And on top of the problems that Christopher lists... From the clumsily handled merger forward, the series feels so darned rushed. I mean, both the qualifying round and even the Love Live! itself were each crammed into a single episode. And the latter's episode basically wrapped up the Love Live! as though it were just another insert song wrapping up just another episode... It felt perfunctory rather than being a season and series crowning moment.

This review kind of sums up my frustration with this season: why bother making a third season if you’re not going to do anything new with the opportunity?

at least a couple of standout musical moments

Really? The article doesn’t mention any, and honestly there wasn’t a single performance this season that wasn’t just in one ear and out the other for me. A lot of vapid “we’re gonna believe in our future” numbers that wouldn’t be out of place in a Disney Channel “High School Musical” show from 15 years ago. It doesn’t help that when I think back over all three seasons of Superstar, the first and best song I can think of is Margarete’s villain song from the Love Live regionals in season 2.

Sure, they can’t all be “Snow Halation”, but the show really ought to at least manage a “Mijuku Dreamer” every now and again.

Yet many Liella stans claims S3 is the best of the entire francise when it's clearly has its own problem, and the worst of all, they all says Tomari is the best character ever introduced when she's singlehandedly the weakest character that S3 pushed so hard to give her more screentime and development over the rest of the caracters but fails miserably (even the new characters from Nijigasaki S2 has proper development across all the characters) The only thing S3 has redeemed so was the last episode but that's it.

Shame that it ended way too early than expected.

But you KNOW there is going to be a movie.

Every Love Live series so far including Nijigasaki has ended in a movie so there will be a movie at some point.

The question is what...all the Liella girls get invited to Wien for a World School Idol performance ? Kanon goes missing in Wien and they all go to find here ?

I'm taking a pass on the Nijigasaki movies but am defo going to go and see a Super Star movie....or....MOVIES ? Nijigasaki movie appears to be a trilogy Surprised

I feel pretty much the same way. The rival idol group angle was a novel take, but I don’t think a Love Live title simply has the chops to take it to the necessary places in order to make it engaging. You never really got the sense of conflicted or messy emotions. The concept needed a Girls Band Cry or MyGo level of grit or frustration; instead I just spent the entire season waiting for the inevitable to happen, & when it did, I couldn’t really track why this time Margarete finally decided to submit, given the frequent similar opportunities to do so.

That lack of real conflict really hurt the show the further it went on. The school-sustainability issue was solved by the end of season one, while all the potential character issues that had been building up for multiple seasons (Keke’s family issues, Kanon moving) were handled with less drama than shows that would have made them a single episode conflict. Others, like Chisato’s dancing or Sumire’s acting hopes were more or less abandoned until the coda.

Like Chris said, I think my biggest problem with Superstar that made it go from my favourite show in the series to one of the weakest, is that there were simply far too many characters by the end. S1 was something of a revelation to me, highlighting that by focusing on a smaller cast, you could give each character time to breathe and more naturally bounce off one other. Contrast to S3, where the series is attempting to set up odd pairings to show Liella isn’t simply assembled via year cliques, but it never feels genuine because there’s just not enough time to make these friendships and bonds feel earned. And while there were some nice character scenes in isolation, there’s no time to build them up to make them feel impact in the way so many of S1, and even some of S2’s did.

For me, every season became progressively weaker, because the more people were added, the less the individuals were able to do. I felt bad for Ren in particular, because once moment her arc was concluded in S1, it became clear the staff had no idea what to do with her, & she became pretty much a non-entity as a result. The best they could pull out of their asses was a brief jokey gaming addition. Because gap-moe I guess?

Well, while it wasn’t particularly impactful, the finale served as a pleasant enough stopping point to these girls’ journeys.

I recently saw on a UK forum that Anime Limited's blu ray release of S2 looked to be sub-only. So clearly the series wasn't considered popular enough to warrant spending money on continuing the dub. That sucks, but perhaps unsurprising given how niche the franchise is in the west. Outside of the mobile games, it's never been a big seller here, but I guess Superstar under-performed even by those metrics.

Nooooooo. No more movies. It ended and it was serviceable enough as a conclusion.

Let it bow out. If only to finally let Takahiko Kyogoku work on a new series. Or even better, an old one *hint hint, nudge nudge*

The thing is they DID go there before with Lanzhu in the mobile game, she abused her power to ban the original club and forced her club to be the only one, the original girls were actually fighting amongst each other over some of them joining Lanzhu's club, ACTUAL CONFLICT. But then the otakus hated it (and I mean really hated it, death threats to Akina Homoto levels of hate), because it stained the image of the pure idols who never stop smiling or something I guess. And when Lanzhu was actualy animated, they completely defanged her because the writers are cowards.

I wish they had put the now adult members of μ's in the show - not doing anything but individually appearing in the background of various scenes as "Easter eggs". And of course making Honoka Kosaka the owner of the Honoka Café.

Or even something like Honoka Kosaka getting slapped for saying she is quitting μ's.

For some reason, Nijigasaki S2 introduced 3 more characters for totalling of 13 characters in addition of more supporting characters, although the writers managed to pull off an equal development across all characters with a minor side-effect (S2 EP4 felt weak and R3BIRTH's formation was underdeveloped) and all the songs are all memorable to listen to it. It helps that unlike the three other LL series, Nijigasaki has no set goal to begin with. In spite that, Nijigaku S2 becomes my most favorite of the entire seasons.

Ya the mobile game when it introduced Lanzhu was such a breath of fresh air and the reception to it was not. Season 3 of Superstar basically confirmed to me the writers have been put in a corner by fans and despite Margarete being seemingly a obstinate rival she folded easier than origami paper.

Season 3 just ended being such a nothing burger for me with no songs that stuck out. Like despite passively enjoying Season 3 I had to go to Crunchyroll to see if I finished all 12 episodes when I saw this review pop up... which I had Laughing

I've always liked the Love Live franchise and while S3 of Superstar wasn't the best it certainly wasn't a slouch by any means, either.
