I came across this slightly old article http://www.iwaynet.net/~sos/fandubs.html on the Save Our Sailors website, and am curious to know whether fandubs are really produced anymore. I would think that such a thing would be fun to make as a fan, but god-awful to watch Anime smallmouth I don't want any links to fandubbing sites, but I'd love to hear if people have actually seen such thing, or just general opinions on the subject. Anime smile

There's been a thousand of them announced, and all fold within an episode or two, especially when they realize that with music and FX tracks they have to either re-create from scratch buying a ton of soundtracks and trying to create the sound FX, or that it comes off like a bad radio play.

This is why fan PARODY dubs are the only ones that have ever actually succeeded.

I've seen a fandub before. I used to (and might still) have the sixth DBZ movie fandubbed. I preferred it to FUNimation's dub of the TV series because it retained the original music and, I assume, was a faithful translation of the script (because it was a real fandub, not a parody). But the voice acting wasn't terribly good, and I eventually replaced it with a fansub.

I also saw the parody fandub, This Is Otakudom, which I found to be pretty well done.

I'm still trying to find those sailor stars fandubs because it sounds like a lot of work has been done of them, so they might be worth checking out.

However, I have experienced 2 fandubs already. One to the first episode of Naruto, and it was HOR-RI-BLE. It just made me want to puke I think, and I really couldn't finish watching the whole thing. Another was to ep 1 of the live action sailor moon series, which wasn't anywhere near as bad as the Naruto one, but it was still kinda bad.

Those Sailor Stars dubs are the only fandubs I'll risk torture for. I've heard their dubbing of the opening theme, and it wasn't bad.

I believe I saw Akira fandubbed on the internet somewhere. It was um ... - bad. Really bad. Worse then the re-dub that pionerr did to it.

*Learned to stay far FAR away from anything Fandubbed*

Fandub, not fansub.

There's a fandub being done on Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (live). I find that the biggest problem with fandubs is that there's no quality control. You'll have some actors that send in crisp, clear recorded lines, and some actors with muted lines that have a lot of background static. They really would be better if they took the actors' available technology into consideration when they do casting for it.

Isn't it the same way with fanSubs? There'a probably less ways to mess up a sub than a dub, but who hasn't seen a fansub with washed out lettering or translations that don't make any sense?

I saw one of Dirty Pair once, at my old anime club circa 1996, but it wasn't a straight dub, it was a dub full of in-jokes about what the fan-dubbers think of the dubbing companies; 22 minutes of TEH FUNNY about Carl Macek and Trish Ledoux. I'd say that, as with pretty much any joke about specific dubbing company heads, it was only funny within the minds of the people putting together the fandub, but since it got shown at my club, someone there must have found it funny.

I do a little bit of amateur voice acting. A lot of the projects out there are Sailor Moon projects. But there's a few communities out there that do fandubs. There's some good stuff out there but there's some bad stuff too Anime smile

I seen a fandub part of Inuyasha it was so-so and also the fandubbers only did a part of the episode and not the openings or endings which I'm glad they didn't do. I'm sticking to my regular anime.

Care to say what you worked on? I'm curious. Smile

Anyway, this is going to come across kinda obvious, but fandubs are only bad because they don't try hard enough. There's a lot of amatures in the parody circle that do some excelent work on a budget. Problem with fandubs is that they're rushed, they try doing in a few days what a parody group does in a year, there just isn't any efficient way of doing fandubs quickly. Therefore, it really isn't fare to compare the two.

(Oh, and the crew that did "This is Otakudom" will be showing off their next project soon enough!)

You should see it, I've been there alot of times. Very Happy [/url]
