Escaflowne and Silent Mobius are pretty good.
I like the Escaflowne anime but I haven't gotten a chance to check out the Silent Mobius anime. But the Mangas are from what I've noticed uber cool.

Everyone's opinions of a certain series is relative. Try reading a few reviews online of those titles (there're plenty out there) and see if you can find points of the series in question that would attract you to them.

Silent Mobius, Escaflowne and Boogiepop are three very different shows, and as Bamboo has said, everything is subjective. They've all received a lot of critical acclaim as being among the best in their particular genres. Boogiepop has received the most Critical Acclaim, while the other are more popular with fans (interesting note, Escaflowne is much more popular Internationally than it is in Japan).
Angel Links is a gain a different grenre. But it hasn't been nearly as well received. But, there are people that like it. Still, in it's category there are probably other shows that you'd enjoy more; shows like Outlaw Star (which Angel Links is a spinoff of).
But most importantly, everything is subjective. Without knowing your tastes, it's nto possible to recommend anyone of those over the others.

Wait, you live in Tucson? Now I'm worried about whether or not I know you from anywhere. Eep.
Anyway. Escaflowne all the way. Slick, well-directed, wonderfully-animated, and all-around fun to watch. Boogiepop Phantom is neat if you're looking for something neat and unusual. I don't care much for the rest.

These titles all are different. My favorite is Boogiepop, but it is also the title which is the least "typical" of the batch, but since you like Lain you might want to check it out. Escaflowne is a wonderful series which is widely accepted amongst fans, and based off of what you like it would seem the most likely of the four, although it does have robots. I also enjoyed Outlaw Star but was rather let down by Angel Links. If you like Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Blue Gender type tough guy in wierd SF setting show without giant robots, you might want to check out Heat Guy J.

out of the ones you are considering, my fav. is Escaflowne, though I have never seen Angel Links...and though Escaflowne has robots, I wouldnt really call it a robot sereis...the story revolves around them, but it not so much focused on them...I think it has many more elements than the other shows, though I think all the shows are very good. I've seen the boxset for around $150...
From what I have seen of Silent Mobius, I only have the first 2 vol., its a good story and might immediately draw you in but you can lose interest in it since I feel that it does not do a good job at holding your interest...afterall, I still haven't picked up the last vol. and I bought vol. 2 about 6 months ago...you ccan prolly find all three vols. for around $90 total...
Boogiepop is the most different of the three and doesnt really draw you in as it will confuse you at first, though it is well worth checking out for the story itself and the way it is told...I think the plain boxset runs around $50...

Boogiepop creeps me out so much that I will not watch it. I leave the room when my friends watch it, it just hits a nerve in me.

All three of those are okay. But in terms of production value, Escaflowne has the greatest. The animation is excellent throughout the entire series. If not for the GIANT eyes of the characters, I would've liked it :/
