Well heres the deal. My wife watches a lot of anime with me. But all the anime we watch is stuff that I like, and if she happens to want to watch because she might like it then thats how it is. I am looking to purchase a couple box sets just for "her" if that makes sense.
Now before people try to backseat mod here this isnt recommend me one title based off of what we watch. I will tell you what she has watched with me if you want, but heres what I am asking for. I am asking for the top, I dont know 5 anime titles that were aimed to please the womens - However, Nightmare Mode, they have to be dubbed. She hates subs. She wont watch anything thats not in English; anime, movies, music (though you dont watch music you get it). None of it. So can anyone list me the "bestsellers" of women's anime that have dubs. Even though I hate moe with a passion I dont care if it is indeed moe since it is not for me. |

This is pretty much still a recommendation thread. However, if you want to turn this into a discussion of titles aimed at (or at least easily accessible to) female viewers older than than their high school years then that might work.
Of course, you should also remember, too, that there is no universal set of female-friendly titles. What suits the taste of some of our female forumites and staff sometimes surprises me greatly. (For instance, I would never have imagined that RIN ~Daughters of Mnemosyne~ would be a title that women might appreciate, but yet our Shelf Life columnist Erin gave it a thumbs-up.) Any title labeled as "shojo" is, of course, aimed at female audiences, though generally those of the teen set. Titles labeled as "josei" skew towards more mature female audiences. One solid example of this is Diamond Daydreams, which is an anthology of more mature short stories about women and their travails in love. It isn't needlessly sappy and is fairly well-written, so male viewers should find it at least tolerable. |

This is what I am after, I guess what I am asking for is for people to either tell me their favorite "shojo" or this "josei" - or list me the best sellers. Then Id look those up and pick which one I think my wife would like and buy it (after downloading an episode or two to see if its worth buying and not crap) |

I've always wondered why I liked DBZ more than MKR. even as a teenager I liked all that "romance" stuff only when it was connected with good story and characters. I think that good anime don't have gender, so don't think about that in such a way. The questions you should answer are: Does she like fantasy or sf or prefer slice of life? Action or slow development? Comedy or drama etc. To tell the truth wise anime about adults are still minority and unfortunately lots of them weren't released in USA. It's hard for me to recommend something to somebody I don't know, but recently I've made a compilation for my teacher. She enjoyed (italic for those that I've heard have english dub) [EDIT: Removed because it was a pure list. Guys n' gals, just giving a list of titles without comment or annotation isn't allowed. - Key] As you can see- mostly SF and fantasy:) |

Do you have a couple examples of anime that she's watched with you that she enjoyed? Being a woman myself, I tend to lean towards anime with a strong female role. I like a little romance sprinkled in, but I don't want it to be all about relationships. I like a little action too.
A couple anime that I particularily enjoyed that I suppose you can classify as 'anime for women' is Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, Vision of Escaflowne, Skip Beat! (while at the top of my list and completely worth it, it's not yet available in the US, and you can only watch it streamed subtitled online), and Nana. I don't want to go too crazy with suggestions not knowing the genre your wife likes. |

My wifes favorite anime is Ghost in the Shell SAC (both seasons) and all of the Ghost in the Shell movies. And yeah you and her sound a little similar with your preferences. She loves Kusanagi and the relationship thats teased with Batou. That and she loves how tough Kusanagi is. That and the thought provoking messages GitSAC offers.
She also loved Eva and Rahxephon a ton for the reasons everyone else loves those particular shows. Good action mixed with interesting thought concepts and relationships. She usually watches whatever I watch (only if its dubs) and right now as I type this we are watching our new Shamurai Champloo bluray and she loves this series too because of the humor, good drawn action, and overall interesting characters. |

I'm not an adult so don't take my concrete words for either of these titles and their Josei-ness. But they are good shows, I liked them at least. It's super cute that your doing this for your wife, so here's what I think.
Paradise Kiss. It's a big coming of age story, but instead of being in a happy perfect situation, the lead female is forced to make some pretty huge choices, and the people she surrounds herself with in their fashion studio are also a far cry from perfect. The art is really pretty, not that I'd call it moe, and this title is still easily found. Haibane Renmei. It's set in a fantasy world, but I'm not sure how aimed at women it is, if it all. It's a superb show, that happens to be out of print. It's slow and a character study. If you could PM me with what she has watched and liked, I could tell you how much I endorse the recommendation after I find out what she likes. I am a teenager, so my idea of grown up shows might differ from the truth a good deal. Both of these shows have dubs at least, but they are a bit older, licensed by the dead Geneon, Parakiss will be easy to find, but tracking down Haibane Renmei will be harder. I may tack Utena to the list, but it's been ages since I've seen it all the way through, but its aimed at an older audience, and long out of print. I know a lot of good shoujo titles, but I am not to aware of the line between shoujo and josei. I would love a enlightenment. |

The romance and comedy recommendations threads could probably furnish you with a ton if you filter them a bit.
Off the top of my head: Monster is a title for everybody. It's an expansive mystery/thriller/drama series that pretty much anyone can enjoy if they like intelligent entertainment. It revolves around a Japanese brain surgeon who performs surgery on a boy who shows up 20 years later and frames him for a series of serial killings. |

If she likes GitS for the strong and competent female lead, then Moribito is a very good bet. I've yet to encounter any fan of Kusanagi who didn't love Balsa.
No, they don't -- for instance, I consider it a mediocre anime. Also, it's far from being the kind of story a mature woman would like. From where I sit, it's a story told for angsty kids who daydream of getting back at the world, and who have yet to develop the kind of moral maturity that lets them understand why killing people is wrong. Presumably torreyjs' wife is past that stage in her life. I would certainly hope so. - abunai |

Not bad show, but trust me, not everyone will fall in love with DN, especially when he is a bit older than "the protagonist". It tried to be controversial and sophisticated, for me it was just boring.
back to the topic I'm not a fan of that kind, but it sounds that Technolyze and Heat Guy J would suit her tastes. Oh, and I nearly forget! Utena, LOGH and BOTS- if she don't run away seeing the design it's very possible that she would enjoy them.. Seriously, they are ones with the best plot I've ever seen. And try to convict her that subs aren't bad. Watching only dubbed ones she miss masterpieces like Oniisama E and Lady Oscar!
Why? I should watch comedies and romances because I'm woman? Well, they are those who can call Utena comedy so why don't we call LOGH romance? |

You need to work on your posts. One-line ripostes are not, repeat not acceptable. Be that as it may, I will answer: it is not a bad show, it is a mediocre show (in my opinion, of course -- its popularity testifies to its ability to grab at least one audience segment with remarkable effect, regardless of my poor opinion of it). However, that is beside the point. It's a bad show for the purposes of this thread because it doesn't fit the profile requested. You didn't argue for it, you just threw the title out as a 100% brainless knee-jerk reaction. Someone mentions an anime request, you respond with Death Note. If someone asked for a great show for a five-year-old, you'd likely give the same response. It's not a considered response in any way, it's simply mindless fan-drivel. If this were a test, you'd be getting a failing grade. - abunai |

Where can I find a box set of this Moribito? More importantly this is all I can find, and its not on Rightstuf.

Walmart has a cheap version for 30 dollars, it's just on a big spindle, but it sure is a nice price. EDIT: Well my store has it for 30 dollars, online it's for 50. I think most stores have it for the 30 dollar price. Last edited by sailorsarah08 on Wed Mar 17, 2010 3:30 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'd say Skip Beat! has a high chance of succeeding. It's on CR for free, with crappy subs, but it hasn't been licensed. Well, the series focuses on comedy, but it's also quite strong on drama(quite limited, and you'll find more drama as the end draws closer). I don't recall any sexual depiction, either. So, I'd say that this is one of the best comedy series out there. I'm sure your wife would side with the main character. But then again, there's no dub. Overall, I'd say that this title is more, well, open to women than to men, even though I really enjoyed it.
