I've noticed that sometimes anime are submitted multiple times in the submission queue, but where the later submission has a better version of the title or the earlier submission has an incorrect type of release (e.g. TV/OVA/movie/special etc.), while the latter submission corrects that. For example, there is ひだまりスケッチ×☆☆☆ (special) and Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆ (special) both currently in the queue. Would it be best to support the submission with the Japanese title and mark the other as a duplicate submission since the one with the Japanese title is the earlier one, or would it be best to support the submission with the English/Romaji title since it is the one with the title that should be used?

Also, I've noticed that sometimes anime is submitted that I think should be added to the encylopedia, but there are multiple submissions that disagree on some details and I'm not sure which is right. For example, there are four submissions for Hoshi ni Negai wo, three total for the two episodes as separate entries and one which would have a single entry covering both episodes (1, 2, 3, 4). In addition to disagreeing on whether it should be given one entry or two, one of the submissions also disagrees with the others on whether it is a movie or an ONA. If I think the anime should be added but have no idea whether it should get one or two entries or whether it is a movie or ONA, which entries should I support? Is it acceptable to support multiple entries that contradict each other (e.g. I was considering supporting submissions 1, 2, and 3 above, with a comment in each case saying that I'm not sure if the anime should get one entry or separate entries for each episode)? Or should I support none of them if I'm not certain whether the anime should get one entry or two, even though I think it should be added to the encyclopedia in some form?

You endorse the earliest submission that doesn't have any actual errors, e.g. spelling errors or being the wrong type (TV/OVA etc). Just make sure as much information as possible is included with the original. If there is more (correct) information included with the second submission than the first then include it in your endorsement.

Quote:
1. the list may contain more than one alternate title or spelling for this submission; select the earliest (first one in the list) as the correct one.
2. if the duplicate submissions have different types (TV/OAV/...), select the correct type rather than the earliest submission

For "Hoshi ni Negai o" before endorsing or opposing you should determine if it is actually a movie or an ONA (i.e. whether it débuted in theatres or online).
As to whether the two subtitles should share an entry.. hard to say without knowing more.

Ok, thanks for the information. I'm sure I supported or opposed a couple things incorrectly in the past, but I will make sure to follow those guidelines from now on.

For Hoshi ni Negai o, basically the only source I've seen for how it was released is this ANN news story. That seems to suggest that even though streaming, Blu-ray, and theatrical releases were announced for Hoshi ni Negai o: Fantastic Cat at about the same time, the streaming release happened first. So I guess it should be labeled as an ONA. I'm also going to assume that since it sounds like Hoshi ni Negai o: Fantastic Cat was released by itself, it should get a separate entry from Hoshi ni Negai o: Cold Body + Warm Heart. Though I'm also not quite sure if Hoshi ni Negai o: Cold Body + Warm Heart got any sort of commercial release (at least ANN doesn't seem to have any coverage of it, and I haven't found another source saying it got a theatrical release or anything other than being released on the Internet). They are dōjin anime, and my understanding is that non-commercial dōjin anime aren't usually added to the encyclopedia (according to the FAQ). Since Hoshi ni Negai o: Fantastic Cat got a theatrical release, I assume it should be added, but if Hoshi ni Negai o: Cold Body + Warm Heart didn't get a commercial release, would that mean it shouldn't be added? It would seem weird though to have Hoshi ni Negai o: Fantastic Cat in the database without Hoshi ni Negai o: Cold Body + Warm Heart, since Fantastic Cat is a sequel to Cold Body + Warm Heart.

Also, one more quick question. Am I correct that the label "special" is used for anime that are initially shown at special events and festivals (in addition to being used for TV specials). That seems to be the case based on things like Letter Bee: Light and Blue Night Fantasy (special) and Toriko (special) being labeled that way, but I wanted to make sure since the instructions say it is for "a one-shot episode, usually shown on TV". I'm guessing that it includes any one-shot episode that wasn't initially released thatrically, on video/DVD/Blu-ray, or on the web (i.e. not a movie, OVA, or ONA).

Special is normally for stuff like the Love Hina Christmas Special. But when an anime doesn't really fit into any of the other categories, "Special" is often an acceptable choice since the word itself indicates an uncommon case.
