Monster (TV)

Source: Manga (completed @ 18 volumes, by Naoki Urasawa)

Demographic: Seinen

Animation Studio: Madhouse

Genres: drama, horror, mystery, psychological, slice of life, thriller

Themes: amnesia, assassins, atonement, conspiracy, crime, detective, Europe, historical, medicine, mercenaries, moral dilemma, nazis, police, redemption, revenge, serial killer, tragedy, twins

Plot Summary: Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese neurosurgeon living in Düsseldorf, Germany, had it all: incredible skill, a rich, beautiful fiancee, and a promising career. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he encounters a moral dilemma and chooses to save the life of an unknown young boy, instead of the city's mayor. As a result, he lost his support from the director, the engagement with his fiancee, and his prestigious title as chief neurosurgeon.

Shortly after, the director and doctors that replaced him are mysteriously murdered, catapulting him back to the top, and making him the prime suspect. Several years later, Dr. Tenma is reunited with the boy he saved, only to discover that the, now, young man has become a serial killer. In a long, arduous, and conspiracy-filled journey of pursuit, Tenma must make, yet another, difficult moral choice: whether or not to end the young man's life.

I've read the manga and watched up to the most recent episode. This is quite possibly the best anime ever made. Simply amazing.

Monster is incredible. Haven't read the manga, but i look forward to reading that whenever Viz decides to release it in English.

My thoughts...

Episode 52 made me drop my pencil too...

Eva Heinamann rules!

If i had the time, I would take all the pics from that picture book, and make a replica prop.

Sorry to dig up a dead post, but I just had to comment. I just finished ep32 last night spoiler[Where Tenma is in Berlin training w/the Sniper rifle, and Lunge is back on the case]
All I can say is WOW! This is one of the best shows I've ever seen. It's so different from any anime I've ever watched - I can't get enough.

My question was about the ending. Where are those pictures from? They seem to change every few episodes or so - do they mean anything?

And in case you don't feel like waiting:

spoiler[ They are scenes from a Czech picture book that Johan grew up reading called "A Monster Without a Name."]

Once they explain the signifcance, it will make much more sense. It was actually a pretty cool course of events, in my opinion, and carries over to a lot of other enjoyable plot twists Anime hyper.

Haven't seen an episode, Haven't read the manga, Haven't read the story, Don't know what the hell this is about at all

But I will buy the DVD when it gets licensed *hooray for me*

... it has MADHOUSE at the helm of production, so I'm willing to take a risk Cool

You might like this series. It's one of those crime/mystery dramas and is SO well written. I've seen up to episode 52 and I've yet to view an episode that would even come close to being considered filler.

I actually don't consider the animation by Madhouse to be that big of a factor either. The actual art is considerably more important, in my opinion, and does wonders for conveying the right emotions at just the right moments.

If you want, the first manga will be released in the U.S sometime in October. I don't know if anyone will license the anime, though I hope Geneon gets it. But if dark, psychological stories with a LOT of plot twists are your thing, I'd whole-heartedly recommend you look into this title.

I'm not gonna get the manga since I might be tied down to both... if I wanted to be bound to something, it'd be the anime

I still don't know what the hell this series is about, but I'm really willing to take a risk this blind *opinions seem to be really positive anyway*

... okay, so maybe I'll try the first manga, then if I like it, I'll continue with the TV series *even if it might be different*

Honestly this is the best series I have ever seen hands down. 50+ eps and yet no fillers what so ever, all the minor character really help develop the characters and contribute to understanding the main characters. I would HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of anime. The only thing I will say about this show as it is not action driven, so if you need to watch people getting blow up/chop up etc etc each eps watch speed grapher or trinity blood. But if you are looking for a very intellgent show that will leave you in awe from the number of twists and turns.
By the way many of you may not know this series was license by New Line Cienema for a movie. No details yet but the anime has not been licensed and the manga should be out shortly, or sometime in the near future.

I think this series would make a great movie! But then again, The Fugitive is one of my favorites, so maybe I'm a bit biased...

With the movie it is still unknown if it will be like the anime or if as someone who previously posted on these forum. "The rights to the main plot of the story, where as a doctor makes the what he believes is the right choice but in the long run it will cost him everything."

I doubt that the movie will be like the anime, the anime is way way way too long and it's not even finished. Secondly if they did decide to make a straight adaptation of the anime I would want to it to be over mulitiple movies (3-4) so that it could faithfully do justice to the show that is a masterpiece. Otherwise I am afraid that it will be a clone of the fugitive, good movie none the less but still I really don't want to see this series come to that.

The anime is nearly exactly the same as the manga, so it just comes down to which medium you would prefer.
