For me personally, Gunbuster has probably the best ending ever.

I got to watch Gunbuster a few years back, and I'd go several steps further than Lynzee: Gunbuster isn't just a classic, it's an essential part of the canon. If you think of yourself as not just a fan of any particular genres, but of anime as an overall medium, then you need to see this. Not only did it put Anno on the map, but it was a huge influence on what came after it. You've almost certainly seen the "Gunbuster pose" dozens of times over, whether you knew what it was referencing or not. I'll agree that the runtime is too short for some of the emotional beats to be fully developed, but they're so big and visceral that it almost doesn't matter. I'm a bit surprised that Lynzee didn't mention the final episode of the series, which is intentionally animated in black-and-white and takes on something of the air of a historical documentary as a result. And yes, that ending is just...perfect.

Since the purpose of this series is your dive into anime titles you've wanted to watch I think a vote would take away from that personal aspect. Leave it a surprise.
A great and highly influential series. And as others have said one of the great endings of all time. |

Another vote here for Gunbuster having one of the all-time-great (if not THE all-time-great) anime endings. And really, the entire last episode is special.
I'd also vote for spoiler[Gunbuster finally emerging] in episode 4 as one of the most iconic non-ending scenes in all of anime. |

Gotta say that I totally disagree with your assessment of Gunbuster. If you realize that it's a space opera (which I always have) and watch it as such it becomes very engaging and entertaining.

I saw it just recently for the first time in maybe two decades. The fanservice is the only thing I don't like about it; the animation and design work is great, the colors in the Okinawa scenes really pop, the hard SF aspects are cool, and Haruhiko Mikimoto characters are always a pleasure to see. Also, having seen "Aim for the Ace!" now, I finally get why everything is so overblown at the beginning.

Gunbuster is one of the few that portrays properly Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity - how speed affects time and space relative to each other (time is not absolute, rather it's relative, kinda like how in the movie Inception time works
 )
Dunno if this is an epiphany or something, but (almost) all those waifu girls that everybody perves about every season, even on those ubiquitous isekai? They're high school age girls! So everybody's been doing it for decades now, so why change

Argumentum ad populum. Also you're not really asking for an explanation about why we should consider the motivations of centering full-nudity of (fictional) minors as culturally accepted? Because it's hardly a new argument. No real minors were used and I'm not calling for anyone to censor Gunbuster, but I do find it hard to accept that this was just how it was for grown-ass adults. I don't watch enough isekai to know what the median age is for its protagonists or its viewer demographic; afaik usually the characters are adults reincarnated into fantasy worlds and the heroines are similar ages as whatever body the protagonist resides in. Anyway "everyone has been perving on high school girls (characters) for decades, why should we stop?" with the emoji combo is giving the same grimy feeling I described, so thanks for that, Mr. Mcconaughey. To me watching Gunbuster is a very intimate experience. I cannot recommend it to everyone because it is a very specific kind of show that not everyone will like. That being said, Gunbuster is a classic anime.

Clearly the reviewer should not be criticized for letting people know that if they have a moral objection to viewing teen bodies then Gunbuster isn't the show for them.
Incidentally Gunbuster was a very nationalistic show, and nationalism is to one degree or another a recurring theme in many of in Hideaki Anno's works. With all the grief that Mahouka gets, and that Attack On Titan got despite the author repeatedly denying any any intent, it is curious that this aspect of his works is usually overlooked. His later output i.e. Rebuild of Evangelion significantly dialed down the fanservice, but Shin Godzilla showed that he is still every bit the nationalist. |
