I've noticed that recently quite a few Western bands have begun to embrace anime as a source of inspiration for their music, and so decided to start a thread where we can all talk about some of these bands. One of my favorites is Fightstar, an English band that is heavily inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion. How about you all?

Anime references appear frequently in the work of Dan the Automator. The first Handsome Boy Modeling School album makes references to Ghost in the Shell (I think?) and manga in general, while Deltron 3030 is a sci-fi concept album featuring mecha soldiers and robots--really amazing stuff.

There's also this old thread with some more examples.

SaraFilipa mentioned The Birthday Massacre, a Canadian band, on the Anime tattoos? thread. Their videoclip Looking Glass definitely exhibits Japanese influence. No idea about their lyrics.

And no mention of the L33tStr33t Boys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=189QSTKC5no

Shown at such performances as before Video Games Live! and other conventions.

and other gems like Otaku Anthem (I Wanna Live), Haruhi, and Pixel Girl

One can also mention MC Frontalot although that's more nerdcore than anything specifically anime. Closest I can find is Final Boss

If your just talking about artists that are inspired by anime or reference it, then you can't go wrong with Kanye West. The music video for Stronger is a big tribute to Akira. Plus he used samples from and worked with Daft Punk who are well known in the anime world with the anime movie Interstella 5555. Also, Kanye's music video for Good Morning which was animated by Takashi Murakami. And in the song Sky High there is a reference to Lupin the 3rd. And as this article shows he's very much into manga. animenewsnetwork.com/news/2006-04-21/kanye-west-makes-manga

Also, as i mentioned I would put Daft Punk into this same category.

Lol, I used to love Birthday Massacre. The main girl went by the name of Chibi for the longest time on livejournal. I'm pretty sure she was a huge sailor moon fan. Had her hair like Chibi-Usa at one point.

Flaming Lips has an Album called Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The song in which the album is named after is practically an anime girl theme-song. The album art and a lot of their promotional art was all very reminiscent of Nausicaa.

No Doubt had a KITE inspired music video for Ex-Girlfriend.

AFI's Girl's Not Grey video had a creepy, Rei Ayanami looking anime girl with tons of cherry blossoms.

There's also that anime music video Linkin Park did. They're admitted to liking anime.

My Chemical Romance is a group of giant comic geeks and have admitted to pulling inspiration from various comics, American and Japanese. Nothing really obvious in the music though outside of Gerard's random art here and there.

I once read/heard that Daft Punk used to be huge fanboys of anime when they were younger.
But I'm not sure what anime they used to be a big fan of, does anyone happen to know?

(edited part)

Someone helped me by explaining things and linking me some useful website pages.
I figured they admire Leiji Matsumoto's works,
who is the creator of series such as Galaxy Express 999,
and whom they have said to be their childhood hero.
He is the same man who supervised the creation of some of their music videos.
And they are all collected in a full-length animated movie: Interstella 5555.
In their childhood, Daft Punk were especially fans of Star Blazers and Captain Harlock.

And that is the answer to my own question. Wink

I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers are fans, and Kanye West literally sings
"Yes, yes, yes guess who's on third? Lupe still like Lupin the Third" in one of his songs.
The music video of 'Good Morning' by Kanye West is directed by Takashi Murakami.
I would recommend you to youtube it if you haven't seen it before, because it's cute. Smile

To clarify that would be the song "Touch The Sky". It's featuring Lupe Fiasco who is the person who sings the lyrics mentioned above. It's a very good song, and a great video. So I guess that adds Lupe Fiasco to the list of artists.

Oh sorry for that, my mistake. I didn't even know that there was a guest rapper used in that song.
Thanks for clearing that up. Atleast we have another artist added to the list now.

It's probably worth to be mentioned that Britney Spears has an anime-inspired music video
("Break The Ice"), but I doubt she is a fan.

Hmmm, I may be dating myself here, but no one's mentioned Matthew Sweet, specifically his video for "Girlfriend" (released in 1991) which is composed almost entirely of clips from the Space Adventure Cobra movie (although I didn't know that's what it was until years later). He's also used Urusei Yatsura clips for another video (which I've never seen myself) and sports a Lum tattoo.

Aces man, I have not heard that since High School

The other Mathew Sweet one was "I've been waiting" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ0cvtHVXTM

There was also a Portland band I heard at Sakuracon 09
Called the Slants.
Asian influenced -->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPOPLG5GBYM&feature=PlayList&p=78C07AE062C5548F&index=2
