I've been curious about this for a few months, ever since I happened to be listening to one of my Handsome Boy Modeling School CDs and noticed, for the first time, that one of the lines in the lyrics for the song "Magnetizing" goes "So I read a book, I prefer Manga with Mecha."
What other examples are there, in America or Canada or Europe or anywhere else in the world outside Japan, of random anime references in popular music lyrics? The only other example I can think of, off the top of my head, is the infamous "Gotta get in tune with Sailor Moon 'Cause that cartoon has got the boom anime babes That make me think the wrong thing" from Barenaked Ladies' song "One Week." But there must be more.

Quote: | They be like he the man when I'm really a Thundercat
Come on you know the tics connect like Voltron
Collect so much grass popo thinking we mow lawns
My gohans don't match that
But it matches her head wrap and the seats that I got in the lap |
These are lyrics from Nelly's "shake your tailfeather"...I could have sworn they came from one of his other songs, but online lyrics say otherwise -_-
I've only heard anime mentioned in some rap songs aside from that Barenaked Ladies song. I'm sure Outkast as mentioned some -_-

In a Kayna West song called 'Touch The Sky', there was a line that says "Lupe steals like Lupin the 3rd."

I just heard this song on the radio, a rareity since I don't like radio much less rap music. But it had a line that caught my ear because it has an anime reference. The song is called "Freaks Freaks" by Pidgeon John and it contains the lines:
"Check it my name's Pigeon John you know my steezo
Whether in a Regal or shopping in Spegal
Or should I say Spike Spiegel I'm lethal"

This is very interesting I have never noticed these referances. I'll have to check out some songs.

Ooh, I like that reference. I knew there were some more out there.
This song doesn't contain an anime reference, but I think Freezepop's "Tenisu no Boifurendo" is worth mentioning, simply because it's the American equivalent to "Engrish" in Jpop. Its lyrics are mangled Japanese spoken by Liz (Freezepop singer), whose pronunciation is just awful. (I can't link here, but a quick youtube search will get you a hilarious music video for the song.)

Yeah, that's Murphy Lee rapping in "Shake Ya Tailfeather"... When I first heard that song way back when I was just thinking "WTF?" Haha, good song, though a bit old.
