KFC was brilliant to make Japan believe fried chicken was the traditional Christmas meal in America. Even if they eventually learned better, it's now a solid tradition and you have to place your Christmas KFC order months in advance. That's some serious marketing power.

I hope this spawns fanart where they dress up Ronald McDonald as Vegeta and the duke it out. I'm kinda tired of all the Cloud/Sephiroth cosplay those two have had in fanart over the years.

Funny that I'm seeing this. I just ran across a inspirational poster someone posted on their FB page. I wonder does anyone know the strange mythos behind 'Colonel Sanders and Japan. For years, there has been the constant barrage of jokes that pop up surrounding the 'Colonel' and 'Commodore Perry'. But my first experience to a 'Colonel Sanders' joke (meme) was in 'Megazone 23'. Since then the jokes died down and we haven't seen much of it again until years later when we're reminded he's still around in Japan. The last place I'd seen him was in 'Higurashi'. I'm surprised that this Goku joke never happened earlier.
If anything the Colonel is a meme in itself before the internet came along. |

Probably not actually. The man was in many films (mostly indy stuff) and always supported this sorta thing. Often provided catering just because he loved films. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0761571/bio |

Whoa, really I didn't know the Colonel had appeared on film before. That's quite interesting. Thanks for the info. Anyway, this is very cool and hilarious. Dressing up the Colonel as Goku. |

The Osaka one is in Abeno-ku, Osaka.
The Okinawa one is in Naha. When I was in college in Japan, there was a caucasian teacher there that all the students said looked like Colonel Sanders. He really didn't; he was a white guy in his 50s with white hair and glasses but that's where the similarities ended. |

I really don't understand why Japan likes Colonel Sanders so much. The fried chicken part, sure, we all love fried chicken, but the colonel himself? No other Western fast food mascot seems to show up in anime like the Colonel does. At best you'll merely see a WcDonald's, but Wonald is never there.
And yet bizarre scenes like this one from Project A-ko happen all the time. Rena takes one form the dump, he sometimes shows up in terrible 90s OVAs, he's surely in manga and stuff too... I'm glad anime is doing something with him at least, right? |
