Air Master (TV) |
Very good |
CONS: The character designer cannot draw. At all. There is no comprehensible plot whatsoever.
PROS: Who cares? It's GYMNASTIC FIGHTING STYLE versus LUCHADORES and MEN WHOSE MASSIVE STRENGTH IS POWERED ENTIRELY BY THEIR SEX DRIVE. How is this not awesome? |
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (OAV) |
Good |
|
Aria the Animation (TV) |
Excellent |
This is pretty much the perfect way to kick back and relax. No high drama, no impending doom for Earth, just cute girls doing cute things and living their lives. In Neo-Venenzia. Which is on Mars. Except this Mars is covered in water, and is also called Aqua. |
Azumanga Daioh (TV) |
Excellent |
Bored? Need to laugh? Pull up a random episode. You probably knew that already, though. |
Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie |
Excellent |
|
Banner of the Stars (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Superb followup to the superb Crest of the Stars. Space opera never felt so good. |
Banner of the Stars II (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Supeb followup to the superb Banner of the Stars, which was a followup to the superb Crest of the Stars. Jinto just can't catch a break, I think. |
Banner of the Stars III (OAV) |
Masterpiece |
WHY IS THIS TWO EPISODES LONG? |
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) |
Very good |
The main gimmick of Dokuro violently killing Sakura at least twice an episode gets tiring after a while, but since it's only 4 (8) episodes long, that's not going to bother you very much. Plus, Dokuro-chan is super-cute. |
Bottle Fairy (TV) |
Very good |
Your teeth will rot out of your head after you watch this. Guaranteed. It's pure concentrated cuteness condensed into 12 minute format and delivered to you on two DVDs. Don't watch more than one episode at at time--it's deadly. |
Castle in the Sky (movie) |
Excellent |
|
Chobits (TV) |
Very good |
|
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) |
Excellent |
This, ladies and gentlemen, is what Gundam SEED Destiny SHOULD have been, but wasn't, because they needed an extra year between series. As it st ands, this series is one of the best-executed Sunrise series. Which is saying a lot. |
Cowboy Bebop (TV) |
Good |

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie |

|
Crest of the Stars (TV) |
Masterpiece |
This is just how I want my space opera: with lots of interpersonal character interactions. The relationship between Jinto and Lafiel is one of the best in anime, in my opinion. |
Emma: A Victorian Romance (TV) |
Excellent |
It's not based on the Jane Austen novel, but it's probably every bit as good. Regardless of whether it is or not, though, it's an excellent romance. And I am a sucker for romance. |
Eureka Seven (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Perfectly directed, perfectly designed, perfectly written, and perfectly executed. I cried three times while I watched. Anything that that happens to has to be good, right? |
Excel Saga (TV) |
Good |
|
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) |

|
Figure 17 (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Beautiful. If you can count this as mahou shoujo anime, then it's one of the best there is. One of my absolute favorite endings ever. |
FLCL (OAV) |

Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) |

|
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) |
Excellent |
|
Full Moon o Sagashite (TV) |
Masterpiece |
One of the best shoujo shows in existence. It's pure fluff for most of its run, but it's highly entertaining fluff. When it does take a more serious turn, it handles it competently and pulls off one of the most satisfying endings ever. |
G-On Riders (TV) |

Ghost Hunt (TV) |
Excellent |
If you ignore the first and third files, Ghost Hunt is excellent. Not really horror so much as just a series of really good (and really creepy, especially towards the end) ghost stories. |
Giant Robo (OAV) |
Masterpiece |
Possibly the most epic anime ever. Despite the name, it's not really a mecha show, but more of a "save the Earth from almost certain destruction" show. Which Imagawa Yasuhiro does extremely well. See: G Gundam. |
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) |
Masterpiece |
What can I say that hasn't been said already? A brilliant updating of the classic Yasutaka Tsutsui novel. It's funny, and it's emotionally touching. What more can I ask for? |
Godannar (TV) |
Very good |
|
(The) Good Witch of the West (TV) |
Very good |
|
Gunbuster (OAV) |
Masterpiece |
CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: I personally think this is Hideaki Anno's best mecha show. Full of pastiche and parody of mecha conventions, once the Gunbuster makes its debut the series pays off your time investment big-time. |
Gurren Lagann (TV) |
Excellent |
|
Haibane Renmei (TV) |
Excellent |
Wonderful, slow-paced anime by ABe. I still haven't seen anything else by him, but I have it on good faith that this takes the cake. |
Hajime no Ippo (TV) |
Masterpiece |
I hate sports, so therefore I tend not to care about sports anime. This has to be the most enjoyable sports anime since Ashita no Joe. 75 episodes and one movie of pure shounen bliss. |

Kamichu! (TV) |
Masterpiece |
I am a big fan of soft, slow-paced shows, and this is the best soft, slow-paced show ever. You can't help but feel happy after you watch an episode. |
Kanon (TV 2/2006) |
Excellent |
Kyoto Animation's remake of the Toei anime of the Key visual novel, Kanon is alternately funny and sad. Some real tearjerker moments lie within. |
Karin (TV) |
Very good |
Liking this is embarassing. Not really, but... |
Kiddy Grade (TV) |

Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) |

|
Kokoro Library (TV) |
Masterpiece |
My default answer to the question "What is your favorite anime?" It's certainly not the best anime of its kind, but it's that special anime for me. Plus, I am a librarian, so watching librarians in maid outfits act cute is just about the most heart-warming thing ever. |
Last Exile (TV) |
Very good |
|
(The) Legend of Black Heaven (TV) |
Good |
|
Lime-iro Senkitan (TV) |
Bad |
It's a total trainwreck of a show, but man, is it one of the best trainwrecks ever. At least until it tries to be serious. |
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (TV) |
Excellent |
Excellent drama. Some say the characters are stupid. To them, I say: Karada is twelve. TWELVE. Did you behave intelligently when you were twelve? Thought not. |
Macross 7 (TV) |
Excellent |
The best music of the Macross universe. Plus, saving the entire universe with rock 'n' roll is the best story concept ever. LISTEN TO MY SONG! |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV) |
Very good |
A terrible start gives way to epic battles between magical girls and STARLIGHT BREAKER. |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (TV) |
Excellent |
Starts with a bang, and never lets down for a moment. The crazy power mechanics in the first season are increased quite a lot in A's, leading to even MORE insanely overpowered attacks. |
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) |
Good |
|
Mahoraba ~Heartful days~ (TV) |
Very good |
It looks like it's going to be this terrible, awful harem series. Well, it's not. It's a wonderful, refreshing love story mixed with plenty of helpings of humor and a small slice of drama. Very heartful indeed. |

Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV) |

Is it the least serious or the most serious of the Gundam shows? Who knows. All I know is, Nether Gundam is the best Gundam ever. And this show is powerful, manly, and moving. |

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) |

Monster (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Possibly the best suspense anything I have ever seen. If you've read the manga, there's not much of a reason to watch the anime--literally nothing was changed in the conversion process. The anime is superbly directed, though, which makes it quite a pleasure to watch. |

Absolutely adorable. The Risky/Safety combination is brilliant, and I just have a soft spot for Masunari Koji's directing. He does these kind of shows masterfully. See also: Kamichu and Kokoro Library. |
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) |
Very good |
A successor to Fruits Basket, Ouran packs more shoujo-style comedy punch than anything I've seen. |
Overman King Gainer (TV) |
Excellent |
This is Tomino's brain on INSANE Completely over the top. Doesn't even try to make any kind of coherent sense. Which actually works well with Tomino's directing style. |
