I think it's sad that they think this will sale well enough to be worth licensing in the US. I kind of have to wonder why Sentai has been licensing anime, before or shortly after the first episode airs, I mean is that really a good business model? What if the show turns out the be a dud?

I'm thinking this was probably a bundle deal with Moretsu Pirates, since they're both Starchild series.

This would be a question asked about all anime, even the crap you happen to like.

I'll just copy what i posted elsewhere and elaborate upon it:

Sentai has also been one of the companies to most actively embrace digital distribution, (simulcasts, streaming and DTO) and they have to supply content to the Anime Network. Most of their simulcasts begin running on TAN VOD within several weeks of their final broadcast, which is something we don't see from anyone else. A lot of these series are acquired not for DVD and bluray sales but also for digital and TV distribution. Some people aren't willing to pay for a sub-only DVD but they are willing to watch it for free on VOD. Physical media is important but they also need to actively invest in digital, which they are doing.

The fact that Sentai has announced it as sub-only and DVD suggest they have fairly low expectations for it. So likely they didn't pay much for it, especially since the simulcast was already locked up by Crunchyroll. The process of dubbing a show is often more expensive these days than acquiring the license itself. By skipping out on that cost, Sentai has insured that the sales don't have to do particularly well for the DVD release to break even.

The show will also run on Anime Network at some point, probably not too long after it finishes it stream online if the summer season shows were any indication.

Of course, by acquiring the show ahead of time they could end up saving money on a show that strikes it big. If the show is very successful before it's acquired, the licensing cost will probably increase. Sentai also has the equal potential of saving a good amount of money by licensing early.

Like all entertainment, the risk of loosing money is pretty high. If they keep their expectations and costs in line (dubbing being the largest) than they should do fine. They have been plenty of times where a show bombed not because it didn't move sufficient units, but because the company overpaid for the rights or spent too much money localizing it (this was often ADV and Geneon's problem.)

This wouldn't surprise me. Funimation has indicated that they don't prefer to do bundle deals so they don't happen with them often anymore. If Sentai was more willing to do bundle deals, it could give them a legs up on negotiations for certain properties. Their willingness to release product sub-only also gives them a good chance of making money even on a show that is relatively unpopular.

I'd love to see some of the great Starchild series that have gotten missed over the years, like Mahoraba and Minami-ke, as well as a home video release of Hanamaru Kindergarten. Probably an extreme long shot on those, but I still hope...

A lot of people have requested Mahoraba over the years, so I wouldn't be too surprised if Sentai had at least looked into it. But I can't help wonder if there is something holding it up from being licensed over here.

Oh how much I yearn for a release of Minami-ke. Mahoraba would be great too. They don't need to get the Asread stuff, just the first season of the Minami sisters would be fine.

The first (Daume) series is actually all I've seen at this point. Never got around to trying the Asread anime.

Probably a safe bet for them considering how they are marketing it, and the actual material itself.

Sentai probably figures that pandering shows like this will do better than the shows you all mentioned wishing that Sentai did them.

I mentioned them because they are from the same Japanese licensor, not because I was moaning that should have gotten them instead of Papakiki (which is getting a good bit better with the second episode, I'd say - I don't have high hopes given the series' director, but it's not bad so far). If anything, Sentai licensing several titles from a particular company makes it seem more likely they could pick up others. Either way, I don't complain about titles I don't like getting licensed.

Wait, isn't this 2-cour? Why does this say there are only 12 episodes? I could've sworn there'd be a 13th on the Japanese DVD releases, too.

I'm confused...

The TV show is only 12 episodes long and will have a special 13th episode when they do the DVD/BD releases.
