Quote: | Comic Market 79, Japan's largest manga event... |
Nice editorial spin there, but lets be honest, it's Japan's largest doujinshi event. Since dounjinshi is about 75% smut, Comiket is easily Japan's, if not the world's, largest porn peddling convention.

It is both Japan's largest manga event and Japan's largest dōjinshi event (although not all dōjinshi is manga).

This is not true. An "Ask John" column at Anime Nation discusses why some overseas fans have this misconception.

If you want to get some real numbers, there is a list out there of every doujin available at C79 broken down by age target (all/18+), series and if it is BL or not. My memory says the actual 18+ % is somewhere around 40% but I can't find it again.

As far as western fans are concerned, the only important things out of Comiket are hentai doujinshi. I'd like to see some dedicated scanlators for non-h doujinshi.

I have a Question to ask of anyone who might know!
What is doujinshi ??
Is it manga just with a new name done by someone who was not the author?

The lexicon in the Anime News Network encyclopedia gives a definition that begins as follows:
Quote: | Dōjinshi manga are non-professional and/or self published comics, and dōjin refers to any self-published work. Dōjinshi manga can be broken into two broad categories: fan-comics and original works. Fan-comics, much like fan-fiction, are based on established properties and created by fans of those properties. Original works are based on the dōjinshi-ka's (creator) original ideas. The only difference between mainstream manga and original dōjinshi is that the dōjinshi is not published by a publishing company; it is self-published by the dōjinshi-ka.

Doujinshi also covers novels, visual novels, games and music. Kara no Kyoukai was originally released as doujin novels, Tsukihime, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Umineko, and all other 17th expansion releases are doujin as well. Besides eroge of course, there are also lots of other doujin soft, like tons of fighters, including a doujin Tsukihime fighter

Interestingly according to Matt Thorn, in the early days when attendance was largely female "With the introduction of yaoi, attendance figures at the Tokyo Comic Market shot from five digits to six." There's still a lot today, they just don't get torrented as much lol.

Comiket has also been quite the hotspot for music, especially if you enjoy Vocaloids (Miku Hatsune and such)
