I just saw Mardock Scramble the First Compression the other day and I had an idea, Shell's blue diamonds are made from the remains of his "lovers" which nearly gets Rune Balot killed and I recalled that the process for making diamonds involves the compression of carbon, heat (combustion) both are which are titles in the series. So the titles are referring tho the creation of diamonds. Thoughts opinions, anyone?

The movie titles are mirroring the subtitles of the novels which are named after the stages of the internal combustion engine. The chapter titles further break this down:
The First Compression
Intake
Mixture
Crank-up
Spark
The Second Combustion
Piston
Injection
Rotor
Explosion
The Third Exhaust
Crank Shaft
Manifold
Connecting Rod
Navigation

Yeah, it's the stages and parts of an internal combustion engine (a piston, for example, is a part, not a stage).
Intake, compression, combustion (power), exhaust.

I watched this last night and was fairly impressed. The story progression based on an IC engine cycle is a fairly unique idea, but I don't see what it has really to do with the story -- at least so far.
The story is a bit appalling in that all the characters except for the bio-enhanced mouse have utterly no empathy for Rune. A fifteen year old girl, raped by her father at age 12, fell into a life of hustling until she meets the guy who gasses her and blows her up. She is just useful in a court case and meets the legal requirements somehow because of how her subconscious responded. Nobody speaks up for her (except one weak objection) when the defense counsel badgers her like it was all her fault.
I have never been a big fan of statutory rape laws -- at least how they are implemented in most countries these days -- but you can see in this story how much worse off we would be if they didn't exist.
The main flaw in the story is that she acquires the power to defend herself way too suddenly. It takes about two minutes of screen time and she is converted from helpless little girl to superhuman killing cyborg. Yet with what she has been through, it is no surprise that she "goes rogue" when she realizes she doesn't have to just lie back and take it.
I can't say why, but I think most people will end up caring enough about her to watch the next installment.

I've been reading the novel and I find it a lot better than the adaptation. I'm surprised they crammed The First Combustion it into a single hour. Even the training scene was cut short where she was trained into being able to balance herself properly and shift her body into any position without tilting the scale. Maybe it's my reading pace, but I feel like they cut corners on this... I also think there were some flashbacks in the novel into Balot's past that didn't make it into the movie.
Also, I think the dvd is censored... The next installment, from whatt I read is weird as hell, but also good, hacking into top secret files tsk tsk... no turning back now miss Balot, you're a wanted ladeh.
