Hi all,
I've tried searching for a thread that is related to this topic, and rather than picking and choosing, I'd thought it would be better if you would all chime in with your thoughts (I realize it's a no brainer question to ask all "hardcore" readers of VIZ favorites, but please be realistic) on the release schedule of our Graphic Novels:
SHONEN JUMP Brand (Yu-Gi-OH!, Naruto etc.)
SHOJO (Ceres/Boys Over Flowers, etc.)
ACTION (InuYasha, Flame of Recca, etc.)
Editor's Choice (Phoenix, Vagabond, etc.)
We've been getting 50/50 feedback on our releases are too fast, or too slow, maybe some may think it's just right.
What do you think?
(Your feedback will be very valuable to our editorial team.)
Thank you in advance!
EisoVIZ

For the most part, I haven't noticed any titles coming out exceptionally fast or slow from Viz. They seem to be coming out about the same rate as any other company's.
Things like Ranma and Eva seem slower than your titles like Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh. Your shoujo titles seem to be coming out just about as fast as, say TP. I personally don't keep up with the editor's choice titles. So, for the most part, I don't see anything you need to "make come out faster."
Of course, everything is relative because we'd all be happy if all graphic novels came out faster.

Yes, they do seem to becoming out at the same rate as any other manga company. The release schedules for Rurouni Kenshin manga is exceptional. A tankoubon a month for a series of 28 tankouban is great. The release schedules for One Piece and Naruto are fine considering you don't want to have a drought of tankouban if you release it any faster.

My only complaint about their speed is Angel Sanctuary. I think they rushed the first volume a little too fast because there were quite a number of spelling errors in it, as well as a mistranslation.

Waiting no more than 3 months between volumes seems just right for me. At first i thought this was way too slow. But now that i'm into 20 or so different series, it feels just right. If they came out any faster, it would be even harder to buy them all right away.
But of course i always wish my favorite series would come out right away

I thought the schedule for Kenshin was more like one every other month. The first 3 were released kinda close together, but after that I think Kenshin's releases are falling into the same schedule as other manga.

Hmm... that's a tough call. While I'd have to agree that most people want their manga now, it does come out at the same rate as most other companies. While I wouldn't mind seeing some of the titles coming out slightly faster... say 6 weeks as opposed to 2 months, I think that's mostly my selfishness, and would likely lead to errors in translations.
My beef is that rather than dealing with frequency is that there seems to be some uncertainly with some of the re-releases. Will we get Ranma or Inuyasha unflipped? (I know it's not relevant to the specific posts, but I'd rather see something take longer and done right than something done quickly and left to errors)

I hadn't really considered the rate at which Viz (or anyone else) releases manga. I just go to the comic store once a month or so, and plonk down money on whichever titles just happen to be there that interest me.. Which means it's rare that I have a full collection of any given manga, in some cases only having like... volumes 2, 4, and 7 of a given series. :p
Anyway, here's a listing of several major titles, and their monthly release dates, and approximately how many months are between each release.
-=- Shonen Jump -=-
Naruto 1: August 2003
Naruto 2: December 2003 (4 months)
Naruto 3: April 2004 (4 months)
Yu-Gi-Oh 1: May 2003
Yu-Gi-Oh 2: September 2003 (4 months)
Yu-Gi-Oh 3: December 2003 (3 months)
Yu-Gi-Oh 4: March 2004 (3 months)
Yu-Gi-Oh 5: June 2004 (3 months)
Rurouni Kenshin 1: October 2003
Rurouni Kenshin 2: November 2003 (1 month)
Rurouni Kenshin 3: January 2004 (2 months)
Rurouni Kenshin 4: April 2004 (3 months)
Rurouni Kenshin 5: June 2004 (3 months)
One Piece 1: June 2003
One Piece 2: October 2003 (4 months)
One Piece 3: March 2004 (5 months)
One Piece 4: July 2004 (4 months)
-=- Action -=-
Ranma 1/2 20: August 2002 (?)
Ranma 1/2 21: March 2003 (7 months)
Ranma 1/2 22: May 2003 (2 months)
Ranma 1/2 23: September 2003 (4 months)
Ranma 1/2 24: October 2003 (1 month)
Ranma 1/2 25: February 2004 (4 months)
Ranma 1/2 26: May 2004 (3 months)
Flame of Recca 3: December 2003
Flame of Recca 4: February 2004 (2 months)
Flame of Recca 5: April 2004 (2 months)
Flame of Recca 6: June 2004 (2 months)
-=- Shoujo -=-
Alice 19th 1: May 2003
Alice 19th 2: November 2003 (6 months)
Alice 19th 3: March 2004 (4 months)
Alice 19th 4: May 2004 (2 months)
Boys Over Flowers 1: August 2003
Boys Over Flowers 2: September 2003 (1 month)
Boys Over Flowers 3: December 2003 (3 months)
Boys Over Flowers 4: February 2004 (2 months)
Boys Over Flowers 5: April 2004 (2 months)
... In other words, most of the releases appear to be fairly stable, at around 3 months per volume.
The only major exception to this is Ranma 1/2, whose release dates speak for themselves, I think.

Actually there are two series I know of with REALLY slow releases that come from Viz. I own both which is how I noticed.
One is Silent Mobius and the other is Steam Detectives ... which also coincidently has the same author. So is there some sort of correlation between the slow releases of these two series involving the author or is it just a pure coincidence.

Don't forget what's considered pretty much the slowest of them all, CLAMP's X. x_X Still... 18 volumes in Japan right now... we're ALMOST there. *hopes for an artbook from Viz soon*

Hmm... looking over Cookie's list and taking the averages, I'd have to say that they are actually slower than the average company. I'd say that a better frequency would be to have releases every other month if at all possible. Every three months is a bit of an irritant, because the wait at that point is a bit long.
From what I've noticed from Tokyopop, the average is about 1 volume every other month, so perhaps it would be more beneficial for Viz to streamline its processes a bit.

Well, no matter how slow Viz is, they will never be slower than Dark Horse. Is it just me or is it taking forever for the next Hellsing volume to come out?

Another title that has come to a standstill is Black Jack. But, now that I think about it, I think it was cancelled, maybe to switch over the the smaller format?

If I remember right the Hellsing Manga has only been out for like 4 - 5 weeks if that. Could be as high as six but thats really not that bad.
Although I guess a person with little patience would think thats to long, especially when its something they really like or really want to see more of.
However Steam Detectives releases AT LEAST maybe 1 mange every 4 - 6 months. And I know the last Silent Mobius manga released 4 months ago.

While most of the titles I buy (3 Shôjo, 3 Shônen, 1 Editor's Choice from VIZ) seem to be very slow, I notice other titles coming out faster. It makes me a little mad, but with release dates so far apart, it makes it better... translation wise, no grammatical errors (I find a few every now and then), and good sound FX translations (If it applies). I'd say that VIZ does a good job, though it's a bits slower than TOKYOPOP. I'd rather wait and get a quality tankôban than get one every other month full of mistakes.
The Shônen Jump! USA tankôban's seem to come out very fast, but sometimes have numerous mistakes (Ex: One Piece Graphic Novel 2). I personally think (Though, I only really buy "Rurôni Kenshin", and when they come out, "Prince of Tennis," "Bleach," and "Hikaru no Go!" from the SJ line) that those release dates need to be a bit farther apart...
