I wish more American unions weren't complacent with mergers. Must be why they're splitting apart.

I'd say that corporate ownership is none of the union's business. If a company's owners want to sell or merge the company, the union shouldn't be able to sabotage the sale.

A union's purpose is to protect its members from exploitation and make sure they get fair and equitable compensation and working conditions.

Too many unions have strayed into corporate politics, and other areas, and often neglect their primary purpose in order to achieve tangent goals.

For the record, I'm a social democrat (in the international sense, Americans would quite simply call me a "socialist," which isn't quite the same as a "bleading heart liberal.") who believes in the need for unions. I just don't like how far they stray from their purppose.

I would think that a merger would be the union's business, as often times many jobs are lost during the reorganization of the company and the corporation that is merging with the company may have a poor record with unions. Now I do not believe unions should completely disrupt the process, but be a major contibutor to discussions.
