That's interesting to find out that Shiratori wrote No-Rin without much farming knowledge. I grew up on a farm and found it pretty enjoyable, so I'd say his interest in the topic came through pretty well.

Other than the shower scene, I never thought the loli content in the show was that bad. I do think the "bride" scene was really dumb, really awkward, kinda cringey, and didn't really add anything to the show though.

It apparently is true that there's a lot of younger amateur female shogi players, but very few professional players, and that for whatever reason the genders are separated and not considered equal. There's a lot of silliness in the show, but it does seem to get the shoji stuff right.

It makes me a little sad the way he talks about things being "requirements", because that is often just antithetical to artistic creativity and good writing, but a lot of people are still able to work effectively within those boundaries, so I guess it is what it is.
I think it makes perfect sense for him to include the loli characters, given his options, but while he obviously tried to walk around it, there isn't really any doubt that they aren't just meant to be cute in a little sister kind of way, unless you are also a fan of things like Oreimo. But hey, whatever. If he wants to write about it in fiction, and he thinks it will sell, ain't nothing wrong with that.

Same. He obviously did enough research to make it believable!

The part where he says that boys can master shogi faster than girls is interesting to me. I wonder if its just misogyny on his part or if it's more systemic, where girls actually can't master shogi as quickly because they're not taught as seriously based on the false assumption that they are naturally worse players.

The part where he talk about other light novels is interesting too. He names two notoriously horny incest series but focuses on how they're about the lives of creators. Not making any judgement either way, but it's the polar opposite of what people in the West tend to latch onto about those books.

You know, I just came here for this interview after all the backlash the animes first episode received (I sat this one out based on first impressions) to check out if he talks about those things and what kind of person he is, then there comes this gem of a sentence.
Rarely have I grinned so smug in having my presumptions reaffirmed.

I assume it's because they're not encouraged to follow up with the game? I mean, now knowing that if i was a female (i'm not btw), i wouldn't be able to be a pro... i'm pretty sure i would just stick to playing the game every so often if i liked it enough... That and the above assumption about people not teaching them as thoroughly might not be that of the mark tho i don't think it's just because people think they're weaker, as i've stated.

Very nice interview. Smile
Shiratori-sensei seems like a great guy, and the amount of work he puts into his novels is superb. The true-to-life depictions of the shogi world are handled very well.
I've said it before, but it makes complete sense for Ryuo to rank #1 in Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!
I was in such awe after reading the first volume last year, because it was one of the greatest experiences I'd ever had reading a light novel. It was just so good!

And perhaps because of that, seeing how so many people (especially on this site) reacted negatively to the anime after its premiere was probably one of the most disappointing receptions to an anime I've ever seen in my life. Ryuo deserves to be much much more highly regarded here in the West, but it just isn't getting the attention it deserves at all, which is a huge shame.

Though I guess to be fair, the anime is moving at a pretty fast pace, so some of the nuances that made the novels work so well ended up lost in adaptation. Yaichi's match against the blind eternal Meijin, Tsukimitsu, being cut from the most recent episode is a particularly noteworthy loss...

But even putting that aside, the anime should have had way more positive reception. The fact that it didn't is baffling.

It is only his opinion but it was amusing to see that of all the things he could have picked that her learning shogi quickly as a girl player was the part that he considered unrealistic.

To be fair considering the fanservice scene that it had in the first episode it got a decent response from ANN which normally would have given humorous images for the rating instead of numbers.

It's very cool that a light novel with a subject like shogi is being translated into English and sold. I do wonder if it will encourage Bookwalker to maybe license No-Rin at some point too.

Why is this series not being reviewed? It is actually quite an entertaining show if you don't treat it that seriously.

Because ironically, the "reviewers", at least the current gen are made of people who are pretty discriminatory.
You would turn back to 00's and this would be far from a big deal and nobody would bat an eye like Saki was but now it's like asking a fish to climb a tree.

He's probably basing this on factual data. There are many factors as to WHY it's this way, but that doesn't change the fact that it IS this way. Girls not being pushed as hard is probably a big factor.

Because ANN reviewers and many readers are extremely offended by even minor loli-fan service. I don't get it at all. I honestly question if people are just closet lolicons and don't want to risk getting turned on.

Damn shame. There is no fanservice in this show other than in episode 1, and ever since then it has been a barrage of well-placed loli jokes + entertaining character drama + slice of shounen. But honestly, seeing a reviewer constantly thrashing about the sexual loli fanservice and innuendo might be a worse fate than not getting reviews.

Because sports anime Saki was not that big in the west at all. Remember your votes are how streaming shows are picked
