REVIEW: Boys Be... DVD 1

Couldn't agree more! I was a little wary of this title, as I wasn't particularly wow-ed by the manga, but I figured Right Stuf had never steered me wrong before so I gave it a go. The show is a very real, honest look at high school romance, and it's a series that's very easy to fall in love with.

I need to pick up the next two volumes ASAP....

Yes, I agree. Right Stuff has always been about quality and not quantity. They sure picked a winner with Boys Be. It's nice to watch a show that's about regular people who don't have magical powers or are charged with saving the world. Hmmm, I guess I just described "slice of life" didn't I?

I'm loving this show so far and can't wait to see vol 2 & 3. So much anime to watch, so little time.

Oh, one thing I couldn't help notice: No sub or dub grades?

Personally I can't understand how the reviewer could give an A for the story. I thought the first half of the series was just a bunch of silly boy's fantasies. Second half was more realistic but still left me underwhelmed. The last OAV episode was another silly boy's fantasy but rose above mediocrity through a bravura performance by "guest star" Megumi Hayashibara. That really opened up my eyes to the fact that the Japanese seiyuus were not up to snuff. Perhaps the high rating was due to the English dub, for once, trouncing the original Japanese dub.

I did check out the first episode on fansubs awhile back, but I didn't bother getting more. Even though it attempted to be a realistic, slice-of-life romance type of thing, it felt like your everyday bishoujo romance type of thing. Then I check out the dub soundbytes in the official website, and it sounded the English VAs were able to play off each other extremely well; the dialouge felt realistic. I guess I'll consider buying this when I scrap enough cash. Rolling Eyes

And did anyone noticed that even though the show is dubbed by Headline Sound Studios, most of the VAs are your New Generation Pictures regulars? I wonder how RightStuf pulled that off.

I don't know how they pulled it off, but they've used a lot of these VAs before. I recognized quite a few of them from "Comic Party."

Yeah, because ComiPa is done by Right Stuf themselves...

I already got DVD 1 + Box and DVD 2 of Boys Be, can't wait until all 4 come out to watch it, the anime appeals to me, or so what it seems, Romantic Comedy types...

I second that. I seen it some time ago on AXN-Asia and loved it. Heck, I'm sure if I dig around for it, I'll find a VHS copy of it, but from what I seen/heard of it on the Newtype sampler DVD, the dub is not half bad. The slow pace of the series is, IMO, the charm of the series. Sure the Love Hina fans out there won't love it, but if Boys Be had that type of face pace, it'll be another love comedy on the pile.
