A.D. Police (TV) |
Decent |
Not what I wanted, but a decent story in itself. It really ought to have melded better with BGC 2040.... |
AD Police (OAV) |
Very good |
The beginning of one of my favorite universes... I really like this series. |
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (OAV) |
Very good |
The original, and still the best. Nuku Nuku sort of started the happy cat-girl stereotype you see so often in anime... and such fun music. One of Hayashibara's better roles, I think.... |
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (TV) |
Decent |
Not as good as the original, but better than DASH!... A good bit more insanity in this one... |
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku DASH! (OAV) |
So-so |
Not so good. Not only did they seriously mess with the background, they made some really unusual love interests.... not one I like. |
Angel Links (TV) |
Good |
I really liked the Outlaw Star universe, and was pretty excited when this one showed up. It didn't seem to hit all the same buttons, but it was still a rather enjoyable tale. Sad, though.... |
(The) Animatrix (OAV) |
Decent |
Some shows are good, some are bad. Overall, worth the watch. |
Appleseed (movie) |
Decent |
A hint.... read the books. I thought the film was weak and was too separate from the books... |
Arjuna (TV) |
Excellent |
|
Armitage III (OAV) |
Very good |
Another favorite. The idea of robots that can act as surrogate mothers was really new at the time, and is still pretty fresh today. Add the great art and character designs, a tech soundtrack, and you've got all the elements I like. |
Armitage III: Poly-Matrix (movie) |
Good |
Not a successful blend of the OAV series, as far as I'm concerned. They left out a lot of the stuff that emphasized Armitage's humanity.... |
Armitage: Dual-Matrix (movie) |
Very good |
Better than the first movie, probably because it was actually new material. I liked it pretty well, and was impressed how they handled the situation with a robot mother and human child.... |
Azumanga Daioh (TV) |
Excellent |
A show I absolutely love... the style of humor, the Japanese jokes, and the art style are all things that click with me. It seems you either love it or hate it, and I love it.... |
Azumanga Web Daioh (ONA) |
Good |
More of the same, but the art changed a bit, which I really took offense to. |
Banner of the Stars (TV) |
Very good |
A continuation of Crest of the Stars, but doesn't quite capture the personal feeling from the first. Still, a great ride, but I really wanted a bit more personal development. I do like the mecha design and the space battles are nothing short of breathtaking, but I left it with a small feeling of being cheated.... |
Banner of the Stars II (TV) |
Very good |
A great follow-up to one of the best sci-fi anime shows ever. If you've watched the show up to this point, you know what to expect, and the show pretty much delivers. I'd love to see more of what goes on with Jinto and Lafiel, but the series ends fairly definitively. I understand there are other novels in the series, though... |
Battle Angel (OAV) |
Very good |
Battle Angel is a great comic series, but it suffered a bit in the transition to anime. Still, a great film overall, with a good world premise and story. |
Battle Athletes (OAV) |
|
|
Battle Athletes Victory (TV) |
Decent |
Cute little show... I'd recommend renting it. |
(The) Big O (TV) |
Good |
I like mecha anime (Except for Gundam, it seems), and I really like this one. The relationship between Dorothy and Roger could use some more in depth exploration, though. And the whole memories thing.... And as a Queen fan, I love/hate the OP theme... |
Black Magic M-66 (OAV) |
Good |
One of Shirow's weaker films (well, they're all weak compared to the books), but still enjoyable. It kind of reminds me of Appleseed in a number of ways.... |
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) |
Good |
Fun... and I thought they did a pretty good job of blending Japanese and English... but I didn't really care much for the character designs. I do think it would do well in a longer series. |
Blue Gender (TV) |
So-so |
I don't much care for this one. I hate the main character, I hate the politics in the series, and I don't like the Mecha or creature designs. As far as pure sci-fi series go, it's not bad, but I don't much like it. |
(La) Blue Girl (OAV) |
Decent |
Not a clean hentai show... but still a lot of fun. It shows its age, these days, but it's always a fun ride. Sure, it does some pretty unbelievable things, but hey, it's tentacle porn... what did you expect? |
Blue Seed (TV) |
Good |
An old friend... It really hit all the right buttons for me at the time, especially when I was into monster anime. I thought the story was well done, but the character designs aren't as sharp as I'd like. |
Blue Seed Beyond (OAV) |
Good |
One of my early animes, so I see it a bit rosily. I still like to watch it... opening theme ain't so hot, though... |
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) |
Very good |
A great show that really was one of the first to successfully meld CG into cel anime, at least as far as I'm concerned. Plus, the entire genetic thing came into play when I was considering a career in genetics, and hit all the right buttons with that as well. A favorite. |
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) |
So-so |
I just... didn't get this one. It's too confusing for me. I just couldn't keep track of what was happening. Plus, I keep falling asleep in it.... |
Bubblegum Crash (OAV) |
Good |
Not as strong as Crisis, but I liked how they kept the character and mecha design very similar to the original. Add that almost all the original seiyuu came back, and I am a happy guy. I also loved the music, so hey.... the dumbing down of boomers was a minus, though.... |
Bubblegum Crisis (OAV) |
Excellent |
One of my absolute favorite series, largely for the music and mecha designs. The fact that Sonoda did the character design doesn't hurt either. It probably had more to do with creating the cyberpunk genre than any other series out there. The Blade Runner ripoffs do get a bit old, though.... |
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (TV) |
Very good |
Not as strong as the original, I thought, but some very pretty character designs. It starts to suffer from poor mecha design later in the series, though... might just be budget crunch, who knows... like the first, though, has some excellent music. |
Burn Up! (OAV) |
Good |
Cop comedies with a shag-wagon. What's not to like? Much older than the W series and others, but still fun. |
Campus (OAV) |
Good |
A cute little hentai show, clean enough for couples. I really like the character design, and the lack of mosaics and *ahem* unrealistic portrayals of anatomy makes this a good film for non-tentacle fans. The end was predictable, though.... |
Cardcaptor Sakura (TV) |
Very good |
A great show, but it pales compared to the manga. All the same, though, it's a favorite of mine for the music and for the great character designs. Sure, it's girly, but it never loses it's sense of humor and some of the more adult themes it tackles. |
Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card |
Good |
Continuing the tradition of the tv series, a fun little show. If you liked the tv show, you'll like this. |
Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie |
Good |
I love this series, and the movies are pretty similar. As usual, there's some dilution from series to movie, but I thought overall that it carried things off rather nicely.... |
Castle in the Sky (movie) |
Very good |
More Miyazaki goodness... can this man make a bad film? |
Cat Soup (OAV) |
Good |
What a.... wierd.... show. Get what you can out of it, this one resulted in a lot of head shaking for me. |
Cat's Eye (TV) |
Not really good |
Blah... more sci-fi cliches wrapped up in an obviously low budget film... |
Chobits (TV) |
Good |
I'm a fan of CLAMP's work, generally, and this one is no exception. I found myself wishing I had a mobile unit as well.... It's cute, yes, and has the same questionable pairings that most CLAMP shows have, but if you like CLAMP, then you'll like this. Chii's innocence is rather refreshing.... |
Colorful (TV) |
Good |
A show about panties. That's it. When it first started, I actually felt a bit offended, but as I got into the swing of things I found myself enjoying it more and more. If you ever needed some reassurance that you aren't the lowest life form on this planet, this show will do it for you.... |
Comic Party (TV) |
Good |
Let me just say, that if I had a friend like Taishi, I would have to beat him. Repeatedly. A great show that really gets into the doujinshi scene in Japan, and still stays interesting and fun all the way through. Solid characters, good stories, what's not to like? |
Cowboy Bebop (TV) |
Excellent |
What can I say, great characters, great music, great mecha designs, and great stories. It's got it all. It succeeds with moral instructions without being preachy. |
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie |
Excellent |
More of the same. If you like Cowboy Bebop, you'll love this one. |
Crest of the Stars (TV) |
Excellent |
A great straight up sci-fi series. I found myself ensorcelled in this series from the beginning, and wound up watching the whole thing until three in the morning. I'm hoping they continue the show.... Despite the somewhat odd art style, or perhaps because of it, I really like this show. Music ain't all that, though.... |
Crying Freeman (OAV) |
So-so |
If you want to see some skin, this show's for you. Too bad a lot of it is a guy.... but there's plenty of females to go around. It takes a rather questionable idea of brainwashing a random guy to become an assassin, but the action is pretty good... the quality takes a hit about halfway in, though.... |
Demon City Shinjuku (OAV) |
So-so |
A decent little horror sort of show that isn't very scary... Yet another single guy against the bad guys show. |
Devil Hunter Yohko (OAV) |
Very good |
I'm a big fan of this series, and the quality of the show only increases from the beginning. The music is fun, the stories are fairly amusing and engaging, and even though it got an adult label in the beginning, it isn't anywhere near adult enough to deserve the label. A great little show. |
Doki Doki School Hours (TV) |
|
|
Dominion Tank Police (OAV) |
Very good |
One of Shirow's zanier works. I'm a big fan of this one, what with Buaka and the cat-girls and all. Tanks policing the streets? Can't go wrong. |
Dragon Pink (OAV) |
Decent |
A fun little hentai show. Nothing overly graphic, and some good solid humor. An old favorite. |
Endless Serenade (OAV) |
Decent |
Pretty clean, fun, mindless hentai. It has good character design, dull voice acting, and the standard hentai cliches. If you can get over that, it's fun. |
Excel Saga (TV) |
Very good |
If you like wacky, non-sensical shows, you'll love this one. I love this one... but not as much as FLCL or Azumanga Daioh... |
Fire Tripper (OAV) |
Decent |
One of Rumiko Takahashi's less well know works, but one with a better story than some of her other shows. Usually her manga is much better than the anime, but having never read the manga for this one, I can't say. |
Fist of the North Star (movie) |
Weak |
Ugh... I just don't like the Fist of the North Star stuff. Just too much for me. I don't like the characters, I don't like the story, I just don't like it. |
FLCL (OAV) |
Excellent |
I like craziness. And this show has it in spades. Like a lot of more recent shows, it has a good number of anime in-jokes, but they aren't really integral to the story like other anime. It's a good show about growing up that doesn't answer any questions, but if you've made it to the end, you don't much expect it to. |
Full Metal Panic! (TV) |
Good |
Good music, and good character design, with good mecha design. So why don't I like this one better? Probably because I thought the story was weak... and overly stereotyped in parts. |
Gasaraki (TV) |
Good |
I follow politics pretty heavily, and so does this show. Maybe that's why I stuck with it throughout the slow story... It does have some very nice character designs, though I didn't much care for the mecha designs. |
Genesis Climber Mospeada (TV) |
Decent |
I love the mecha designs in this show. The characters, okay, the music, blah, but the mecha designs really do it for me. I don't usually enjoy post-apocalypse type shows, but this one is fun enough for me. |
Ghost in the Shell (movie) |
Very good |
Another Shirow that doesn't compare to the books. Indeed, it only covers a part of the book, but it is another one that really took CG to the anime world. Good music, great character design, and great mecha design really make this one for me. |
Girl from Phantasia (OAV) |
So-so |
Old not so good show. Sort of a romantic comedy, but it struggles for it, and generally falls short. |
Girl Next Door (OAV) |
Decent |
A decent show, but I really didn't like the way certain parts of anatomy were shown. Still, the story isn't completely stupid, and the characters aren't too bad. Fun and clean for couples, I guess, but the main character is irritatingly stupid... |
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) |
Excellent |
When I need to show people that anime is much more than porn, I show them this film. If they aren't crying by the end of it, I don't need them for friends. |
Green Legend Ran (OAV) |
Decent |
A show I bought on LD a long time ago, I really liked the arid earth sort of idea. It also had some refreshingly new character design for the time, but poor mecha design. The story was good enough to get me through it, though. |
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) |
Excellent |
I can't help it, I love this show. It's crazy. It's one of the few shows where I've actually said, "Oh my god, I can't believe....." |
Gunsmith Cats (OAV) |
Very good |
I'm a huge fan of Sonoda Kenichi's works, and this is probably the one that got me started. A lot of shows don't translate well from manga to anime, but this one not just succeeds, it thrives. I wish there was more of this series.... |
.hack//SIGN (TV) |
Good |
By now most everyone has seen this. I like the premise, but I don't much care for the main character... |
Haibane Renmei (TV) |
Excellent |
Usually when Yoshitoshi ABe gets tangled up into a project, you can expect to get something unexpected. No change here. The way the characters deal with their new existence is what makes this show great. |
Hand Maid May (TV) |
Very good |
A cute little show about a computer geek who is way too normal and good looking. It's like Love Hina, but better and with robots. Great character design, good acting, and a story that never slows down keeps this one fun. Highly recommended. |
Happy Lesson (TV) |
Good |
Well, I can imagine what would have happened if five of my teachers moved in with me during high school, and it wouldn't have been pretty. But then, none of my teachers were foxes like these ones.... Sure, it's harem anime, but what's wrong with that? At least they aren't trying to get into his pants. For the most part.... |
Happy Lesson (OAV) |
Good |
Heh... if you liked the TV series, you'll love this. Fun, fun. |
Haré+Guu (TV) |
Good |
Another nutty show. It takes a while to figure out just what the hell the show is about, but it turns out to be quite enjoyable anyway. Not that we ever find out just what the deal is with guu.... |
Hellsing (TV) |
Good |
I'm not usually a fan of Vampire shows, but I found this one quite enjoyable. I was a bit bothered by the idea of a continuing war between protestant England and the Roman Catholic Church, but I still found the show enjoyable enough despite this. Great character designs, and fun music... |
His and Her Circumstances (TV) |
Excellent |
I don't give perfects. Ever. But if I did, this one would come close. Gainax makes good stuff. Make this one yours. |
Iketeru Futari (TV) |
Very good |
A fun little perverted series. I'd love to trade in my vhs tapes for a DVD set, but I don't think that will happen. It's a series of 8 minute shorts to make up a series about the trials of a stupid boy in pursuit of the perfect girl... |
Iria - Zeiram the Animation (OAV) |
Decent |
Decent little show, but it's not a genre I tend to enjoy these days. Great character design, though... thought the story was a bit weak. |
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) |
Good |
Jin-Roh was a show about fascism that I found a bit distressing, but with some great art and good music, as well as an engaging story, I have to recommend it. |
Kanon (TV 1/2002) |
Very good |
A sweet little show about pain and hope. I guess it's a girly show, but I rather enjoyed it. I do think that the ending cheapens the series a bit, though.... |
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) |
Very good |
More Miyazaki goodness. If you like Miyazaki, you'll love this. Hell, even if you don't like Miyazaki, you'll probably like this. |
Kite (OAV) |
Decent |
When I first heard about this show coming over to the states, I was surprised. I didn't see how it would make it past the censors... and it didn't. It's a show not for the faint of heart, dealing with the exploitation of children and the scum who do it. |
Koihime (OAV) |
Good |
A rather tasteful hentai show that always seems to respect reality and actually seems to... I dunno, have a human side to it. Cute, not over the top in any way... if you're looking for a 'clean' hentai show, this is it. |
Legend of Himiko (TV) |
Good |
Some beautiful character design and one of the best opening sequences I've ever seen... but the animation quality really takes a hit later in the series. Still, a fun show of good vs evil that I like to watch every so often. |
Lensman (movie) |
So-so |
A very dated show when you see it now, it wasn't all that great when I first saw it. I've only seen it dubbed, but I wouldn't have much interest in seeing it now. |
Love Hina (TV) |
Good |
A show that translates well to anime, but loses something in the translation. It's fun, but a little more hectic than I wanted. Still, great character design (but not overly true to the manga) and good music make this show a good watch. |
Love Hina Again (OAV) |
Good |
If you liked the first Love Hina series, you'll like this one. Fan Service! I admit it, I like it.... |
Love Hina Spring Special - I Wish Your Dream |
Good |
More of the same, but a bit more fanservice. |
Love Hina X'mas Special - Silent Eve |
Good |
Just like the first special, just at christmas. It advances the story a good bit faster than I'm comfortable with. Frankly, I prefer the manga.... |
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (TV) |
Very good |
|
Macross 7 (TV) |
Decent |
The weakest Macross series (except possibly for Macross II... possibly), but hey, it's got some great mecha designs in it. |
Macross 7 Encore (OAV) |
|
|
Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me! |
|
|
Macross Dynamite 7 (OAV) |
|
|
Macross Plus (OAV) |
Very good |
A continuation from the SDF Macross, I found the character designs quite nice, but the Mecha designs are where it really stands out. Add to that a great story of conflict between friends, and it a fun ride. The music really makes it great. |
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) |
Very good |
One funny-ass show.... more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at, but it does turn all serious at the end. A film about the end of friendships and childhood, but it never takes itself too seriously, which contributes to the fun.... |
Maria Watches Over Us (TV) |
So-so |
Good art, but I found it boring and couldn't get into the story much. I guess this one really is for the girls, as it's all about female relationships in school and the like. If you're into that sort of thing, you will probably like it, but I didn't.... |
Martian Successor Nadesico (TV) |
Good |
Rewatched this recently, and really enjoyed it much more than I did the first time through... I dunno, maybe my standards are slipping, but I found it a lot less irritating and more sensical. I still don't get what the deal is with some fans and Ruri Hoshino, though.... |
Masquerade (OAV) |
Decent |
Character design by the fellow who did Tenchi Muyou, so the art is fantastic. Story isn't too bad, though the ending was predictable. Still... first time I've ever seen golden spooge before, so at least it surprised me somewhere. Tame and recommended for couples. |
MeiKing (OAV) |
Good |
From pauper to king, if he can keep it together, he gets a kingdom. And any chick he wants, evidently. Another nice clean hentai show from the Vanilla Series, probably one of the better ones. Good for watching with your other.... |
Mermaid Forest (OAV) |
Decent |
I never quite got into the Mermaid series of shows.... it's a bit more horror oriented than Takahashi's typical works, but never overtly so. A decent little show. |
Mermaid's Scar (OAV) |
Decent |
Pretty much like the Mermaid Forest show... if you liked it, you'll like this. I don't remember the relation between the two... |
Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 (OAV) |
Good |
One of the first powered armor shows, it's still a fun ride. You might say it is what gave rise to the mecha designs of Full Metal Panic and Gasaraki and others of it's ilk... |
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OAV) |
So-so |
You should have noticed by now that I'm not a fan of Gundam. Well, not a fan of this one either. I'm not sure what it is about gundam that I dislike so strongly... maybe it's pretentiousness? I dunno.... |
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) |
Not really good |
One of the more painful lot. I hate Relena.... |
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) |
So-so |
Ditto. I thought Gundam Wing was one of the weaker shows to start with, and just the fact that they felt the need to continue it, well... blah. |
Moldiver (OAV) |
Good |
Moldiver is one of those early Pioneer anime that most people these days have never seen, which is a shame. It's a fun little series about super powers and how to abuse them.... |
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) |
Excellent |
Totoro is yet another Miyazaki film, but for my money, you can never have too much Miyazaki. I love his stuff, and this show is one of his best. It shows clearly how much family members love each other and how much family matters. |
Neo Ranga (TV) |
Very good |
Neoranga is a show I wasn't sure of to start, but really fell in love with. The characters are all so strongly developed and defined that you really get a feel for them quickly. The art isn't the best, but it grows on you quickly, but the humor and pathos of the show are what really hooks you. Highly recommended. |
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) |
Excellent |
NGE was revolutionary when it came out, and rightly so. It has great character design, impressive mecha design, great music, and a story that while dense, and sometimes overly complicated, will pull you in no matter how little you like the main characters. It's been pretty heavily commercialized, but that in itself should tell you how successful this show is. |
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) |
Excellent |
Lots of people didn't like the original ending to the show, so Gainax decided to throw the fans a bone. I liked the original ending, but I didn't complain.... |
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) |
Excellent |
A lot of people found NGE confusing... and if you did, then this one finishes up with all your questions. Another remake of the end of the series, it really turns things upside down. Very graphic storytelling, with some extremely visceral scenes.... |
New Dominion Tank Police (OAV) |
Good |
Not quite as fun as the first, but still captures the original spirit and craziness. I though it was just a bit too clean, though... and not having buaku and the catgirls as villains was distracting. Still, a fun story. |
NieA_7 (TV) |
Good |
Yoshitoshi ABe... you love his stuff or you hate it. I really like it.... and I like this one, too. The opening theme is extremely unusual for anime, involving a gravelly male voice, and the show just is more unusual from there. Not crazy, but different. Lots of fun. |
Ninja Scroll (movie) |
Good |
A great little action film, with some fun hentai action. I think it's the great character design that does it for most people. The story is only so-so, in my opinion. |
Noir (TV) |
Not really good |
I just couldn't get into it. I didn't like the characters, didn't like the premise.... just didn't like it and don't plan to finish it. The music is top notch, though... |
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) |
Very good |
A brutal series about paranoia and child exploitation, as well as the cheapness of life when we lose our freedoms. It's an ugly little show, but it will stick with you for a long time. I'd recommend it, but it's not something you're gonna want to watch a lot. |
Oh My Goddess! (OAV) |
Good |
OMG is a fun little comic series, and the anime is pretty faithful to the manga. It's a fun ride, and it has some great character design and music. If you're familiar with the manga, you'll love this show. |
Omishi Magical Theater Risky Safety (TV) |
|
|
Otaku no Video (OAV) |
Good |
Heh... one of the first real mockumentaries, it's a good look into what being a real "otaku" is all about... just a hint people... it ain't a compliment. |
Outlaw Star (TV) |
Very good |
I really got sucked into this universe, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this show. It combines some unusual character designs with some great mecha design and powerful storytelling to make a compelling series. |
Patlabor: The Movie (movie 1) |
Good |
Patlabor is another show that a lot of fans these days don't know much about. It's got it all, good character designs, great mecha designs, and a great story to wrap it all up in. I wish I still had it.... |
Perfect Blue (movie) |
Good |
Frankly, this is a genre I don't much enjoy, but it carries itself well enough to sell itself even to me. It's a great story of turnabout and plot twists that are sure to keep any suspense or mystery fan enthralled. Plus, great art and good music. |
Ping Pong Club (TV) |
Very good |
I like toilet humor. And buddy, does this one deliver. From the opening credits, there's no question that this is one trashy show. If you like fart jokes, bodily functions, and some pretty gross anatomy and sex jokes, you'll love this show. It's a great party anime.... |
Planetes (TV) |
Excellent |
Planetes is probably the best anime I've ever seen. It's highly realistic, highly charged, and simply gorgeous. You have to see this show. |
Plastic Little (OAV) |
Good |
Satoshi Urushihara is one of my favorite artists, and he delivers with this show. It's delightfully hentai in all the right parts, and has a good story besides. Add Urushihara's character designs and mecha, and it's got all the right bits. |
Please Teacher! (TV) |
Good |
Sure, it streches belief in a number of spots, but the gorgeous character design and the heartfelt story makes up for all of it. It's a bit contrived at times, but something that I really enjoyed. Don't see how she doesn't gain weight from all that pochy, though.... |
Please Teacher! (OAV) |
Good |
The infamous thirteenth episode, the animators took full advantage of not having to broadcast this episode to show a bit more of a hentai side to the show. If you liked the TV series, you'll love this. |
Please Twins! (TV) |
Good |
Continuing along from the Onegai Teacher series, it's still pretty contrived... and has a good bit more of a incest-y feel.... but not really. Kind of hard to describe, but it is pretty good, all the same. I do think the returning characters could have been dealt with better, though... |
Pom Poko (movie) |
Very good |
A wonderful movie that most people have never seen, and probably won't unless someone bothers to pick it up for distribution. It's an outcry against rampant modernism and the loss of tradition and traditional values in Japan, as well as a bit of eco-stuff. A great film, one that you'll really feel. If you're human.... |
Princess Mononoke (movie) |
Excellent |
Miyazaki is a genius. Buy this movie. Probably my favorite film of his other than Totoro. |
Project A-ko (movie) |
Good |
Ah, A-ko, A-ko, A-ko. One of my first comedy loves, how can you not get a kick out of the love child of Superman and Wonder Woman? Okay, that's not official, but all the same.... Introduce B-ko and love interest C-ko, shake well, and stand back... |
Project A-ko 2: Plot of the Daitokuji Financial Group (OAV) |
Good |
A-ko 2, properly, this one is tons of fun. Seeing B-ko's dad in her battle outfit makes it all worth it.... |
Project A-ko 3: Cinderella Rhapsody (OAV) |
Decent |
Not as fun as the first two, but still pretty fun when Ayumi sensei is trying to get married. More zany fun like the first two. |
Project A-ko 4: Final (OAV) |
Decent |
A show to wrap it all up, if you've been watching since the first, you'll love this. |
Project A-ko: Uncivil Wars (OAV) |
Good |
A-Ko and B-ko getting along? What? All the same, a lot of fun. |
RahXephon (TV) |
Good |
I don't see what all the fuss is about with this one. It has good character designs, but I didn't much like the mecha designs, other than the aircraft. I did rather like the story, but got confused with all the Mu stuff. I do like the music... Sakamoto Maaya is one of my favorites, and the OP to this one is great. |
Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China (movie) |
Good |
If you like Ranma, you'll like this one. Sure it takes some of the old cliches and revamps them into a new show, but hey, if you've been watching ranma for any length of time, that won't bother you much.... |
Ranma ½: Nihao My Concubine (movie) |
Good |
I like Ranma, and this is probably the best movie. Besides, it sorta jams all the characters up, and I dig that sort of thing. |
Read or Die (OAV) |
|
|
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) |
Good |
One of the first serious RPG anime, it's still one of the best in my opinion. Of course, it also started that whole freak-ass looking sword thing, but hey.... great tunes in this one as well. |
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (TV) |
Good |
The story isn't as strong as the first one, and I could do without the end sequences bonus theater thing, but the music and designs make this one worth the time. |
Riding Bean (OAV) |
Decent |
Ah, Gunsmith Cats before Gunsmith Cats. See the caucasian Rally Vincent? Yup... here's a spot where she lives with Bean. Anyway, if you know Bean, you'll love this series. Plus, it has real engine noises! Bean is one of the true badasses of anime, and you'll see that here.... |
Robot Carnival (OAV) |
Decent |
One of the early releases from Carl Macek's Streamline cinema, it's a show of shorts. Some are good, some are not, but it's generally a good show. |
Robotech (U.S. TV) |
Decent |
Ah, robotech. Because of this show, there are hordes of Macross fans who would like to string Carl Macek up and crucify him. Me, I like it... combining three series like that took a stroke of genius and balls the size of.... well, something big. Great mecha, but the Macross portion is obviously the best. |
Roujin Z (movie) |
Decent |
A scary show of what might happen when we quit caring about our old people. Amusing, but not really serious enough to be didactic. |
Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise (movie) |
Excellent |
A great film about the struggle to make your dreams come true and the motivation behind it. Also a bit of governmental politics keeps it interesting. Good characters, good mecha design, and and excellent story. |
Ruin Explorers - Fam & Ihrie (OAV) |
Decent |
Another RPG comedy series. I like this one, but it's not really a great show. I thought it had potential, but it wound up being too short to really stick around. |
Rumbling Hearts (TV) |
Excellent |
I'm not usually one for the dramatic series, but I gotta say, this series is freaking great. It winds up fairly predictably, but the characters are beautiful, the music is great, and sure, the story is cliched, but they carry it off so well. The show really deals with adult feelings and adult sentiments in a tasteful, adult fashion. Very highly recommended. |
Rune Soldier (TV) |
Very good |
Yet another RPG, adventuring series, but this one is a clear step up from the rest. It's got great designs, and great stories. I love it.... |
Sakura Diaries (OAV) |
Very good |
A surprisingly tender show by U-Jin, better known for rope trick anime. It's a great show about not quite forbidden love, but taken too far... Get the collectors edition, it's not censored like the four volume set. |
Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture (special) |
Bad |
Bad.... just.... bad. Don't watch this film. |
Scramble Wars (OAV) |
Good |
Heh... BGC and Gall Force, as well as a bunch of other AIC shows from the late eighties, early nineties, all superdeformed! Loverly.... loads of fun. Probably hard to get these days, I dunno... |
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) |
Excellent |
Confusing and deep. You'll watch this one a number of times before you figure it out. It's got a great soundtrack and solid character design, though.... |
Shrine of the Morning Mist (TV) |
Good |
|
Slayers - The Motion Picture |
Decent |
Slayers, Slayers, Slayers. But with better art.... |
Slayers: The Book of Spells (OAV) |
Decent |
More Slayers. If you like Slayers, you'll like this. |
Sol Bianca (OAV) |
So-so |
Another sci-fi show that is decent, but a bit cliched. Fun enough, though. |
Sorcerer Hunters (TV) |
Good |
A fun monster of the month show. Good character design, but it does show it's age... Why Chocola and Tira didn't use the costumes from the OAV throughout the entire original, I dunno.... |
Sorcerer Hunters (OAV) |
Good |
What Sorceror Hunters should have been from the start.... |
Spriggan (movie) |
Decent |
Very pretty film... great character and mecha design, good music, weak story. Still, a good film in all. |
Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (OAV) |
Good |
|
Steam Detectives (TV) |
Good |
|
Steel Angel Kurumi (TV) |
Good |
Cute and sweet. I like it. I don't generally like the Maid genre, but this one was heartfelt enough to persuade me to enjoy it. |
Steel Angel Kurumi Encore (OAV) |
Good |
The TV show was so successful, they had to milk the cow... but it turns out OK. It's a cute little addition to the series, and if you liked the TV show, you'll probably like this. |
Stellvia (TV) |
Very good |
Another great scifi show, this one melds CG and cel art extremely well. Also, given the sympathetic characters, and the extremely clean, colorful, and gorgeous character design made this show fun to watch, as well as a gripping story and great science. Sure, the premises are a bit questionable, and the ending is weak, but still a great ride. |
Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie |
Good |
Good film. Some solid Chun Li action, though I would have liked to see some of the other characters get more than just a cameo. Guile didn't get enough asskicking in.... but still recommended. |
(The) Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross (TV) |
Not really good |
The second part of the Robotech trilogy... and the weakest. Even as the standalone Japanese series, it was really weak. The mecha designs weren't bad, but the characters and story were. |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross (TV) |
Excellent |
The defining mecha show of the early eighties (Gundam be damned), this show is really what defined the genre. Great character design, incredible mecha design, great story, good music... what didn't it have... If I could only have five anime, this would be one. |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie) |
Very good |
A condensed version of the SDF Macross TV series, it stands extremely well on it's own. The character and mecha designs are almost exactly the same as SDF Macross with only very few differences, but the story changes are immense. Still, it's a great ride for those who don't want to wade through 36 episodes of Macross.... |
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: The Movie (OAV) |
Decent |
A solid show that takes place not after Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, but rather after the condensed version of Macross: Do you remember Love? it suffers a bit from a rather scattered story and mixed mecha design. The UN SPACY design is sharp and clean, but I found the enemy mecha to be rather poor. Not as good as Macross or Macross Plus.... |
Sword for Truth (OAV) |
So-so |
Another medieval Japanese film, and not as good as Ninja Scroll. Still, plenty bloody and lots of action. |
Tenchi Forever!: The Movie |
Decent |
Not as bad as the second, not as good as the first. But not a complete waste of time. And anyway, if you've stuck Tenchi out to here, you're going to enjoy it no matter what.... |
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV) |
Decent |
Well, the character design is great. The story, however, ain't. |
Tenchi the Movie - Tenchi Muyo in Love |
Decent |
Decent, but I thought it was boring. Good music, though. |
Tenchi The Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness |
So-so |
Ehh... ignore this one. Tenchi movies are pretty weak, and this one is pretty dull. I wasn't all that impressed. |
Tenchi Universe (TV) |
Decent |
Some new characters in this one make it interesting, and it keeps enough of the original series' feeling to make it interesting. Not as good as the first, not as bad as the third. |
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV) |
|
|
Those Who Hunt Elves (TV) |
Decent |
I like it... but where's all the nakedness? The art isn't all that hot, but it's still a fun little show. I like the whole merging universes thing... |
Trigun (TV) |
Excellent |
I'm a big fan of Trigun.... It's a morality show, not an action show, but it never gets preachy. The art isn't so hot, nor is the mecha design, but it's the story and music that really make this one good. |
Twin Angels (OAV) |
So-so |
An example of tentacle anime fare, with more of the La Blue Girl style sex-ninjas, it's all in good fun. Not the best, but good for a momentary excursion. |
Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend (OAV) |
Not really good |
Well... I've seen it. I don't much like it, either. |
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) |
So-so |
One of the greats of early anime fandom, but when you see it now, it's pretty dated. Still, it's a decent story, even if the art isn't. |
Vampire Princess Miyu (OAV) |
Good |
Good character design and good storytelling make this one worth watching. I'm not usually into the horror or supernatural genre, but this one is an exception. |
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) |
Very good |
Sure, it's for girls, but that hasn't stopped me from watching anything yet. It's got great characters, great mecha, and a pretty darn good story that keeps it going from start to finish. I'd recommend it to anyone. |
Z-Mind (OAV) |
Decent |
A fun little retro anime. If you're into big robot shows, I'm sure you'll love this one. |
