I heard that the first movie was terrible. I haven't seen it but I probably won't.

Dark Horizons said that it might be a prequel a la Matrix. I can't say I liked the first movie all that much and the second one looks somewhat interesting. Given how well the Animatrix did and the animation in Kill Bill, they are probably thinking about giving it a shot to attract more of an audience. It's still a rumour though.
