Well, after 3 or 4 years of debuting this an ime in Japan, at last, Geneon licensed this doll and German inspired anime...
Rozen Maiden is a mahou shoujo anime!!! For sure, it's not your typical girly anime... (Trust me, it's way better than Magical Do-Re-Mi)!!!
This anime stars dolls with mystical and powerful magic... No wonder it's an eye catcher just by looking at the drawings of the elegantly designed dolls! (Hahaha, i like them all except Shinku which I blame for Suigintou's behaviour!)
If you're looking for cuteness, well, it's anime loaded with KAWAIINESS from the scenes to the characters! And besides cuteness, it showcase the battles using their own unique power to become the perfect girl! Also, you will like how the doll's costume was made because it's a bit Goth/Lolita/Victorian-themed
[OT] I really missssssssssssssssssssssss ANN! I just got back from my school vacation! And I wanna say thanks to Jetz for updating me with the happenings here!

The soundtrack is amazing. This anime is amazing, and I will defonatly be buying it.
Gaaaaaah is it wierd that I am in favour of a ShinkuXJun pairing? I always wanted them to be a couple. Even though... she's a doll. >_>

The Soundtrack easily conveys the mood of particular scenes. Without it, this series would have been deemed ordinary.

You sick and twisted individual. Everyone knows he's better paired with Suiseiseki desu.

Well, if Shinku could win the Alice Game, she'd become a real girl, but then all the others would be lifeless dolls. She could be with Jun if that happened.
I wish Geneon would hurry up and license the OVA. That flashback to Suigintou's past is awesome. Seeing how she started out, it really makes her actions more understandable and it helps to make her even more of a rounded character.
Of course, right now I'd settle for The Right Stuf shipping out my copy of the volume 1 with artbox! It's way behind time I got this people!

Personally, I couldn't get into the series and ended up giving it a Not Really Good (C+). I liked the artwork and characters to a degree within the gothic-esque atmosphere, but the series did too much flip-flopping between comedy relief and dramatic action. I'm hesitant to check out Träumend unless someone can tell me that it goes beyond that same formula. I also liked the character revelation Jun had at the end, but they sure took their time writing it out. Aside from the pacing, though, it's just short of being buyable for me.
Anyone care to try and enlighten me?

Naw, if you didn't like the first season you wont like the second either. They are fairly the same atmosphere and mood wise.
Actually, the flip flopping from comedy to seriousness was what I found made the show so endearing. I loved its comedic points, especially the food fight episode, and I got completly wrapped up in the dramatic points, especially when Jun went and got Shinkus arm.

Well, comedy and drama mixing doesn't really bother me so much as a trend. I just think it was really out of place for a 12 episode span. I actually did like the comedy and drama when they were by themselves, but it feels like the series loses focus and doesn't really present itself as one genre or the other (sort of like D.Gray-man at this point, but I think the whole Noah Clan/Millennium Plan still has some great potential, I just wish they'd get to it already...).
Oh well, thanks for the heads up.

I honestly had no problems with the back and forth drama and comedy, as I thought the characters lent themselves well to both (especially Jun and Shinku). Part of it is pretty serious, as the show deals with difficult decisions between family and duty, as well as mental illnesses such as inferiority complexes or hikikomori/personal trauma. But then the series has to break the seriousness by reminding you that you're really just watching an anime about dolls. I actually found this bizarre juxtaposition quite amusing. As Tony K. has stated already, both the drama and comedy are rather nicely done. It's just that I don't personally mind when a show does both. At least the episodes are usually devoted to only one or the other.
The opening songs for both the first and second season don't rank terribly high on my list, as I only really liked maybe 15 seconds worth of each melody total. But I loved the end theme for Traumend, as well as the OP for the OVA. The background music for the series is pretty nice, as I'm a fan of classical instrumental music. As someone once said, the show's music oftentimes sounds like you're listening to an antique music box, which fits the show nicely.
One of the biggest reasons why I really enjoyed Rozen Maiden was for the fantastic voice acting job. Rie Tanaka was simply brilliant as Suigintou, I love her evil laugh, and she did a great job sounding menacing when necessary, and endearing and heartfelt at other times (mostly in parts of Traumend and the OVA). All the other characters had solid performances too. I also especially liked Shinku, who was able to sound haughty and aristocratic yet sweet and adorable at the same time. I haven't had a chance to check out the dubbing job yet, but I'm really worried about it. And I'm really going to miss each doll's unique speech habits that won't be translated over (desu, nano, dawa, kashira, boku, etc.).
BTW, is this anime really shoujo? I've also heard it called both seinen and shounen.

Yes, I have to say I did enjoy this series, but not nearly as much as my mom did. She really got into it which is surprising considering she isn't one who is really interested in anime. She's even thrown some away...but that is another story. It must have been her love of dolls that drew her to it.

Couldn't argue with you here Kyuu!
I like Suiseiseki desudesu chan to be paired with Jun-kun!!! But reality wise, I also want to give a shot of Tomoe-Jun team-up!!!
About the songs, gosh, I like the openings... All those songs were sung by Ali Project!!! And also, can't wait to have the soundtrack!!! I like the anime's music because of the gothicy-classical feel of the songs... It's really not the ordinary cutesy music that Japan would normally do in this kind of anime... Also, I think it has its own definition of a genre... It's not Jpop or Jrock! HAHAHAHA!!!

I just watched the first DVD and thought that the OP song was almost identical to their Avenger song! I went into this series blindly and am not sure what to make of it. There seems to be an insane number of super powered girl teaming up with goofy teenager boy (whose perspective we follow) series being released. While I am enjoying both Shana and Fate/Stay (where the boy also provides the energy for the girl!) I am getting a bit tired of this "Bleach" type formula.
There is also the contest aspect which reminds me of a ton of shows like Law of Ueki and Zatch Bell (as well as Fate/Stay once again) which seems to be prevalent in current releases.
As mentioned on another thread (and Tony) the drama being punctuated by cheesy humor doesn't work for me. The transfer for Geneon's release (lack of extras aside) on the other hand looks even better than their Shana and Fate/Stay releases, so I will continue collecting the series for the time being.

That's rather ironic, considering that the girls in Bleach do almost nothing after the first few episodes. The vast majority of the fights there feature only the guys fighting. Which is the exact opposite of Rozen Maiden.
But really, the fights weren't anywhere near my favorite parts of Rozen Maiden. I thought the best thing about it was the character development and such for characters like Jun. The first season, at the very least, may be said to have more to do with the characters growing as people rather than advancing the "contest" of the Alice Game. And even with the Alice Game, the show doesn't quite follow standard conventions for carrying out the "contest", I'd say.

Rozen Maiden was great. And then it ended.
That is one of the major problems with series from continuing(-ish) manga. They often get really bad endings that are really unsatisfying. Rozen Maiden gives you a lot of questions in the last episode, and then answers almost none of them.

Good point. I suppose I should narrow my definition a bit and refer to it as "Boy Battery" formula like Shana and Fate/Stay Night. I do understand that these things can be superficial and recently argued the other side of this debate in the Eva and RahXephon thread. Indeed, the characters are what make a series watchable or not regardless of the premise. While I'm not overly impressed by the first DVD of Rozen, I will continue following it for now. I just find the overwhelming number of shows following this premise a bit annoying.
