Would you consider buying Classic Romance Shoujo if released on dvd in the US?

For example:

Sequence
Christmas in January

Shoujo seems to be the genre of choice for fans and companies at the moment especially from Funimation and Media Blasters. Therefore i was curious to see if anyone else had an appreciatioon for some of the Romance Shoujo classics.

I've been watching a lot of shoujo recently so yes, I'd consider buying up some older titles. However like with any other title if it's good I'd continue purchasing more or just drop it completely if it's bad.

Classic shoujo of any kind (romance, historical, mahou shoujo, etc.) is always on my buy list. Although looking at the dates of the two you suggested, we seem to have different ideas of classic shoujo. My mind was heading for Rose of Versailles, Candy Candy, and Brother, Dear Brother not stuff that's the same age as Sailor Moon. But the early 1990s (and the mid-1990s...well, just the 1990s in general) is the time period of almost all my favorite shoujo anime as it is. So if that's what you're considering classic, then yes, I would buy it if more were available.

I would be in heaven if more of the classic and 90s shoujo anime (romance or otherwise, although most of the shoujo I've seen has at least some romance to it) were released in the U.S. The classics I listed above, Miracle Girls, Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, Magical Angel Creamy Mami... There are a lot of titles I'd be quite willing to pick up if they were to head over.

When i wrote the question i did have the 80's in mind, i guess i should have put more examples down.

Seeing some 70's shoujo released would be awesome if not somewhat unrealistic at this point in time. In particular a release of Ace Wo Nerae would be a dream come true but apart from being very old, is a sports show which do notoriously bad in the US.

I guess Roses of Versailles still has a good chance of geting picked up though, both Animeigo and ADV have expressed interest in licensing it in the past.

Since tv series are costly, i was hoping companies would contemplate picking up the odd OVA or Movie since they are cheaper and self contained.

The only older shoujo shows i can think of which has been released in the US are Video Girl Ai, Weathering Continent, Here is Greenwood, Earthian, RG Veda and Sailor Moon. Hardly much of a selection.

Don't forget Please Save My Earth, Toward the Terra, They Were 11, Tokyo Babylon....

I would definitely buy some classic shojo, and I honestly like buying pre-90s anime in general. I've been watching the recent Mermaid Forest TV series, and all it's making me do is want to watch the (in my opinion) far superior Rumic World OAVs (Mermaid Forest, Mermaid's Scar, Fire Tripper, Laughing Target, and Maris The Chojo), none of which, to my knowledge, have been released on DVD.

I like that idea as well. I'm a lot faster to drop cash on an unknown anime if it's a one-shot purchase than a big series (I do a lot of Netflix renting). I'm currently wavering over Yawara. I haven't seen even an instant of it, but it's a classic so I feel like I should get it immediately (and probably pre-order when that option is available), but there's the fear thta I'll end up disliking it. OAVs and movies help avoid that problem. If I dislike it, I'm out one DVD, and I can probably recoup some of my losses by selling it at a use DVD store or giving it to a friend as a present.

I'll buy anything if the art and plot catch me. Plenty of good titles have been mentioned, it's sad that this is all so much hopeful dreaming though.

In general, I wish the licensing companies would put out more OVAs and movies, as there are plenty of great ones out there just waiting to be had. Many popular creators names are on them too.

*puts on crotchety old man hat* Why back in my day (the mid-90s), all that the anime companies would release were movies and OAV series. It was considered hugely controversial when ADV started licensing 26-ep TV series like Blue Seed and EVA, which it was not thought the VHS market could support--the only anime TV series brought over at that point were either edited for television (Star Blazers, Robotech, Voltron, etc.) or Rumiko Takahashi series (Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura).

I personally LOVE the OAV format. Most of my favorite anime series from that era were OAVs: Macross Plus, Giant Robo, Devil Hunter Yohko, the Ranma 1/2 OAVs, Tenchi-Muyo....the list goes on. I know American licensors are loathe to license OAVs, but are they really still be made in Japan, other than hentai or continuations of series that were already on TV?

There are still some being made. Recent examples would be Le Portrait de Petite Cossette and the Animation Runner Kuromi series. (All great in my opinion.)

Most of it is hentai or series continuations, but there are still some good things coming out in the OVA format. I think Voices of a Distant Star was extremely impressive, although it really needed to be longer and more indepth. There's also the remake of Hellsing, although I suppose you could view that in an entirely different way than the typical OVA.

I wish more series would have OVA extra episodes and sequel/prequels. They are badly needed sometimes. (Nothing is worse than an cliffhanger ending for a show that NEVER continues.)
