My daughter, 17 and has autism. She is and has been enamored with anime/manga for years. Every day is spent adding to the scrolls of cartoons she has drawn. Each scroll is over 50 feet long. Next year we are going to California on vacation and I want to know if there is anything or anywhere related to the anime/manga world we could visit? This is a vacation she is planning and keeps talking about Hollywood, CA to go see the anime/manga worlds and anything related. I want to make this a trip she will find worthwhile and possibly educational. Does anyone know of any company, production company, writers blog, even a printing press anywhere in California that can help me???

I only know about north California since I'm from there. You can check out all the Asian museums in San Francisco.
like this one http://cartoonart.org/about-us/. the Asian Art museum also has alot of Japanese related stuffs too. I don't know about Hollywood or LA, but You can always go to Anime expo during July 4th weekend. |

Unfortunately, no anime takes place in California (or the US for that matter). As far as anime related places to visit, again there really isn't much except for several of the larger expos as someone already mentioned. I would have some questions as to whether or not an expo environment would be suited to someone suffering from autism, but you would know her particular situation better than we could.
In northern California you have the Pixar studio (its in a suburb of Oakland) and Industrial Light and Magic (Steven Spielburg's studio), but I am not sure that either gives tours. If you are going to be in that part of California it may be worth looking into. Good luck |

Note: I don't attend cons, so my information is limited here, but I do know several take place in California during the year.
You may want to do a bit more research and check out anime conventions and plan your trip around them. As others said, there's really not much in terms of anime in California. Larger conventions also have a better chance at bringing guests, and it's possible an arranged meeting can be formed. Anyone else know of Cally cons forthcoming to help out here? |

Not sure what this has to do with the OP's question, but I do believe Kaleido Star is supposedly in Los Angeles (although very inaccurately) and Red Garden takes place in New York. Anyway, for the con scene, Sac Anime (Sacramento) has 2 conventions a year. It used to be a pretty small convention, but I'm not sure how big it's gotten in recent years. There's also Fanime during Memorial Day weekend in San Jose, that's probably the biggest Northern California anime convention. It's a fan run con, as opposed to an industry con. And like people have said, there's Anime Expo which is the country's biggest anime convention in Los Angeles, usually on 4th of July weekend (it's slightly earlier this year). As for manga/anime companies, Viz Media is based in San Francisco; Seven Seas Entertainment and Digital Manga Publishing are based in Los Angeles (Gardena, to be exact for DMP; FYI, this is mainly a yaoi publisher). I don't know if they do tours or anything; doubtful, but I guess you could ask them. Last edited by kyokun703 on Tue Nov 08, 2011 3:57 pm; edited 1 time in total |

IIRC these anime are set in the USA.
Baccano! Chrono Crusade El Cazador de la Bruja (other shows might be in this topic: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8643&start=30) San Diego Comic-Con, in the summer. Maybe try Warner Brothers, or Nickelodeon studios? Not really anime related, but LEGOland is in Carlsbad, CA. Not sure if Bang Zoom ever lets the public in the studios, that is a dubbing company that does a ton of popular shows. Maybe Florida would be better? I remember going to MGM Studios at Walt Disney World and they had a walk through tour of some of the animation stuff. Of course this was over 20 years ago... |

There is a Japantown in Los Angeles. They usually have a lot of stores there that have anime related merchandise. Also, if she has already been exposed to anime, there should be many things related to the culture that she will recognize.

sounds like bs to me, but OK. Well was until I read this:
"Every day is spent adding to the scrolls of cartoons she has drawn. Each scroll is over 50 feet long." You don't ask these questions online. Anyway click these links, call people, and if you care hustle: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art10144.asp http://www.fanime.com/anime-clubs/ http://otakuwanted.com/shopselect.php?shopID=143 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Town Also, call clubs as obviously they know whats what. They live in California and are more active in the anime world than probably most people on this forum. Meaning they will give you better answers as so far the answers you got have been shit simply because the people who have posted so far don't know. Oh explain your situation too. You should because then everyone will be nice to you. Don't ask why. Just how the world works. Anytime people hear the word disorder. Kinda funny really. Who knows, you might land a sweet deal. Use what you got...... |
