On Thursday, the distribution company GKIDS posted the preliminary list of cities in North America where it "should" be screening Studio Ghibli films next year:
- Los Angeles (January)
- Dallas (January)
- Boston (February)
- Toronto (March)
- Austin (March)
- Washington, DC (April-May)
- Seattle (June)
- San Francisco (July)
GKIDS has been screening 15 films at the IFC Center in New York City from December 16 to January 12:
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (subtitled and dubbed)
- Castle in the Sky (subtitled only)
- My Neighbor Totoro (subtitled and dubbed)
- Kiki's Delivery Service (subtitled and dubbed)
- Only Yesterday (subtitled only)
- The Ocean Waves (subtitled and digital only)
- Porco Rosso (subtitled and dubbed)
- Pom Poko (subtitled and dubbed)
- Whisper of the Heart (subtitled and dubbed)
- Princess Mononoke (subtitled and dubbed)
- My Neighbors the Yamadas (subtitled and dubbed)
- Spirited Away (subtitled and dubbed)
- The Cat Returns (subtitled and dubbed)
- Howl's Moving Castle (dubbed only)
- Ponyo (dubbed only)
The American Cinematheque and Egyptian theaters in Los Angeles already confirmed that it will screen Ghibli films from January 26 to February 12. It lists the same films that New York City's IFC Center is screening, except for Ponyo.
Two of the films — Only Yesterday and The Ocean Waves — never had a North American home video release. GKIDS signed a deal with Studio Ghibli to distribute 13 of the studio's anime films from 1984 to 2002 — including Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Spirited Away — in North America. However, Disney will retain the home video rights to the same films, while GKIDS will hold the theatrical and non-theatrical distribution rights.
