Naturally, I have to define what SIW? Syndrome is. In my definition, SIW? Syndrome refers to a situation where a show you really enjoyed received a DVD release, but other seasons of that same series haven't yet. So the dilemma becomes, should I wait and see if those other seasons get a DVD release or should I watch them fansubbed?
For me, this is not an ethical/moral question (although it might be for some people), but rather a reflection of the fact that I prefer NOT to have seen a series in its entirety before buying it. I know some of you are the exact opposite.
So, in my case, I own When They Cry and Shakugan no Shana and would very much like to see their respective second seasons, neither which have been released in N.A. yet. My hope is that they will be released dubbed, so for the time being I'm holding off watching the fansubs even though I am dying to see these seasons.
Anyone else suffer from this?

No, if I'm just getting into a franchise I buy and watch what's licensed and then if there's more or sequels that are aren't I switch to fansubs. I then buy those later if they are released and if they aren't then I've seen them so it doesn't really matter.
Although, I keep up with several fansubed shows a season and watch even more legal streams on Crunchyroll and Funimation's website so the majority of what I buy domestically are things I felt were worth owning and adding to my massive anime wall. Thus situations like the ones you describe don't happen often.

Nope. With so much out there, a missing additional season isn't reason enough to omit the first season.
If I had waited, I'd have missed out on many series this way, and that in itself is a crime (punishable by ramen noodles shoved up the nose).
This industry is much, much too fickle to wait.

Oops, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't talking about waiting until ALL seasons of a series is available on DVD before watching ANY of it. I'm strictly talking about situations where you've seen the first season on DVD and there is a second (or more) season, non-dubbed fansub available. Do you feel compelled to wait to see if a dubbed version is released on DVD or do you just go ahead and watch the fansub?
Again, I stress this is not a "is watching fansubs a good or bad thing" issue for me. It is strictly a thing of whether it is better to wait to see if a dub version gets released at some point versus the impatience of wanting to see the fansub now (since I don't like buying a title if I have already seen it in its entirety).

Ah, got it now.
The only time I couldn't wait was with Clannad, because TANoD took way too long to issue out the episodes (they're just now doing After Story).
I've yet to follow up with Familiar of Zero, Shana, nor Nanoha, but not due to waiting for the DVD as much as it is watching what I have on DVD now. Every time I "catch up", there's another order on its way.
Though, I will be spending much more time scraping videos this year for series I can't ever get on DVD. There's just a whopping amount of stuff out there and it's a shame, really, given all these titles are locked up under licensing, most likely never to see the light of day ever again. That reason alone is why I believe fan subs are here to stay.
I guess I never thought about "waiting", simply because I'm too busy with watching other stuff to really care.
Now, FUNimation, where's season 2 of Spice & Wolf? Don't make me wait on you.

When a DVD release is sub only like Clannad, I am less inclined to wait for subsequent releases as opposed to just watching the fansub. It's really only when I think there is a chance of a dub release do I consider waiting. But Spice and Wolf is a good example. The first release was dubbed, which gives me confidence that season 2 will be as well, therefore I won't watch the fansub.

No, I usually want to see most if not all of a series before i buy it. I'm very glad I didn't buy Final Fantasy: Unlimited and Wolfs Rain before watching them (I didn't like their endings.) Though I do feel like I should wait before buying the Detective Conan/Case Closed movies to see if they re-release them on double feature sets like the first two movies.

I only buy anime I've already watched completely, so the issue is a little different for me. I prefer to have complete series, so if only the first season is available on DVD, I'm in this 'should I wait' bind.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha I like enough to have bought the first two seasons even though the third is not available. Hell Girl I will probably buy at some point, even though it seems unlikely that the second and third seasons will be released as well, because there aren't any real cliffhangers involved.
For Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni ('When They Cry') it's different though. What is advertised as a first 'season' is actually only half of the story. Without the second half it is totally incomplete. So even though I loved the anime, I'm not going to buy it until Higurashi Kai is released as well.
I hope the practice of releasing anime series two or three episodes at a time dies out for real soon. It's annoying to have to wait up to a year before I can buy the complete boxset.

I rarely watch anything over one season long so this isn't much of an issue for me.

This doesn't really happen to me since I pretty much never do a blind buy, but assuming I did I wouldn't wait.
I'll buy what's out now and get the rest through other methods. If the rest eventually gets released, i'll support it at that time.
If I wait too long, i'll eventually lose interest in ever buying any of it or new series come out and they get a higher rank in my "what i'm buying next" list and that old show keeps getting lower and lower until I eventually forget about it completely. When that happens, nobody wins.

There are very few series i have bought without seeing them first. I have learned the hard way that while 1 season could be really enjoyable, the following season might be terrible. What i usually do is i watch a show, if i really enjoy it like Stellvia or Nanoha i wount hesitate to buy the box set.

i'm actually suffering from this right now. i watched both seasons of school rumble on hulu and i loved the series. i went to amazon to buy the complete box set. while searching, i found out that there was a mini-series that came after (on wikipedia). now i can't decide whether to buy season 1, 2, and OVA or wait for the english release of the mini-series (hoping that it will be sold in one complete box set).

@shaggyglasses - finally, a fellow SIW? sufferer! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm a huge fan of SR (I have both seasons and the OVA) and I saw the "mini-series" you are talking about (School Rumble Sangakki) which is basically a two episode OVA. I really hated it. Now, I did see it as a fansub (it hasn't been released or dubbed in NA yet). Personally, I'd recommend you go ahead and get the SR collection that is out now and not worry about waiting for Sangakki. I was heartbroken by how bad it was.

Well, my "Should I Wait?" Syndrome situations comes in two parts. 1) whether or not if it is worth waiting x amount of years to see the sequel of a series. 2) if I should wait x amount of years and make my conclusion that a new anime series (or an old one that has yet to be released in the U.S.) is worth distributing in North America.
For the first part, I know there are many series that a sequel as a second season (i.e. Shana, Higurashi, Familiar of Zero). Personally, I would rather have you watch the first season so you can the gist of what is going on in the second season. Now, if you really that desperate on knowing what would happen next, then I would suggest getting the manga of the series if there is one. Not only you can compare the manga to the anime, but the manga may help give you an insight on what the "second season" would be like (although there is an 100% guarantee that the anime anad manga versions will be different). But, when it comes to waiting for the second season for like 3-4 years after the initial Japanese release, then you might have a feeling you would want to see the season season released in the United States (and yeah, I did have the same feeling with Higurashi Kai).
For the second part about waiting for a new anime series to be released in North America, I kinda divide that part into two parts. For an older series that hasn't been released in the U.S. yet. I would try to find fansubs to watch online of the said series and make my conclusion whether or not the said series is worth distributing in North America. If there is a new anime series in Japan recently, I would wait about one to two years before I make my own judgment whether or not if the series is worth distributing in the U.S., then watch the fansubs. Case in point, I've watched the entire To Aru Majutsu no Index fansubbed in Veoh and I made my conclusion that the series is worth distributing in the U.S. dubbed due the nice plotline and very minimal controversial content. On the other hand, I didn't have any luck watching Hidamari Sketch online, so I decided to read the manga. All I can say is it is worth distributing in U.S., but not for a potential dub. I would wait about one or two years to make my own judgment on that. A third scenario would be the recent CLAMP series of Kobato. The series is still running in Japan and I find it to be too soon to make my own judgment if the series is worth distributing in the U.S. In this case, I would wait one to two years, watch the fansubs in Youtube/Veoh/Myspace video/etc., then make my own conclusion if the series is worth distributing in North America. Unless of course, if a licensor does manage to pick up Kobato anime series within the one to two year period. In this case, I would go off an try to watch the anime series fansubbed, then try to make my conclusion whether or not it is worth dubbing and should I really wait one to two years for a dub.
Apparently, for me, I'm very impatient for a Hayate the Combat Butler dub. I really don't want to wait another two years to see the series dubbed, but I think it has to do with the business practices with Bandai.
But seriously, if you really want to watch the second season. I would recommend watching the first season now that is already released in the United States and wait for the second season to be distributed in the U.S. It will save you a lot of time if you do that.
