I have to admit, I was curious about Boys Over Flowers after seeing so many people rave over it but after hearing about that particular plot point I decided to skip it, it just didn't seem like something I would enjoy, glad to see I'm not the only one since I've seen so few people mention that detail.

As for shows I'm following/not following this season, I plan to follow Chihaya Furu, Guilty Crown, Last Exile, Future Diary, Squid Girl, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi and UN-GO. Tried out Phi Brain and Tamayura but neither of them really grabbed me so for the moment I've dropped them. Oh and continuing with Penguindrum still because it's such and insane show that I can't help but love it.

Ah, art books and guide books. I'm still waiting for the Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex Official Log 2 to be released in North America. Me thinks it will be a very long wait. Sad, though, considering how there was a great deal of effort put into the Log 1 release to produce a very nice product. Just hate not having the full episode guide. Still, I can treasure my Log 1.

I have actually noticed this a LOT in a lot of various animes, where someone does something wrong and then is NEVER called out on it or punished for it.
This is one of the more extreme cases I have heard of, but I see it everywhere. Prime example, Iv just watched the first two episodes of Chihayafuru, and spoiler[the one guy cheats to win the tournament by stealing the main characters glasses. This is never addressed beyond an embarased "sorry", he was not caught, he was not punished.]
I dont want to make any assumptions about Japanese culture based on their cartoons by any means, but the number of times Iv seen this happen where nobody does shit to punish someone and we roll credits to an "alls well that ends well" vibe makes me wonder. IS this some inherent Japanese thing about not putting your nose in someone elses business?

And that isnt even touching on the entire subject of how anime tends to protray female sexuality. DO they seriously not think that rape is a big deal?

So, I am officially a Bad Person because this season's crop of shows has come out, and I haven't seen a single one of them yet.

Hey, I'm right there with you. The only thing I've watched so far is one episode of Shana. Too much baseball. And football. And the Jets are back in Winnipeg!

Anyway, I once paid a princely sum for an Kanon Artbook (it was like 40 bucks or something). I bought it because it was a rare, unique item from a series I loved. The funny thing is that if someone stateside reprinted it in English and sold it for 20 bucks a pop, I'd still want the Japanese version. It's not the price that matters, but the authenticity, I guess. In other words, I'm not as interested in the mythology of anime as the collectivity, and so I'm fine with displaying a book in a language I can barely read.

Yeah, Rape Thread!
This one same thing that always bothered me in Hell Girl (well, lots of things about Hell Girl bothered me), but the thing that bothered me most is why the characters didn't call the freaking police. I would guess there are societal pressures that would make a rape accusation more shameful that actually being raped, but I can't speak with authority on the subject. It could be that involving the police would lead to the character being removed from the story, which is horrible from a narrative perspective, but then again what narrative purpose does the rape rape serve to begin with?

As far as I know that plot of Hana Yori was not in the anime, so if you only watch that no bigge. But seriously this is a fairly common occurrence. Hell lets just look at last season, Mayo Chiki had a mother and daughter who beat there son/brother to the point he got a fear of girls. But in the show its one big joke, hell it drives the whole plot.

I think the main point of that kind of situation in boys over followers could be attributed to the fact he a super elite whose had anything he wanted handed to him, everyone bows to his will, and he is a 16-17 year old on top of it.

It probably not an uncommon situation for a person in authority to do something like this, granted I dont think the victim then goes on to marry the offender.

And by the way, Tsukino likes Ryo, he's the mysterious charming character she likes through out the series. She honestly hates Tsukasa through out at least the first half of the series, and I dont think he is every portrayed in any kind of over blemished light.

This really doesn't warrant any action because spoiler[he took the glasses, and still LOST. Afterwards, he gives back the glasses and actually confesses over what he did. Arata doesn't punish because 1) There's no need and 2) It's pretty obvious why he did it in the first place and he's already learned his lesson. They're kids, what kind of further punishment does the kid need?]

You kind of picked a really tame and very easily explainable answer for this one here. Now if you wanted to bring up Miki Aihara's "Hot Gimmick" where an almost rape happens as well. Well, yeah, I can't explain why she stays friends with the guy after that.

Ill freely admit that its a kinda tame example, its just the most recent one from shows that IV watched, freshest in my mind.
But Id still disagree that action wasnt warrented. Kids shouldnt be left to resolve these sorts of things between themselves. The teachers should be stepping in.

Yeah, because the last thing we want is for kids to learn how to handle situations by themselves. And as we all know, no one ever gets away with doing bad things in real life. Rolling Eyes Riiight.

What? Kids should absolutely be left to resolve their own conflicts. If it gets out of hand then teachers can step in.

Also, I laughed that not one of the Answerfans mentioned Chihayafuru. Oh anime fandom.

Man, I love me some anime/manga guide books! I have an (unofficial and slightly boring) InuYasha one, a Bleach one, a Death Note one, and a Vampire Knight one! I love when they have extra info on the characters and especially when there are quizzes! (Created by the creator(s)!) I love things like that!! I have more of them than art books! My first was a Japanese Tokyo Mew Mew one...I ca't even read it, but I cherish it so!!! That and when they contain character design art! I love that stuff!!!!

And, as far as Fall 2011 anime...so far I'm trying out C3, Kimi to Boku, Chihayafuru (which I honestly think I'm gonna enjoy more with them as kids), Un-Go (I want that hat!!!! Anime hyper Plus I love the ending song!), Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, Ben-to (reminds me of Baka to Test with less bright color and food), Phi-Brain, and Sekaiichi season 2.

So far Phi-Brain's protagonist and rockin' opening theme has my greatest interest. And Horizon, though full of busty chicks and a perv for a main character...I can't help but keep watching it...I think I actually like the perv! Anime hyper

So I guess my favs so far are: Horizon, Phi-Brain, and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi s2.
I think I need to see a few more ep's of Ben-to before I can make a decision on that one. Kimi to Boku doesn't have too much of my interest, but I keep trying to like it, same goes for C3. Chihayafuru is sort of in the middle for me right now.

About the rape thing in Hana Yori...

Once again, it really boils down to a difference in cultures.

In Japan, groping is very common. It's gotten to the point that the Tokyo Metro had to create "Women Only" cars that are designed for women to use during commute hours. A lot of men view groping as a 'sport', and many go on internet sites to plan out attacks. While there is police presence at many Tokyo subway stations, trying to get them to take action on a groper is next to impossible. Try targetting an individual who, by the time you run into a police officer, may have already taken the train to another station and is now long gone.

However, despite the disgust that I have over men thinking this as a great source of entertainment, the real problem is how the Japanese approach this problem. If a woman is groped, raped or is the victim of any kind of sexual harrassment, the overwhelming view is that it is the woman's fault that it happened. She *must* have dressed provacatively, advertised her goods, asked for it, etc. Most Japanese women don't physically fight back, and that probably explains that, when some punk decided to grope me over there in the train that he was utterly shocked when I slugged him. I personally feel that if more women fought back that more men would think twice about molesting them.

So, I feel the reason why Tsukino doesn't want to bring up the issue of the attempted rape is because of stigma. It won't be viewed as Tsukasa's fault, but rather, her fault. Someone, like a teacher or a parent, will likely try to explain it as Tsukino having done something to provoke the attack, and that, at least in the mind of most Japanese women, would only bring about more shame.

And as for this season's anime, the only one I'm enjoying is Chihayafuru.

Ummm...
Im certainly not saying that children shouldnt learn to handle such situations. Im only saying that in the case of something like "someone is cheating during this tournament" as far as Iv always seen, the game is stoped immediatly, and the cheater is disqualified. This helps to teach the kid that cheating is not an acceptable way to get by in life.
By your logic, the bullying situations in a lot of anime that teachers dont lift a finger to stop can be justified because "Eh, he's gotta learn to look out for himself, so, I wont do shit."

But nobody knew he took the glasses. WE know it, but nobody else did and they only had their own suspicions about it. So how can a teacher stop a match and discipline for something they don't even know is happening?

Oh goody a rape thread.

This type of "woman falling in love with her rapist" plotthread isn't exclusive to anime and manga. In General Hospital, the character Laura Webber was raped by Luke Spencer and they ended up getting together afterwards and originating the term "supercouple." :S And then of course we have stuff romanticizing unhealthy behaviors in relationships such as Twilight (though your mileage may vary with how much leeway you give to the "but he's a vampire" logic.)

A lot of it can be contributed to the differences in culture. As warped as it may be, Japanese audiences won't react nearly as badly as American audiences to scene, storyline, or aesthetic choices that seem to or explicitly insult someone's gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. (This includes anything ranging from the attempted gang rape in Boys Over Flowers to something like making every character in the Hetalia anime except for Cuba white (even the African characters)).

Getting off that topic though, there are only a couple of shows that I think I'll watch this season - Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 2, Un-Go, Guilty Crown (even though the plot looks really stupid), and maybe Mirai Nikki. Otherwise I think I'll take this time to get caught up on shows from past seasons that actually look good.
