I went and watched the OAV's for this in preparation. They felt much closer to the dumb goofy violent fun of Eden than the "fix the girls" of Fruit or "tragic backstory max combo" of Labyrinth, which I'm hoping holds up in the TV series. It even moved "male lead" off to the side out of the protagonist role.

Your words to God's ears. Or your post to the anime gods' digital screen, or whatever

Digital Anime God is in fact a lonely girl who was dying of a disease but then was digitized into the internet as part of an evil conspiracy. Who makes an appearance here as Thanatos.

I thought you were talking about Serial Experiment Lain for a moment there, and I was all in, though I think I'd prefer an anime pantheon. A god of near lethal colds. A god of hot springs. A god of Ramen. A god of firework festivals...
Anyway, show's today and soon. Fingers crossed. |

Aaaaand episode 1.
This show does not start mid-accidentally-putting-bullets-in-brains, so it's taking a more relaxed pace, which (sadly, in my opinion) puts it a bit closer to the fix-the-girls stuff of Fruit. This is Chris's arc, so I guess it's fitting it's a bit less balls-to-the-wall, given her character, which leaves some hope that it'll pick up on the zaniness later on. But overall, I'm not loving it. |

Well, for my part, I have no idea what the #$#& was going on with that intro where they basically alluded to an entire season's worth of events that I've never seen before. I seem to recall that the original was based on one of those multiple choice visual novel games that I don't think ever made it into the U.S.A...if that's what's going on here, why didn't they just adapt the source material like the original did instead of using it as a spring board? Or even if they wanted to just go with it, they didn't have to include that synopsis at all. They could have just started with the new storyline and alluded to the background info here and there as they went, making it seem like a mystery being pieced together instead of an irritating case where I'm supposed to care about people whose characters were built in a half-assed summary.
(Ahem). |

They did adapt the source material, but it came out in a some OAV/movies from a few years ago, which are summarized in the 2-minute preview.. If you can find them, they do a much better job of introducing the characters (and make clear that the mysteries or backstories or secret organizations don't really matter much, they're just an excuse for goofy things to happen).
But on its own, it's not much of an intro. |

Yeah, while I am interested after the first episode, it left me feeling a little confused. On the other hand, the show reminds me of Blue Archive in that most things are kind of nonsense and taking any of it too seriously is not really necessary for the experience. A group of cute girls performing murder for the good of the world is probably all you need to know to have a fun time.

Well, I didn't mind that. I liked the interplay between the girls. My instinct is that if I watched this to the end, I doubt I'd rate it higher than 6/10 (Decent) which, if I was being tough, would make this a Drop, but I had enough fun I'm willing to invest some more time. Beheneko is almost certainly a Drop for me at some point, but this one is not so clear-cut so far.

That was an exciting second episode. I particularly like that the girls are in fact not overpowered spies who are never in any danger. Chris succeeded in saving Taiga but despite taking out a few of the cultists she was taken down herself pretty damn fast. Taiga did also not suddenly turn into some super spy to salvage the situation. Finally, the show is a fair bit more grim/brutal than I expected, that goes for the body count (those cultists went wild) but also the harsh world of spies.

Episode 2
Well, I liked that. I'm still not at the point where I can confidently predict I will be here for the long haul, but the signs are encouraging. It feels like it's been a while since I've watched a Girls with Guns (and Explosives) show so maybe I'm just really primed for content like this. |

I'm intrested in how well will the production quality turn out...I've been keeping my eyes on bibury for a while and I think they’ve managed to reach a certain level of consistency also i like theyve put focus on growing jn house staff...my guess is there will be some flashy action shots here and there the rest of the show will be quite standard in terms of production

Three episodes in and it still looks good. The action is animated well enough and is exciting plus there are some rather nice/atmospheric looking shots. I like that all the characters know that they are doing effed up work and while acting alouf/jokey about it some do show reflection on how messed up it is. That goes particularly for the whole terrorist thing possibly being a convoluted operation to take Taiga out.
Gotta use those grenades correctly though. |

Episode 3
Welp, this has cleared the 3 episode test for me... I'm still here and still willing to try more. But heartless bastard that I am, still not ready to declare this a keeper. It would certainly help push me in that direction if the chick with the big tiddies would show a bit more skin... and judging by the preview, I may get my wish...[/u] |
