NEWS: Mamoru Oshii, Production I.G Make 3D Cyborg 009 Anime

Heh, when you think about it, this type of cell-shaded 3D actually could be used for stereoscopic 3D, in theory -- excluding 'tricks' like 2D backgrounds or effects/additions drawn over the top of frames. I wonder what that'd look like, considering that the whole idea of cell-shading is to prevent things from looking 3D.

Semi-cell-shaded things like this or this could definitely look good in stereoscopic 3D, but that's getting off-topic.

Wow, the same company that makes a phone (which brand I use now and days) is now sponsoring Cyborg 009 3D. That is pretty cool, although I don't really like 3D that much.

As for Cyborg 009, the anime is fantastic and well worth watching. The manga? Okay, but not nearly as great as the anime.

It would be something else if a Panasonic phone was in the show.

So, is this one the semi-sequel to SkullMan that people mentioned back when that show was released?

Uh, Skullman was a minor one-shot compared to Cyborg 009, which is one of the most famed manga & anime franchises in Japan during the 60s, 70s and 80s and what made Ishinomori famous. Someone else did do a remake and expanded on the story much, much later, (that was what the little-heralded Bones show was based on) but you could say both of those were just a way of paying homage to Cyborg 009. In other words, Cyborg 009 is the real deal; Skullman is just an accessory (that was likely worked on by people who were fans of the real deal.)

That's why I said semi-sequel. From what I recall when Skullman came out, people said that the original one shot was broken down and reformed into the later, more epic Cyber 009. They also speculated that the changes and expansions in the anime, along with its cliffhanger ending, were intended to set this series up as a sort-of sequel.

I think you're a little mixed up. The Skull Man was originally a one-shot manga which was broken down and retooled into another incredibly famous Shotaro Ishinomori work, Kamen Rider. Cyborg 009 has existed since the 1960s, with new anime adaptations being rather consistently made each decade. Why, one could practically...write a feature article / column on such a thing...

The most recent Cyborg 009 anime prior to this--which was AWESOME and I command the powers that be to release a complete uncut set in the US--was partially aired on the Cartoon Network years ago. In any case, there is no storyline connection between any Cyborg 009 anime or manga and any anime or manga adaptation of The Skull Man. No, I don't care what that Wikipedia entry says.

The most recent Cyborg 009 anime prior to this--which was AWESOME and I command the powers that be to release a complete uncut set in the US--was partially aired on the Cartoon Network years ago.
