We have totally different definitions regarding the word "revealing", Japan. Showing the lower portion of your back is not exactly revealing anything to me other than you have a spinal cord.

As much as I enjoyed this show I've grown increasingly weary of how they're slowly reducing it down to another pandering-type show through the merch and bonus material. I have nothing against those kind of 'pandering' shows (and even hesitate to call them that because of the negative associations with the word, but dont know what else to call them) and actually enjoy a few of them, I just originally liked this show so much because that's -not- what it was, and wished it had stayed as something distinct from that. I dunno, it used to feel like something made for adults and now it just feels like another show made for teenagers with the usual 'made for teenagers' merch/illustrations. I feel like the only person who feels sad about it - everyone else in the fandom seems to go into an frothing fit in response to any of it, and so thats the direction they continue to drive it to (and to what seems like an increasingly younger fanbase). It was inevitable, and I can't help feeling selfish to be miffed about it because it's not my show.
(I also can't help feeling selfish because I'm genuinely happy for the creators that it was this big a success. it's just...I dunno. Hardly any anime gets made with adults in mind anymore that I cant help being a lil salty and I admittedly dont have high hopes for a potential second season if this is the direction its going and am actually dreading it being all bait and no substance solely because that kind of thing has proven to sell time and time again with the audience they're marketing most aggressively to now.)

I hope I didn't offend anyone who enjoys all this but I just wanted to get it off my chest.

...that and I cant help raising my eyebrows at the Yurio one, he's 15, seems pretty gross.

I get what you feel to a certain extent. The divide you have to make is where you make it. You can draw the line strictly to the medium and only consume by buying the BR release or streaming it multiple times. You can dig it deeper into the merch by buying tasteful figures or maybe a keychain or custom decal. Or you can go full fujoshi and buy the "Revealing Yuri" cover and cuddle with your body pillow husbando.

I guess the point is to draw that line and accept that other people may draw it deeper into the fandom, and that's okay. Enjoy the series how you want to enjoy it, and enjoy the fact others can do the same without it effecting your personal experience.

Not criticizing you; genuinely offering you a perspective so you continue to love series for how you love them. c:

@championferret: Although I understand what you mean, I honestly think you shouldn't let the merchandise tamper your feelings for the actual series. I think with the industry as is, this kind of merchandise is practically inevitable but it's not really something that reflects the spirit of the show. Remember even Yurikuma Arashi had hug pillows, and those were a lot racier than these. I'd reccommend to look up Sayo Yamamoto and Kubo's interviews on the series, I feel their intentions for it continue to be the same as they were before the explosive success are pretty evident, and I think it's telling in the kind of artwork Yamamoto and Kubo commission for the official media -like the cover of volume 6 or the Animestyle cover- so I hope your love for the series won't be obstructed by a certain type of merchandise

Jeez, what's with all the horizontal stripes? Very Happy Victor's a cutie in his poses but those pants are just butt-ugly (npi).

I feel a little of what championferret is talking about, but I've never been one to let the shenanigans of a fandom affect how I feel about the franchise itself. It does make it a little harder to spread the love to the uninitiated though, if they've been exposed to all the hype and merch first and that's not their thing.

I see your point. I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan (which you can probably tell from my icon lol) and I'm kinda annoyed at all the merch being pumped out for it. I mean everything from tea cups to mountains of figurines to tampons (yes, Sailor Moon tampons really exist for some reason). But at the same time I'm happy because it means that 20 years later it's still crazy popular. Plus all the merch means the series will get more promo and exposure. And that also goes for yuri on ice. So look at that as being a bright side.

I'm actually not a huge fan of Viktor, but I think his pajama/lounge outfit is cute and he's adorable in the picture. Yuuri, though~. ♥

The show itself doesn't pander, it tells a story.
On the other hand the merch is always a different thing, Japanese merchs are always pandering because they can squeeze money out of it, every anime panders through merchandise and bonus materials. I actually like the way it was marketed, good businessmen targets the most active type of consumers, and they know their customers very well. I agree with Yurio , he's only 15 but have you seen that Welcome to the madness clip? It's even more savvy than the sexualized Digimon characters who're all wearing bikinis in a xmas magazine issue.
