![]() Manga and anime fan ? You've got stacks of DVDs, a huge manga library, or a mountain of action figures… Did you ever dream that you could have the concept art used to produce all your favorite anime characters? Discover Anime Cels !! All prices for a real piece of art, handpainted in the biggest Japanese studios. You now own the anime, each "cel" is unique. Technically speaking, what is an anime cel ? A cel is a unique part of animes. It is the step during which a drawing is painted on a sheet of celluloid, a preparatory step preceding the anime’s animation and filming. So if you have an animation celluloid, you have an image that has been used to create an anime!! An cel is a transparent sheet of cellulose, on the front side of which an animator traces black lines, using different techniques (flash or tracing by hand), which correspond to the features of the sketch; then, on the back side, an animator paints the character’s (or object’s) interior. Why paint on the back? By doing this, the paint on the back side has a smooth and glossy appearance. Because of this process, you do not see any color overflows, which can be seen on the back of the cel. Indeed, the animator almost always begins with dark colors. This makes it easier to apply lighter layers, thereby making it possible to have some overflow (always on the back side) of lighter colors onto the darker colors. Of course, the first layer of paint must be dry before the animator applies the second one. A cel is therefore painted in several sittings. This also explains the thickness that you can feel if you run your fingers gently over the back of one. What is a background? A background is simply the scenery that animators use for a cartoon. The background is painted onto a sheet of cardboard-like paper; the painting method depends on the how the background will be used. A special technique is used for "harmony" cels. These are often bigger than cels, making it easier to animate some sequences. So, to conclude, a cel, once equipped with its background, forms the cartoon’s raw material; it is therefore what you can see on the screen. Hence the value of the cel. It is, so to speak, a work of art in its entirety.
