Lots of cheese and bad production value, but for some reason I enjoyed it somewhat. I really liked the Nene and Priss characters. |
Casshern (live-action movie) |
Bad |
I just have to say something about Casshern: Holy crap does it suck. Half the time you don't know what the fuck is going on, and the plot is thin at best. Stuff happens for no apparent reason. There was nothing memorable about it at all. Gorgeous cinemotography. Bleh. |

I'll start off by saying that I watched 16 episodes of this series in less than a 24 hour period. Le Chevalier D'Eon is one of the most amazing shows I have ever watched. It's mysterious story and well defined characters made me keep coming back for more. |

I find it hard to believe that this series is the series in which I can relate to the characters over every series out there. Sure I'm an anime lover and could very possibly be of "otaku" status, but I always thought to myself that these people are different from me, not worse or better, just different, despite sharing the interest in the rabid consumption of anime. Not only did I relate to them on a level of interest, but I related to them as people. It is shocking how much I can relate to them. I watched the second season of this series entering my final year of college, and I'm going through what the characters are going through right now. Seeing friends get jobs, graduating, job hunting myself. Their desires mirror that of mine almost to a T, in almost every respect, especially sexually (I relate to Sasahara strongly in this way). The ending of the series caught me at the right time. I originally sat down to watch this show for the wild and wacky comedy and nerdgasm references, but what I got in return was something amazingly real and true to life. Not bad for a bunch of nerds, right? |
Ghost in the Shell (movie) |
Masterpiece |
Writing a review for a movie that is so impeccably awesome is one of the more difficult things to do. So I'll stop before I write something competely terrible... But seriously, I don't know where to start. Masamune Shirow's Ghost In The Shell is considered one of the great pieces of graphic cyberpunk literature. I haven't many cyberpunk comics or manga, but I have read y fair share of cyberpunk literature. Ghost In The Shell is my favorite. The cyberpunk genre is so filled with crap it's almost unbearable. As with all cyberpunk, there are common themes and conventions of the genre: high tech, low life, futurism, the implications of the integration of machine and man, and an overall stretched, cynical, and alienated world, one that reflects ours almost perfectly if you look at it the right way. Ghost In The Shell fits and imroves the genre and reduces other's attempts to rubble. GitS is all about exposing the world Shirow has created to the veiwer. The characters are mere vehicles, but in GitS, they are so much more. Specifically Major Katsuragi, who is almost fully artificial (save her brain, which is organic and human), struggles with her humanity. Katsuragi's feelings reflect humanity's, as the population as a whole questions what it really means to be human. The advancements of computer technology has far reaching social, political, and biological implications, and (I agree with Shirow on this) the human species is just not ready for it. Despite our victories, established civilizations, and technological achievements, we are fragile beings with even weaker minds. This is what this movie is about. Shirow's work inspires you to think and ponder about the future.
To close up this review, I'd just like to make some comments about the aesthetics. The animation for this movie was done in 1994, though the style suggests that it is a very well polished 1980s anime, which I like very much. The colors are bland and dark; appropriate for the suggested themes. I'm glad the lighter tones of the manga didn't carry. It made the movie that much more polished and focused. Truly a great film. On a side note, if you pay careful attention to the building faces during the existentialist scenes, |

This series is great, and its main thesis of spirit and belief in acheiving the impossible is played out very well, though there were some elements of the show that put me off. 1) *spoilers* Later in the series, a good chunk of minor characters die in one extremely rushed battle. I found myself not caring one bit about any of them, save maybe one, mainly because they weren't developed as characters. It seems the writers killed them off so they wouldn't bog down later storyline. 2) The characters in the show are inexplicably given a shitload of powers and baffling technology and understand how to use these instantly. Yeah, it happens in anime all the time, but this is overkill. Perhaps it symbolicly shows limitless human potential, which ties back to the main theme. Perhaps not. Whatever. It still put me off a bit. 3) Dimensional jargon crap at the end of the series. Maybe it's a translation issue, but if it's not, I'm not sure how the writers expected an audience to know what the hell they were talking about. Anyways, great show, lovable characters, and a great art style that rivals that of fooly cooly. |

Now and Then, Here and There (TV) |
Good |
Now and Then, Here and There was a very touching and heartbreaking series, but I found it difficult to get into, not because of the poor production or animation quality (they don't help), but because the design of the show was not at all good. Nor was the writing. The story is wonderful and is worth telling. It could have been a great series. |
Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ (movie) |
Good |
A big budget helps, for the animation and music are pretty fantastic. The scriptwriting it self is weak, some aesthetics are odd, and pretty much 80% of all the characters are unmemorable. You even forget about the main "villain" by the end of the movie. The story, however, is really good, but I have heard several accusations testifying that, and this has probably ruined Naussica for me, it is a watered down version of Naussica. I think I'll reserve my judgement until I see Naussica. |

Scrapped Princess (TV) |

Scrapped Princess is, at it's heart, a very good series. It is both character and story driven. The characters are likable and the story is excellent. However, there are some glaring disappointments that cannot be overlooked. when I finished I found myself torn as to whether to give the Excellent I wanted to give it (because i enjoyed watching 15-24 so much), and the Very Good it deserved. It was only after that I listed out the series' shortcomings that decided on Very Good. Of course, isn't this always the case? Not so with with Scrapped Princess. This was the toughest anime to rate that I've seen in a very long time. So let's get to the points. The format of the show seemed jerky to me, as it didn't flow as well as I would've like from episode to episode. I also felt that the story world wasn't defined very well. I found often during the series that I wanted a map in my hand that showed where the main characters were traveling to. not only that, but cultures were only defined superficially (ie clothing, architecture). I never felt like I was being presented with a culture, with the exception of perhaps the Giat nobility. At other points in the series I felt like the main characters were in a vacuum. Now here's my biggest complaint: Sim/Cz was never resolved! What happened? |
