Too bad, it was still written as 1 season of 20 consecutive eps until this morning on several sites I go to, see you next year little Belle.

Hopefully Season 2 will explain what the heck is going on.

I'm assuming this is your classic "planned two-cour split into two seasons."

I couldn't quite get through the Three Episode Test so I skipped from Ep2 to Ep6 and it wasn't getting "better" so I'd say "no" to your first rhetorical question. It continued on it's insufferably self-important and obtuse trajectory and if you didn't get interested or like it at Ep2 or Ep3 I doubt you ever would.

To your second question, I wonder based on the comments in the Forum if anyone other than the one person in four who liked it or the other person in four who dropped it gave it enough views to really qualify for a second cour if it weren't set up that way from the start...

AL/MAL/Anidb had it listed at 10 or undetermined until a about a week ago, when the WOWOW schedule updated to show 10 as the final episode and the BD listings only had 2 volumes of 5 episodes each.

Seems unlikely.

Latest ep was a massive exposition dump and I'm still mostly none the wiser.

Honestly kind've baffling, given how incoherent (as basically everyone has commented on) season 1 has been. I wonder if the source material is stronger, and it's just the adaptation that's tough to follow? It seems to kind of have a potentially interesting underlying world, but the storytelling is just so poorly executed..

Sort've reminds me of The Fire Hunter, except there I at least mostly figure out what was going on.

I tried to like the show. I really did. But I gave up after 5 episodes.

I'm honestly not sure if they're aiming for a dream-like incoherence or if it's simply supposed to be a bit mysterious. If we're supposed to also feel Belle's sense of being out of place. Or even if the writers think this all makes sense... Whichever it is, it's failing I think because the audience ends up just feeling lost.

And there's a bunch of interesting ideas kicking about (some of which the show probably thinks are more profound than they really are). The music and performance metaphors have potential but probably don't quite come off. Maybe it works better if you have an education in classical music theory, and have a better grasp than I do of how "themes" and "motifs" are constructed and used in a score? Or maybe it's even more incoherent if you do?

I've found the jargon bukkake and overwrought histrionics looped back around to pretty good, but it's earning a lot of slack just by being different. Pretty much impossible to recommend, since you either click with it or don't. It's the Southland Tales of anime.

Two cours was probably the plan all along, since Bye Bye, Earth is one long novel in either two or four volumes, depending on the edition. There's no reasonable stopping point short of the ending.

It's definitely easier to follow in print, partly because it offers more explanations and partly because you have kanji to go with the jargon. Ubukata has said that he went overboard trying to make his first fantasy world feel genuinely strange, and that was definitely a double-edged sword.

It's not a situation like The Fire Hunter, insofar as that show cut huge, important chunks of the source material, basically maximizing jargon and exposition at the expense of character, and then significantly changed the ending. Bye Bye, Earth so far has been a faithful adaptation of about the first 40% of the novel. What you miss is more breathing room for events, some interstitial bits, and a lot of time in Belle's head (which in some ways is the core of the book).

One of the hardest-to-grasp and follow TV shows of the decade and half the plot still remains. Some of this can be attributed to first-time author syndrome but nothing stopped the studio from ironing out at least some of the kinks. Don´t release a 1000-page door stopper as your very first work. Half of that doesn´t need to be printed if this is your first try but Ubukata is most obsessed with world-building and minutia to this day.

The soundtrack is good but is a bit out of place at times.

Episode 2, my mistake.
