I was thinking yesterday that it was about time I got Haruhi and I was wondering what the packaging was like so I have a couple of questions:
I know it's not the usual Bandai bricks, but is the box as flimsy as it looked in the picture I saw? At first It looked like a Geneon box set (Shana, Fate/Stay, Karin, Ergo Proxy, etc), but then I started thinking it looked more like my Media Blasters box for Futari Ecchi (pretty much paper folded to look like a box). Which is it?
What kind of box comes with Volume 1 LE version? From the picture on Rightstuf it looks pretty big, but I know it's to hold all that extra stuff and I want to know how the actual DVD's go in there. It sort of looks like the front opens like doors and the DVD's slide in. I've never bought a Limited Edition box before so I have no clue how this kind of thing works. At first I was going to get all 4 LE's, but that would've been over $130 during a Bandai sale plus my Membership. So I passed and thought I should just get the one that comes with the box.
If the complete collection has a not-crappy box I'll just get that and possibly get the LE's down the road for a double dip. I'm not a stickler on boxes, but I like being able to hold a box and feel like it's somewhat sturdy. If it is bad then I'll probably end up getting one LE at a time.

I'm not a fan of the Haruhi box. It's the first time I've run into this kind of design for DVDs, but you have to open the top of the box which is a lid. The four volumes are jammed in the box and it's not easy to take one out when all four are in it. I ended up tearing the top a bit the first time I took out the first volume. The box itself is reasonably sturdy...definitely a thicker stock than the flimsy paper sleeve that Viridian used for its Blue Gender collection.

Blood summed up the budget release fairly well. I haven't messed with the LE releases any for haruhi, but I'd expect that to be a high quality box. The LE release in general is a LOT better, so if you have the extra funds, definitely go that direction.

Boxsets are lame if they're any sort of that flimsy stock paper and not my 2-3mm cardboard artboxes with thin DVDs inside. Anything else is lame, even those sets with all the DVDs in one case.

Here, I took some pics of mine for you.
LE box with a Mushishi DVD beside it for size comparison.
The front panels flip open (there is a tiny magnetic strip embedded in the packaging that keeps the doors closed. As you can see here, the 4 DVDs fit on the top. It's a rather snug fit, but there is a ribbon that goes behind the cases so you can pull it to pop the DVDs out. Below the DVDs is a drawer that slides out and can hold all the extra junk, sans pillow cases, that the LE sets all come with.
Aaaand, here's the drawer emptied. Yay junk.

That certainly isn't the box that came with my set. I've thought about scrapping it as a holder, cutting it for the pics, and place the DVDs on the shelf because it's so damn flimsy.
No matter. It's what's on the DVDs that's most important (excluding the propaganda crap regarding fan subs).

I'm a huge fan of the individual LE Haruhi dvds. The artbox pictured above that comes with the first dvd is perfect for storing little collectibles like charms and keychains and stickers in the pull out drawer. If it wasn't for that box I'd probably have lost all kinds of stuff by now. And on top of all that you get the Broadcast Order dvds which make watching the series a whole lot easier for me =) They're a lot more expensive than buying the complete set, but if money isn't a problem than I highly recommend them.

The boxes that the LE sets come in, other than the first one I took pics of, are all very flimsy. They're not designed to store the DVDs, they're just designed to hold the stuff on the shelf until you get it home and put it in your LE treasure chest. I long ago did what you're considering doing (though I seem to have misplaced the cutouts). :\

That crap pissed me off so much. Here I am, buying an overpriced LE box set BECAUSE I WATCHED THE FANSUBS, and the DVD extras trampled all over me. Pissed me off. But you're right.

You mean the "crap" at the end of all the ASOS Brigage episodes about people that only ever watch fan subs and never buy official DVDs? That didn't seem like crap to me, maybe a tad preachy, but not "crap".
Regardless of that I have the complete collection box of this series myself, it seems sturdy enough for what it is, and I have yet to have any problems with it.

I have the complete collection box as well and really like it. I find it nice and sturdy myself, quite enjoyable.

Thank you veers for those pictures. I think those pics swayed me to wait to get the LE box (if Rightstuf get's them back in stock soon). I have another question now: I hear the other LE boxes have both chronological and broadcast whereas the regular releases don't, is that true? Am I really going to have to buy all four LE sets to get both orders?

Yes, mostly- volume 1 only features the chronological order- but you'll obviously need to buy the LE of that for the box. 2-3 each come with a second disc featuring the broadcast order.

Son of a...OK. Thanks for that info. I think I'll just get them off buy.com and supermart.com or wait for a few good Rightstuf sales and specials if they come back in stock when there is one.
