Saw the Ad here and while I'm not really interested in doing it myself, I was wondering what other people thought. It's based around the regular online renting plans of having so many out at one time, unlimited rentals per month. Either 2 or 4 at a time and they ship 2 books at once. I can imagine that's to cut shipping. Other than Libraries, or reading at a book store like a Barnes and Noble, I've never seen anything like this before. Anyone use it? Would like to use it? It'd be nice, comparing to dvds, that there would have to be major damage to a volume to need a replacement. All a dvd needs is a nice crunch or bend in the mail and it's done. It's also access to something where location could be a factor in how easy it is to obtain. Sure you could always order online, but if you just want to try out something without having to buy first, some might need to drive an hour to a store. Was going to check the forums to see an estimate of how old the site was, but it seems they're down. It is a very neat option and with good shipping times I'd be interested, if I read more manga ![]() ![]() Atleast people are trying different methods to get it out there. |

Going out of my way to rent a manga seems kind of annoying. Manga aren't very expensive so unless I bought an entire series at once I don't feel like I lost much by getting a failure. Most of the libraries in my area have a few manga already though so since my needs are met I'm kinda biased against the concept.

I personally enjoy owning books. Be it regular books, comics, or manga. I like having the actualy hard copy I can hold and read whenever I want, especially since I re-read so much of my collection. However, while not that expensive manga can add up for those long series. Especially shonen jump titles. So for those long series I could see myself using a service like this. A netflix for manga basically. I think it's a good idea to help get manga out there to more people. Especially those that live way in the country or away from a city of any sort.

Yeah owning the actual book is nice but it's just like dvds, some people just always want to rent. Going with blind_assassin though, it's true manga is really cheap, which is why I thought the business was always better than it's animated cousin. Also, take someone that hardly buys any manga like me; I've only bought stuff on sale. I've never bought a 10$ book yet. A bunch of FMP and all of deathnote at megacon in two years and a couple of other books as well as a handful at borders with 20 or 30% coupons, so you might not save as much as you think.

It would never work for me. I have books that I bought from last year that I haven't even read yet. Don't think I would get around to reading some of them unless they really could catch my attention. Plus if I like it I would want to get it anyway.

This is what I've been doing for the past decade. It would be financially and spacially impossible to read thousands of volumes if I must buy them all.

I'd love it, if such a service was offered where I live; there's plenty of series I've bought but ended up selling immediately after finishing, renting would be a much cheaper alternative. Renting would mean I wouldn't have to drop series' either, if I don't like it enough to continue buying it, or don't know if it's going to get any better judging a first volume. As I like to re-read things, I'd buy whatever I really enjoyed anyway.

Don't they call this type of service a Library? Which is free?

I don't know which library you went to. But the copies and selection of Manga in libraries is so few it's ain even worth your time. Heck, they barely have every volume of popular shounen titles like Naruto and Bleach. Last edited by naruto fan 09812 on Wed Dec 12, 2007 3:26 pm; edited 1 time in total |

And short of really large libraries probably in major cities I'd be willing to wager the rest don't carry much, if any manga. Mine simply has donated volumes. So you might be able to get Bleach volume 2 and then volume 8. If that. Plus if this service works like Netflix does then there's also the issue of no late fees to consider. |

My library has never even heard of manga. Also, I personally don't think manga is cheap. It seems I'm alone on this, though. I even work at a bookstore and get a discount (and have for like the last 2 years), and I still think it is an expensive hobby. I suppose if you only read one or a few series that are short, it's cheap. But I buy at least 2 volumes a week, if not more. (It's probably more like 5, but I don't want to admit it) And since I'm going to be coming into much less money soon, I thought that I would try this out. A while ago the service was only like 10 of 15 bucks. But at 25 or 40??? I may as well buy them all. So, if the service were cheaper or free, absolutely. But not for that much, when I can buy 4+ for that price. And I much rather own items. There are the series like velocet said, where I drop them or sell them, and that would be beneficial, but in that case, I'll just read them in the store on my lunch break. |

Renting manga? Well, be sure to look out for odd looking "white" spots.
![]() ![]() However, the concept has been around since public libraries brought in manga to their collections. That should be a good 10-12 years now. Of course, in this case, it's "borrowing" instead of "renting"; but the basic principle is still there. As for this Internet rental thing -- always been skeptical about it even with DVDs. |

You are definitly not alone! I don't really have a problem paying $7-$10 a volume (which is why I usually stick with VIZ, I guess), but I really hate realizing that I have to pay around $20 ![]() As far as renting manga goes, I'd rather own the series; that way I can re-read it anytime I want, without having to wait for someone to return it. My library actually seems to have a pretty good selection! It's thanks to my library that I tried (and loved) Death Note and Hellsing! |
