REVIEW: The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Anime Series Review

This has always been my problem with 90% of these kinds of wish fulfillment characters/stories: a total lack of tension.

As a result, I totally fail to see how people enjoy these stories, but I probably am missing something...

I can’t speak to this, as I don’t watch a lot of these kinds of shows, but for me it’s because I like a lot of the characters and I can deal with a lack of tension if I like the characters. One reason I like this show above other shows, like Sword Art Online, is that the supporting cast are actually allowed to be talented and competent in the fight scenes and actively contribute to the plot of the series, instead of being just background accessories like in so many other shows. Personally though I do agree that this season is one of the weaker ones for this show specifically and that’s because the characters I like are pretty much completely shafted and get nothing to do until the final arc of the season. Still I’m invested enough to follow the show until the conclusion even if it is somewhat of a low priority for me.

I think that actually is present in SAO to an extent.

Kind of but, really though each arc only really lets 1 other character than Kirito do be it takes until the movie and Alicization for more than 1 other character per arc to be cool, whereas Leo, Erika, and Mikihiko get to be cool and competent from their introduction and continue to get cool fights and be competent in almost every arc with the only exception being the first 2 arcs of this season.
