Of those three, the only one I can at least understand is the Dragonball one simply because it was in an elementary and middle school library, so kids had easy access to it.

Yeah, I can understand the Dragon Ball one. (Whose bright idea was it to stick a graphic novel rated "T" in an elementary level library?) Though I don't think it was necessary to remove it from the high school library. Probably just a precaution, though, to avoid any other controversy...And the public library probably has it.

It amazes me how people try to protect their children from something by making them entirely ignorant of it.

Instead of trying to hide stuff and keep them away why not just educate them about the subject and let them know what's right/wrong or good/bad about it.

It's like most of society has lost their sense of responsibility.

I can understand all 3, but I have to agree with Gasero.

What does responsibility have to do with anything? It's so much easier to blame others for your own failings.

In our society it sometimes seems to be pretty much a rule these days: "It can't be my fault, it must be somebody elses! Where's my attorney?". It's sad, really.

At least it wasn't banned. Common sense prevails.

There are intelligent and reasonable people in New Mexico. Good to know.

The sad part is that these people probably aren't trying to ban these books for the reasons they say they are.

They are banning then because they probably "feel that they should." Basically, the content in the book makes them feel awkward and therefore it must be wrong.

They don't give the slightest care for the well being of the kids that they claim to be protecting.

-hits head against wall- WHY WOULD YOU EVEN PUT DRAGON BALL IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!? I mean, really!? Are people of this day and age just that stupid?! I just wanna... UGH! SERIOUSLY. Evil or Very Mad
I really hate the parents of this generation. They blame books and media for their bad parenting. I read deathnote, I haven't been scarred for life or gone on a murdering spree! Death is a part of life, it happens, and they don't want teens to read a fictional book about it? It's not even that bad. Most of 'em die of heart attacks. Hardly bloody at all.
What's next? Ban shoujo manga because teens shouldn't read about romance?

Dragon Ball I can somewhat understand as it can be pretty inappropriate, especially for kids. Yet shouldn't they be scanning through comic books for inappropriate material before offering them to children to read....? Especially in elementary schools?

Yet why is everyone picking on Death Note? Why is it that they make us read novels such as Lord of the Flies and The Lottery in school yet people are getting bent out of shape over manga books like Death Note? Those novels/short stories I mentioned above are morbid. spoiler[Stoning an innocent woman to death is less offensive then a comic book high school character writing names in a book that magically causes people to die? Riiiiight......]

Oh right, I remember now. It is because we hate most of the crap they make us read in school (at least I did) and we want to read things we like. So when they find out whats popular they will nitpick it to find a reason why it needs to be banned and then slap a banning sticker on it.

Lordy. When will they ever grow up? =/

The parents really must be retarded or ignorant to try to ban mangas. I would understand banning Dragon Ball since it was in a Elementary School library and it is a bit inappropriate. But then again, who cares? They may claim to protect their child from nudity or violence, but it's not like they are going to be scarred or do something stupid. If the parent doesn't want the child to read those kinds of books, how about keeping their child away from them? Until maybe they are older. In my point of view of why they are trying to ban these kinds of manga, it's pretty dumb. :/

I'm also kind of surprised that the florida incident wasn't mentioned. Then again, maybe they didn't bring it up because they figure that topic has had plenty of flames pointed at it already.

On the article itself... I also ask... Dragon Ball... a manga rightly earning a rating of TEEN... was in an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL?! Shocked What's wrong with those people?! Of course it's inappropriate for 5-10 year olds! It's targeted at teenagers! Granted.... it's aimed at the lower end of the teen scale... but who's counting details like that? Wink
EDIT: I am, however, aware that the Japanese target audience is even younger than the US target audience

Deathnote... well I can understand why some parents wouldn't want their kids to read it... but that's what parenting is for. Haven't these people ever heard of it?

Instead of raging about "inappropriate" content and demanding a ban, what parents should be doing is paying attention to what the kid's reading. When they come home with something they think is inappropriate, they should take it away, or in the case of library books, make them return it and don't let them read it.

Of course what would be even better is if parents would teach their kids how to distinguish between what's real and what's not. But... that's probably about like asking for the world to rotate the opposite direction.

The problem with the Dragon Ball ban was that they also removed it from all their county high school libraries. But even in the lower grades like grades 7-8 (2 yrs before high school), I think it's just fine. Ironically it is targeted at ages 9+ in Japan and most other places and countries don't have a problem with it.

And what about written material? They had exhibited certain pages to show to the council why DB should be removed but yet I bet if you actually read certain passages out loud from many books in those libraries I'm sure parents would gasp and be just as shocked if not more so. 1984 is one. Heinlein's novels are another, and many many other contemporary works.

Uhhh... why SHOULDN'T DragonBall be in elementary schools? It's generally a family friendly series. Last I checked, it was rated All from Viz, and Viz already censored some of it in some of their re-releases.

So what is the big deal?
