Although, it doesn't have Howl as he has had the set for at least 3-4 years. Are we talking about a different boxset? Was there a new one released more recently that includes Howl??? On another note, I too am a bit skeptical about the new Totoro dub. I'm generally very open-minded to hearing new dubs, but I have a soft spot for the original one by Fox. Hmmm...we'll have to wait and see. Also, does anyone know if Disney's dub will keep the Totoro opening and closing themes/songs? (If so, would they use the original japanese versions or the ones re-recorded in english for fox's dub?) |

what i'm curious about is that they are realeasing howl's so late... i just assuming they're releasing in those three packs again.. (but it's strange because Howl's came out a long time ago)

They're probably delaying the dvd release just in case Howl's Moving Castle takes home an Oscar. Because if it does, they'll probably give it another short theatrical run, like they did with Spirited Away. They're holding off on the Dvd sale because, if people already have the film on dvd, they won't bother going to the theaters. But if they went to the theater and enjoyed it, then once the movie comes out, they'll probably buy it. If they wait for the release, they get two purchases instead of just one - assuming that Howl actually wins, which it...*shrugs* might.
