Saw the headline this morning in the print version. It's mostly talking about the Speed Racer film, but also talks about the other anime-to-live action movies coming out.

"They aren't smirking when they made this," Silver says. "It meant a lot to them. It showed them that animation wasn't just The Flintstones. You could push the envelope."

This bothers me immensely, lets treat a show aimed at children as a semi-serious family film! I sure hope this isn't going to try and act "all growed up."

Why does it bother you? The quotation clearly refers to the way the Wachowskis grew up with Speed Racer, and how it showed them what you could do with animation besides goofy shows like The Flintstones. What's wrong with that?

Not that I'm fond of the Wachowskis. I think they're vastly overrated (and yes, I realize that makes me sound like an envious elitist snob... it's still the truth). But the day I see it as a negative thing that someone grew up with anime and realized that it showed new ways of using animation to tell stories, is the day I hang up my fan badge and start subscribing to Better Homes and Gardens.

But they also acknowledge that the genre appeals to a select group. "Generation X is very familiar with anime," says Zac Bertschy, executive editor of the Anime News Network, a website dedicated to the genre. "But if you're not in that age group, there may be a learning curve."

Interesting that they would quote Mr. Bertschy, but they're still calling anime a genre. I'm also wondering what this "generation X" is. Anime does appeal to a very small group but little of that has to do with age, as seen in the "43 year old sues library" thread in Talkback.

Most people posting in that thread between the ages of @ 26-43 could be considered Generation X. We know who we are.

The reference is relevant. Most GenXers were probably first exposed to anime by Speed Racer, whether on broadcast television in the early 70s, or on MTV in the early 90s.

I see, when we're just talking about Speed Racer and other anime from the 70's, it narrows down the age group to become Generation X.

I'm only 18 and I've never actually seen Speed Racer, but I'm still interested in this film, and whether it opens the door for more anime to live-action adaptations is still yet to be seen. Being a family-friendly film is definitely a start.

Abunai-I said that because I thought Mr. Silvers was speaking about the way the "brothers" are directing the film and thus saying that the film isn't supposed to be a ridiculous laugh. For Speed Racer to be changed into something that wasn't supposed to be just for kids makes me disappointed in this film. I don't want to see seriousness in Speed Racer, I'm sorry, save it for a show that has a message.

im really undecided about some of the movies on the list since I've only seen a couple of the animes mentioned in the article above.

First i must say that i think spielberg will utterly destroy GitS. why you may ask? because all of his other futureistic movies have made me cringe. if it was about aliens or giant sharks that would be awesome but i look back at two of his future movies and scream. AI artificial intelliegnce and Minority Report should have been good movies but i didn't really like either of them or mostly AI. i just always thought that there was something evil about Haley joel....

If it makes you feel any better, it hasn't been confirmed whether or not Spielberg will do the directing, but who knows, this might be his chance to finally make a great futuristic sci-fi movie. I actually liked AI and Minority Report, so I have no real concerns for Spielberg as a director for GitS. Also, the movie will be in 3D, if that is any indication that it will be a much more action-oriented movie than Oshii's adaptations.

And what's wrong with Haley Joel Osment? I thought he was great as Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

I agree with you on that, but to avoid starting another argument that resulted in a locking I won't go into why.

As for Speed Racer, I grew up watching dubbed and edited episodes, so I don't really consider it an anime not to be tampered with. I'm not fussed about the adaption just as much as I wouldn't be fussed if they made a live action Batfink.

Not really interested in it but Speed Racer looks like it could be a start to something.

Well mainstream acceptance isn't THAT bad.

Personally I want to see it for what kind of CG they did 'cause almost the whole thing is CG.

I'm not sure what everyone's whining about. This article treats anime, (despite calling it a genre, not a medium, Brad Bird is steaming somewhere,) more respectfully and accurately than any other news article I've read.

I may pass on the Speed Racer movie, though. I just don't care for Speed Racer, you know? I'll hang around for DBZ, Akira, and GitS.

Less about whining about the portrayal of anime and more about how the "brothers" may be making a serious Speed Racer movie meaning it'll probably be garbage if it doesn't make fun of itself.

Not necessarily, amigo.

The original TV series was COOOORRRNY! However, the premise itself, while futuristically ridiculous, isn't absolutely beyond hope for a more tolerable telling. The brothers themselves said Speed Racer "wasn't pathos," and never would be, so they're NOT going to try and stick a dramatically gripping subplot in here. I mean, look at the cast for a hint on mood here.

It looks to me like a fun family movie, albeit not a very outstanding item save for visuals. If you want it to be less than that, aka more satirically preposterous, then you have clearly A) seen Speed Racer and B) didn't like it. I didn't either, but that doesn't mean I'd want a movie about it to be equally bad and pointless if they can improve it to family movie status without radically altering the pop-candy kid stuff mood.
