Or: When The Main Charatcer is Good But The Supporting Characters Suck.
Both sum up the opposite to the rule in both cases: Great anime are made by crap studio (Gonzo), and at least on supporting character is more interesting than the main character (too many examples to count, most anime). I just finished KS after a few years of leaving the series during the time it was being subbed by very slowly, and the story was moving in a crappy direction (Karlos deposed arc). The fact is, this anime ONLY shines when Sora is center stage showing her skill. At all other times, it's boring as sin. The secondary characters ALL suck to various degrees. No matter how much the series was determined to shove these losers down my throat, I could never be brought to care at all about them. All they did was drag out the seires and waste time. Even Sora's male partners ended up being a waste of time. The last arc (tenshi waza) was GREAT, but marred by Mai Wong -- an INSANELY annoying character. STFU and know your place. But what made her annoying wasn't the character but how Sora and everyone elese actually took her so damn seriously. So in closing: high budget, good story, good character designer and director = win. Japan, stop sucking and produce more KS. Now. |

Actually, in every shows there are characters that sux..but that depends, because people look at it in different way.
There are some characters I don't like, for example; From NAruto, I don't like HAruno Sakura, because she always ruin everything!!!! But I a lot of people like her, and I respect that is cool!!!

Almost every anime ever made has a secondary character who is more interesting than the main character.
Take Naruto for example: it is generally accepted that Lee >>>> Naruto. Practially three-quarters of the cast is >>> Naruto. KS is like making Lee the main character, and changing the name of the series from "Naruto" to "Lee". |

Since when is Gonzo a crap studio? They've been involved with some of the most popular titles to come out in the past decade.
How can the studio that brought us Gankutsuou and Last Exile be crappy? Sounds like somebody is holding petty grudge. Emerje |

Well, see that's because both Gankutsuou and LE are...crap.
Gonzo is a crap studio. Literally the only place on the internet that doesn't understand that is this forum, probably due to the ratio of anime newbies. |

Apparently being anime newbies make us ignorant, foolish, and *obviously* fails to understand that Gonzo is *obviously* a crap studio.

I loved the first season of Kaleido Star, but New Wings just gets worse and worse. Sometimes when I'm watching it I feel like I'm watching Evangelion. Sora just goes around feeling sorry for herself. I half expected her to take out a gun and just end it. I've watched through Volume 4 so far and I haven't been impressed. And yes, it is boring. It's like you're watching almost 20 episodes of a Sora that isn't Sora. It's finally come to a turning point, but it took too long in getting there. The thing I liked about Sora in the first place was her never say die attitude. But I feel she died at the end of the first season. May is a horrible character. I mean, if you're going to put someone up against Sora, make her at least have ONE good quality.

Gonzo sucks for these reasons:
1. Mass production model: anime are turned out with factory assembly-like efficiency -- and attention to detail. 2. Formula production: choose a gimmick and plug it into a generic forumula designed for young-mid teens in the most artificial and unartistic manner concievable. 3. Obnoxious CG: "famous" for garish primary-color CG effects, which is cheaper than real animation. 4. Incompetant staff: lame scripts, uneven production values that tend to the lower end of the spectrum, poor to mediocre technical production etc. Bascially, outside of this site (and perhaps animesuki as they are kind of newb-ridden), Gonzo is synomanous with low-quality cookie-cutter shovelware that exists to market cheap merchendise to teenagers. |
