...and by classical, I mean traditional. What was going on musically in Japan durring (and before) the Baroque, classical, romantic, rennaissance, etc. periods in the west?
What is their music like? I'm guessing that its based off of a totally different scale/chord structure than ours is here (the west). And does anybody know of some composers who I should check out? Thanks |

Now that's an interesting question. I don't know a whole lot about Japanese music history except that kabuki started to become popular during the Romantic period, Western instruments didn't take off until the Meiji Restoration, and Okinawa's been doing its own thing for a long time--even used different scales.
Off the top of my head, the only classical composer I can think of who happens to be Japanese is Toru Takemitsu. But now I'm curious...gotta look into this some more. |

well Tokugawa and Heien Era times of emporors and war lords fuedal JApan I guess Heien era Gagaku our court music was popular and traditional instruments such as Shamisen, Fue, Yoko Bue (Flutes) Shakuhachi( another type of bamboo flute) Taiko was more of a tool used to tell the times and for warnings so were were bells.
