Do you feel embarrased, or at least a little anxious when shopping for anime or manga in person? Or, has there ever been a time when you've been given weird looks by people in the store for the stuff you've bought?

For some reason I can't help be feel a tiny bit alienated when browsing for anime titles at my local Suncoast. It seems like with all of the time I've spent buying anime there, there have only be a handful of people who will actually check out the aisle. And given how some of the covers look for the more risque titles on the shelf, it certainly amplifies the awkwardness of standing alone in that section amongst passer-byers.

And as far as receiving weird looks from people over the stuff I've bought, a year ago one cashier sort of looked at me funny when handing them a Bottle Fairy DVD for purchase (in retrospect, it's understandable given how cute the covers look... and that a guy was purchasing it).

I've sometimes felt a little anxious about buying anime in person but I've rarely gotten any weird questions or anything like that. I usually buy all of my anime online just so I can avoid those "you like those Japanese porn cartoons" looks... >_>;;

I'm not really embarassed when it comes to buying it in person, but asking for anime as a birthday/Christmas present is really awkward for me. It makes me wonder if my relatives actually think bad about me watching "children's cartoons".

I used to be like that, but I'm largely over it. In fact, today I stupidly bought a moderately pornographic figure in person. In retrospect, I should've ordered the non-pornographic version on the internet instead but...but it was just sitting there, and I wasn't going to be going back any time soon...

I use to be embarrassed but have grown to not give a rats ass how people look at me but i can understand it however some people cant control how they feel. the more devoted i got to anime, the less I've started to care. I've been given wierd looks especially when buying misleading covers that show half naked girls like welcome to the nhk and black lagoon. as for looking through the aisles, i see people in my peripherals staring on the anime side and then me but i usually just ignore it. i even encounter other people buying at the same time and they tend to shy away. i remember once i was talkin to someone who was lookin at a title i already bought and i recommended him to go ahead and get it. we ended up talkin for a bit while other people passed through. recently though I've been so wrapped up at looking at the synopsis and unique artboxes that i block out all things around me.

I've never had that problem while purchasing anime, I know I'm not the only grown man buying very cute boxsets at the store. I do get some "cool"(as they would say) with a I wouldn't be cought dead with that reaction.
After I get home is when the awkwardness begins. As soon as my older brother walks in my room and sees the product he'll do a "What the hell"and leaves dissapointed.

Awkward? Pssh. The last time I bought some anime -- I had a big grin on my face. Very Happy Twisted Evil

Granted, I tend to spend more time at the anime aisle "window" shopping -- just to curb the temptation to spend. The biggest thing I have in my mind during those times are the prices -- not what other people think. Besides, the average stranger is busy browsing around and doing their own shopping.

If I could, I'd stand at that aisle naked. However, that'd warrant an arrest.

I don't get nervous at all when walking into a non-anime themed store and buying their anime. There was one thing I was nervous about buying, and that was hentai at Fry's. The first time I did it I wore a hooded sweater and tried to conceal as much of my face as much as possible. When I walked up to the open register to make my purchase, the cashier happened to be a middle-aged looking woman. I tried not to say much during my purchase, but when the cashier handed me my change she told me, "Don't be embarrassed!" That was interesting, but I think somehow that gave me the confidence to shop for hentai in that store (not that I do it that often, but). The next time I did it the cashier was this young guy and he said, "Uh, you're over 18, right?" in which I responded with "Yes I am!" and whipped out my driver's license. Amazing how much you can change something.

I have never experienced it. I usually buy anime dvd with my friends who are also into anime and sometimes with my sister so the possibility of feeling awkward or embarrassed while buying is almost zero since I'm always with someone else.

I personally have never felt awkward buying anything period, which includes hentai or anything of an adult nature. I like what I like and I enjoy my hobbies regardless of what others think. I do often get looks when buying anime in stores, and not simply online, and I just ignore them. I mean why should I care what some person thinks standing next to me or ringing me up? They don't know me and if it's another shopper I'll probably never see them again anyway so why worry? Besides, if they stare at you or your dvd then stare at what they're looking at and return the favor.

Absolutely. Infact because of that, I soley buy Anime online. Of course, that doesn't really solve the problem of people I know seeing this stuff in stores and being missled, so I just avoid telling them I like anime at all. Its really not too dificult. The best TV in the house is in my room. Of course, that creates the problem that they would tend to assume that it was something bad if they found out due to all the secrecy. I find the best remedy for that is to act equally secretive about everything. Its lead to people thinking I'm a paranoid shut-in. But on the upside, it allows my actual secrets to remain unnoticed. Besides, being paranoid is fun.

Alas, you're a braver man than I. But if you're up for it I encourage it. Don't allow them shackle your genitals of freedom with their harsh cotton pants of opression. Wink

I don't think it's understandable - it's bad business . For all the cashier knew, maybe you were buying it for your daughter, niece or kid sister (depending on your age). Not a bright idea to make you feel awkward and turn you off from possible repeat returns.

I've never felt uncomfortable myself, but then again I'm not interested in risque titles or anything particularly kiddy, so I've never bought anything that would raise an eyebrow.

If you feel strange buying anime and manga in mainstream stores, the answer might be to go to comic and other specialty shops instead of the big chains if that's a possibility where you live. Alot of the cashiers in those places are high school and college age people who are fans themselves and understand - at least in my experience.

Thats so funny! Last night while I was browsing through the anime section (At Frys!) I put my hoodie up.

There is a simple solution to this, just dont buy/look at anime alone. If your with someone else you don't look as lameass/pathetic & when doushe-bag people give you looks you can just give them looks back and thats the end of that.

Yes. Stepping into HMV I have to wait until I feel it's clear...why did they stick the small anime selection at the end of an aisle? So instead of maybe just standing in the middle of an aisle, hidden, I'm standing in one of the main routes to move around the store.

It took me five minutes to finally go to the checkout, when no other customers were around, to buy the Love Hina boxset Embarassed It was just as painful an experience as buying, erm, Naruto.

However I brought Ghost in the shell SAC II without a second thought. However semi naked women= much awkwardness for me- and it's a frequent occurence in this medium.

I don't feel awkward buying anime at all. I'm just as comfortable looking through it as I am looking through the video game sections or the movie sections. No one has ever given me a reason to be uncomfortable. Hell, I bought the Elfen Lied singles at Best Buy without a second thought and the cashier (who was a pretty cute girl) didn't even seem to care. I said "Aw, I was hoping for a strange look." She said, "Nah. People get this stuff all the time."

There was an interesting time where these two adults were looking through the section and began thinking anime was porn (they saw the When they Cry cover art) so I got to explain to them that it's not. Good times.

I buy most of my stuff online these days anyway because the prices are usually cheaper.
