Fruits Basket anime

I read a volume or two or the Fruits Basket manga back in the day, and I was really getting into it, but with college looming and other expenses I never continued reading it. Now seeing that the manga is over 20 volumes, I dont really want to spend that kind of money on it. I have noticed there is an anime version of it, however it is significantly shorter. So my question is this: if I get the anime version, will it still pull me in and have the same main story as the manga even though I'm missing out a lot?

The anime follows the manga through volume 7 (plus one subplot from volume 8) extremely closely, concluding at a pivotal point in Tohru's relationship with Kyo, plus a final episode completely unrelated to the manga that somewhat wraps things up as the anime only covers about a third of the manga. But it does leave alot of loose ends that will probably make it very difficult not to buy the manga. That's what happened to me, and I'm glad I'm following the manga, because the anime was only the tip of the iceberg. Name just about any character in the anime and their story only gets deeper and you care about them even more.
