Changed thread title. Leaving thread open for now. --willag

For a long time, folks argued that Dr. Slump would never get an official U.S. release because it is too long (nobody will buy the DVDs), it is too old (the Dragonball connection can only go so far), and the humor is too Japanese to be localized.

However, fashion trends have gone around the circle far enough that Arale actually looks surprisingly modern rather than super 80s (or I guess now she looks surprisingly modern-80s-hipster?) -- I think the character designs could work now.

Localization doesn't seem as big of a deal-breaker as before -- I know a lot of folks who actually seem to seek out the more "Japanese" stuff.

And of course with the streaming model on sites like YouTube going from "view count" to "time spent on the website", long-format shows seem like they might be more marketable now.

Thoughts?

This is a speculation thread for a specific series, which is not allowed per Teh Rules (#10b). However, mbanu, if you wish to turn this into a general discussion thread on the viability of streaming for older anime series, then I'll leave it open (change the thread title and edit a bit of the opening post). Otherwise, this thread is being locked after 24 hours.

If the cost is right, streaming old shows could work. I enjoyed watching streams of "older" anime like Sherlock Hound. Recognizable works like Dr. Slump I would imagine can get maybe a decent view count, but the cost could be a problem.

I would think that it would cost just as much to translate, edit and subtitle an episode of any of these older shows as it does to provide the same services for a new show. As a result, the streaming company would have to balance the costs against perceived demand. I suspect Dr. Slump and similar shows would rate fairly low on such a cost/benefit analysis.

There's also the question of what kind of condition the master tapes are in, if they even still exist. Digitising analogue material is time consuming and expensive.

It seems like the kind of thing Discotek would go all-in with.
