Man, I would KILL to see Eva 2.0 get a chance at the Oscars...
It's 10x more accomplishing than Summer Wars IMHO. Summer Wars felt like... spoiler[like it was "trying"(not really doing) to see if you can make a movie about modern society feel "right" as opposed to... say, be like Sky Crawlers and how that movie made today's world seem like it's only pitiful]. Regardless, in the same way the that the Ghost in the Shell was a revolution in anime, that's how I think Eva 2.0 is. But... that's just from a guy who REALLY enjoyed the ride! Good list though... |

You do know that Eva 2.0 was a remake right? How is a remake a revolution in anime especially when we got quite a few remakes recently?

Come on, let's get at least one more submission. I'd hate to see Summer Wars be left out because there weren't enough slots.

....actually the second movie starts drastically diverging from the original plotline. Off the rails. |

I'm pretty sure the award's going to go to Toy Story 3 with How to Train Your Dragon at a close second. No complaints there, but if there has to be a third I'm guessing it might go to Idiots and Angels. I personally think that Summer Wars more than deserves a nomination, but you know how the Academy is about any movie featuring more than one non-white character.

Barring clemency, it's too late to submit more films; the deadline for the paperwork was November 1, and the deadline for the film prints was November 12 (last Friday). |

I agree with you on your prediction. I saw Toy Story 3 at the IMAX Dome in Tampa and I wanted to cry. spoiler[ Of course, my inner anime geek nearly gushed at the animated Totoro plushie. I'm surprised it didn't make a noise during the film but still a sweet nod to Academy Award Winner Miyazaki. btw: Is there a US company that make the Totoro Plushies or will I have to import one? I have seen two Japanese different companies offer them but don't know which one is the one with the current license.] I want to at least see Summer Wars get a nod. |

I know that but its still a remake, so Evangelion influences (Rei, plugsuits, and religious imagery) are stuff that is now constantly seen, and nothing I have heard about really seems to be showing the revolution Otaking is talking about. The only thing I can think about (the eyepatch) has been seen before in Ikkitousen and Strike Witches. |

Everyone knows Toy Story is going to get it. Even if it doesn't deserve it.
I mean look at last year. Up got it. Everyone knew it would - but I still stand by my original opinion of Secret of Kells or some of the others should have gotten it. But in my opinion I liked Summer Wars. A very happy kinda flick that I could sit my mother down in front and watch.
That makes me laugh sad but true ... |

How is that a "revolution"? I know that the movie remakes and tv series are different, but they're not so different that the movies are going to cause a revolution, it's on par with the difference between the two Fullmetal Alchemist continuities. As for Summer Wars it's chances to be nominated went out the window when their was only three movies to be nominated. I think they remember that Miyazaki didn't show up when Spirited Away won, and I can't imagine the voters forgetting that slight. |

As an avid film and anime fan, and as somebody who has seen the Academy snub more than one fantastic film in this category (*cough* Paprika *cough*) in favor of more kid-friendly fare (*cough* Ratatouille *cough*), I'm going to unfortunately agree with the poster above about Toy Story 3 getting the win. Which is sad, because if (when?) that does happen, it won't be a win based on the quality of the film itself, but instead an "aw, it's made by Pixar, and it's a conclusion to their most beloved franchise!" kind of win. Toy Story 3 was a great film, but an excellent award-
winner that stuck with you for days and weeks afterwards? Definitely not. Not saying Summer Wars should necessarily win, but I would rather it win than TS3 winning because of it's pedigree and not it's own quality as a stand-alone film. As for the other animated features, I regret to say I haven't seen ALL of them, but I definitely think, judging by the tone of about 3/4 of them, that what the studios think should nominated is either too childish or too frivolous. If only the genuinely excellent animated films were nominated, and Toy Story 3 was somehow taken out of the equation, the playing field for this year's Best Animated Feature could actually be level, but alas, this year we may have to let Pixar have another one simply because they're Pixar. |
