Dear Funimation and Mr. Ayers,

I really enjoy watching your DVDs. In quite a few cases, I purchase several copies to support the industry and combat piracy. Please find attached a few of my recent orders from RACS (www.animecornerstore.com).

I have one slight issue with your subtitles. Don't get me wrong - I think the translation quality is excellent, and the inclusion of honourifics helps keep it close to the original meaning. The only issue I have is when honourifics and some Japanese-specific words are italicised, especially when the sentence ends with an exclamation mark, and the mark is not italicised. It's annoying, and I don't think it's necessary - most anime fans know which words are unique to Japan and can look them up if need fit.

Once again, thank you so much for bringing anime to the West, and if you purchase the license to the remaining Hikago episodes from Viz (but retain the same translator and script adaptor they used), I would be forever grateful and work hard to purchase 100 copies of each volume.

If a word or phrase has become so widely used and understood that it has become part of the English language — such as the French "bon voyage" or the abbreviation for the latin et cetera, "etc." — we would not italicize it. Often this becomes a matter of private judgment and context. For instance, whether you italicize the Italian sotto voce depends largely on your audience and your subject matter.

So, IMO, the "judgement" part is whether or not the word or phrase is wide-spread enough in English usage that the word essentially ceases to be foreign.
