It's interesting to see opinions so different from your own.
Anohana annoyed me and I didn't finish it. I didn't think the intro worked very well (I found Menma very irritating which wrecked the climax of episode 1) and blowing a whole episode on the characters playing pokemon bored me terribly. |

Yumekui Merry did end up rather disappointing. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. It certainly had the potential for much more than it ended up being.
And yes, the fight scenes were weird. Just...odd and uninvolving. |

Ano Hana is a really good series. I recommended it to one of my friends months ago, and they actually bought the new release without even watching it yet. Later, my friend told me that he started feeling sad during the first scene of the first episode, and teared up on almost every episode, lol.
I had moderately high expectations for Yumekui Merry when it came out last year. I even watched it alongside anime-of-2011 Madoka Magica, so you could imagine what my view of it was in comparison while following both shows at that time. But I guess what won me over for Yumekui Merry wasn't so much for a lot of deep reasons. Merry's character design looked so cool that I ended up drawing a picture of her about to punch somebody's lights out, lol. I also thought she stood out a little as a character and wasn't a crazy tsundere beating up the protagonist and blaming him for petty situations all the time. Besides Merry and John Doe, it was hard to care a lot about the other characters or what was going to happen to them. I really wanted to find out more about John Doe and Merry's "berserk mode". As far as production quality, the animation looks really nice on blu-ray, but the music was what really got me into the mood of the show. When it comes down to it, despite its flaws (especially the abrupt conclusion) Yumekui Merry felt like its own thing (to me at least), and I don't regret adding it to my collection. Anohana was definitely one of my favorite series from last year along with Madoka and Steins;Gate so glad it's being mentioned here. The fact that it's currently streaming on CR makes it more convenient to re-watch which I'm considering to do again in the future (maybe this year). I'm also glad that Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is being mentioned in this latest Shelf Life as it's one of the underrated series of the Spring Season that I've enjoyed watching.
And I agree with Dream Eater Merry. I thought it was just "meh" and wasn't anything special although it did have some moments here and there. Also, impressive collection there

I would have rated Mine no Fujiko as Flushable and Dream Eater Merry as Perishable. But at least we agree on Ano Hana.
Just to be clear on why I would have given those rating, well Mine no Fujiko tried to be 'mature' but it overdid it; see Zenigata's sex scene for example, or the school episode. Also, the quality of the overall writing was poor, extending to laughably bad in some episodes. As for Dream Eater Merry, episode nine caused the show to plummet so far in the ratings that it broke the sound barrier on the way down. And since it wasn't all that impressive to begin with - slow and boring being the operative words - I really don't consider it anywhere near Rental Shelf. |

I would have gone with "predictable", though her article had an interesting use on the word "cliche". Ano Hana by itself is not cliched but when compared to anything with "ghosts", the "supernatural" or even episodes of Scooby Doo then the series gets tiring pretty quickly. {By episode 4, I was yelling at the protagonist "She interacts with objects! She has mass! Just ask her to do something in front of other people!" Guess what happens...} It would have made a decent movie {Maybe you could even call it "Topper". Or how about "Harvey"? "The Ghost and Mrs Muir? No, that's just dumb} and I liked this series for the character devlopment, no, I liked the series for how their personalities didn't develop after their childhood friend died. And that they moved on after talking with each about their feelings from back then {The exact how of it was overly theatrical and involved the phrase "milking the giant cow" for some reason. Animated so it couldn't use the excuse that it was some random actor's choice. Classy, it wasn't} That's not AnoHana though. Why isn't it? Because at no point does that premise involve a selfless, untraumatic ghost girl that has unfinished business {oh, basic stock phrase involving the undeceased. Still not cliche enough here, I guess} with... spoiler[Hide and go seek. Well, it's a bit more than that but she wanted to help her friends even though she was dead. How nice? Couldn't she have just paid for some therapy?] Hell, it's like that Angel Beats mess only with one dead person rather than all of them. Writers, listen up: Dead people don't evolve, they don't develop. They realize and then move on. That's it. So be damn sure that when creating a ghost as a protagonist, don't. Crap, I should have told this to M Night Shamalyan years ago. Plot device? It worked for that Shakespeare hack. Antagonist? See any horror movie involving a ghost of some sort? Another show relying on lazy sentamentality combined with moe to induce feelings of "Oh, I got to protect this pale weak flower! Oh, she's dead. I hate myself! Still! Arrghh.", I hate shows like this one and Angel Beats. Hey, this is the first time I ever used the phrase "moe" as a negative. As always, your mileage may vary. I've been accused by more than one person that I think to much when digesting stories. |

Aside from Fujiko, the other two shows sound good too. I need a good anime to replace the short-lived Zetman for me.

Anohana got a bit too melodramatic at the end for my taste which felt kinda forced spoiler[all that crying and screaming didn't feel 'healing' at all but rather gave me a headache.
 I guess we were supposed to cry there, but it certainly didn't work with me...,] but all in all it wasn't a bad series.

Yeah the ending of Ano Hana was way too over the top for me so it definitely lost some points with me.
That being said I still enjoyed the series enough to purchase it. Doesn't hurt it was released by NISA which have my favorite releases (although I agree with the review the art book could have been better) |

Oh, that explains why your opinions are different: you think to much (sic). It surely couldn't be a matter of taste; no, you simply think more than the majority of those who holds the opposite opinion. Incidentally, why can't ghosts evolve as characters? I was unaware that there was some kind of rule limiting character development to the encephalographically-enabled. Finally, when you're offering a critique on an anime that's largely regarded well, such as anohana (the ninth best-rated series on this website, and the third best not related to any previous instalment in a franchise), using another critically-regarded series (in this instance Angel Beats!) weakens your arguments and indicates that your critique is based in your own tastes. I would never compare a series to Clannad to illustrate its failings, because as much as I despise the title, it is useless as a measuring stick for low quality. |

Wow, your review of Mine Fujiko makes it sound a lot more interesting than the "ooh, sexy" (p)reviews I read before. I think I'll check it out after all.
The same goes for AnoHana. The synopses made it sound rather meh, but your review has me interested. Maybe I'll look into this too. Thanks, Erin!
